Re: FW: [nfc-l] Migration Tonight (9/23-9/24)

2013-09-24 Thread Laura C. Gooch
Last night (9/23-24) was fairly active here on the east side of
Cleveland, too. I had about 550 sparrow/warbler frequency calls. The
night before was even more active, with about 900 calls in the upper
frequencies. I'm not checking thrushes at the moment, because it is too
labor-intensive to pick them out of the traffic noise, but I did notice
/very/ dense thrush calls in the early morning of the 23rd.

FW: [nfc-l] Migration Tonight (9/23-9/24)

2013-09-24 Thread Rob Fergus
I had over 600 calls detected with the Tseep-X and Thrush-X detectors last
night, which means probably close to 1000 calls on the recording if I go
through it manually. Most thrushes were Swainson's and a few Gray-cheeked.
Lots of warbler calls to go through still. At least one Black-billed Cuckoo.
I was listening to the recording live in progress, and heard gulls about
midnight. I've got way more calls to go through than I can easily do tonight
:-)

I recorded last night for only 30 minutes in Calvert County, Maryland, from
0610 to 0640 hrs. I had waves of call notes, sometimes 1 to 2 per second.
I'm a total beginner at this (fascinating!) endeavor and haven't had time yet
to study the file given my limited knowledge base. But I could ID that most
were Swainson's Thrushes and seemed like quite a few Gray-cheeked Thrushes
sometimes in groups ... and I'm working on the others...
Unfortunately because of the wind direction, last night's recording was
polluted with distant bridge road noise. I'm recording off a boat, which
normally gives me excellent conditions: no noise pollution, no trees, and sound
reflecting off the flat water.
Tomorrow night we'll move to a more remote, quieter, location and I have high
hopes for another push of migrants there!

Last night there was a nice push of migrants southward, with the majority being
a good mix of warblers, plus Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Swainson's Thrushes and a
number of Gray-cheeked Thrushes.

The weather forecast looks good for another night of southbound migrants.

If you are in the Eastern portion of the US and Canada, have a listen if you
can.

Good birding!

[nfc-l] Migration Tonight

2013-09-05 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Just another heads-up to listeners/recordists in the Northeastern US about the
migration overnight tonight.

There has been a near constant chatter of migrants over upstate NY at my
recording station in Etna, NY. Lots of Green Herons early on; several
Chestnut-sided Warblers, a few American Redstarts, probably hundreds more of
other warblers, plus a handful of thrushes including a single Swainson's Thrush
which called once from directly overhead.

I expect a very nice descent of thrushes in the morning around 5:50am (EDT).

Good night-listening!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[nfc-l] Migration Tonight: Northeast US

2012-09-09 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
Just a heads-up: tonight (and probably tomorrow night) there is a heavy
migration of birds moving overhead.

Many warblers, some sparrows, and a good movement of Green Herons (at
least, here over Etna, NY).

Hope folks can get out and listen!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Re: [nfc-l] Migration tonight

2009-09-13 Thread David La Puma
While migration has been pretty consistent along the east coast (10
consecutive nights of migration, the longest run I've seen in either spring
or fall over the last six years), two nights ago the low pressure system
that rumbled up the east coast effectively shut down migration over the
mid-Atlantic coast, with southerly winds and heavy precipitation. The effect
of that wind was felt into eastern PA, but diminished quickly thereafter,
leaving western PA under light and variable winds. The effect on the radar
was pretty cool- an apparent boundary between eastern and western PA where
birds were clearly NOT migrating in the east, and were going gangbusters in
the west (see Mike's last image, the one of the regional composite). Since
the low pressure has "left the building" (so to speak), migration has begun
again across the entire eastern flyway. Check out my post from this morning,
which includes a recording snippet made by Mike last night:
http://www.woodcreeper.com/2009/09/13/oops-they-did-it-again/

Thanks for sending the recording, Mike!

Cheers
