Re: [nfc-l] roll call!

2012-04-03 Thread Andrew Farnsworth
Hi all,
Apologies for a slightly long and on-but-diverging-from-topic addition
to the thread . . .

I am recording with Wildlife Acoustics SM2s in New York, NY this
spring, at my apartment and in conjunction with a joint Fordham - New
York City Audubon project using a small scale radar and acoustics to
monitor movements over the greater metropolitan area. I am also
running a Sennheiser MKH70 connected to a Nagra Ares-BB+ on clear
nights.

Also, hopefully of interest to the community on this listserve, please
visit ebird.org to see the weekly bird migration forecasts co-authored
by Chris Wood, Marshall Iliff, Brian Sullivan, Dave Nicosia and me
(most recent is http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/bcf20120330).
These forecasts and analyses are part of an exciting project called
BIRDCAST, a collaboration among Cornell University, Oregon State
University, and NOAA. For those that remember, this project picks up
where another earlier version left off over a decade ago . . .

Finally, a quick promotional note relevant to acoustic monitoring:
Charles Francis, Phil Taylor and I will be hosting a workshop (see
description below) on 19 August 2012 in Vancouver, Canada. This
workshop follows immediately the North American Ornithological
Conference, so if you plan to attend, please consider remaining in the
vicinity an additional day. If you were not planning to attend the
conference, I strongly urge you to consider it - each of the previous
conferences of this type has been most rewarding and fun.

Enhancing automated analysis of acoustic monitoring data (1/2 day, 19
August 2012)
Digital sound recorders are increasingly being used as a component of
bird-monitoring programs in a variety of ways, ranging from recording
point counts while they are being run by a field observer to provide
backup and validation, to setting out recorders that record
continuously for many hours each day. The main objective of the
workshop will be to bring together researchers with a common interest
in developing algorithms, approaches and standards for analyses of
acoustic monitoring data, for the purpose of developing a strategy to
move forwards in ways that will improve our ability to analyse bird
song data in the future and to integrate these technologies into
operational monitoring programs.

Best to all,
Andrew

Re: [nfc-l] roll call!

2012-04-03 Thread Magnus Robb
I am recording near the westernmost point of continental Europe, Cabo da Roca
in Portugal. My expectations are much lower than in autumn, when birds from a
large part of Europe pass through here. In spring they have much less reason to
do so, but who knows they might surprise me.

I already had one big nocturnal migration surprise this spring - a flock of
migrating Common Scoters over 50km from the coast, when I was at another
location. In southern Europe they are very rarely found inland although in the
north, part of their spring migration route does take them over Finland to
northern Russia.

all the best,

Magnus Robb

I have a recording station on the coast of the Northumberland Strait (Gulf

Fw: [nfc-l] roll call!

2012-04-03 Thread Laura Gooch
I'll be recording in Cleveland Heights, Ohio (east side of Cleveland, about 7
km
from Lake Erie as the warbler flies). I'll be using one of Bill Evans' new
OldBird rigs and another mic that seems to do a little better with thrushes,
but
not as well with sparrow/warblers. I'm planning to start April 15.

I am just starting here in Ann Arbor, Michigan (South East Michigan). I
mean really starting, as it is my first season.

I agree it could be fun to create a map of all the listening stations in
North America!

Re: [nfc-l] roll call!

2012-04-03 Thread Dan Poalillo
David et al.,

I'll be recording in Northern NJ though I am a complete amateur and
don't have an automated recording station--lots of manual exporting in
real time happening at my house. I can't provide calls/hour data,
therefore, but I get a nice sample of some of the species overhead.

Learning a LOT from all of your posts, so thanks!
