So it's a linux rendering issue when taking dumps. That said: we can't do anything about it. Using rules (traditional approach) is pretty bad in screen dumps and even regular rendering, depending on zoom; there one has interaction between the font rendering and other graphic elements (rules). Interesting is that it is straight blob connections that can show these occasional gray pixels and it only seems to happen with a little overlap. Kind of a bug we think. Hans ps. [NTG-context] ConTeXt source from XML
Dear Pablo, Dear Christoph, just in case it might help to your meditation. First of all, lpaths are XPath implemented with Lua in ConTeXt. XPath seems to have as it primary purpose to address the nodes of XML trees. About your sources, the real issue here is to define whether you want TEI or TeX to be the format containing them. I mean, if you add explaining footnotes to your TeX file(s), XML won’t be source anymore. If you don’t want this to happen, you have to encode them in the TEI XML sources. In my case, the connection to the original source will be lost. While we will still try to backport corrections, the connection will be lost at the very moment when we will annotate the source text. From this point of view, an independent source is created here anyway, so I have the freedom to choose between TEI or TeX. At the moment I'm leaning strongly towards TEI, also because I could try to remove the annotations via XSLT once the work is complete, diff the result with the original source and improve it). And besides, XML+ConTeXt looks quite elegant from the distance of my ignorance. (Although reading xml-mkiv.pdf creates a pleasant frictional heat in my cerebral convolutions, but leaves at least as many knots in them as XML data have nodes). One last suggestion about proofreading. This is something I learnt from personal experience. The first reading is much better to catch errors in the text than the subsequent ones. Having the text properly formatted and printed on paper helps a lot to spot errors. Same here: It's the paper! (I for myself prefer for the first proof reading a page lots of white space, in monospaced font like Courier, while my proofreader wants to see the font that will be used in the end.) Thank you very much for your suggestions, Christoph ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / https://mailman.ntg.nl/mailman3/lists/ntg-context.ntg.nl webpage : https://www.pragma-ade.nl / https://context.aanhet.net (mirror) archive : https://github.com/contextgarden/context wiki : https://wiki.contextgarden.net ___

Hi Hraban, That works perfectly. I didn't know about that command before, and my google searches to find something like that didn't turn anything up. Undoubtedly I used the wrong search terms. I tried putting the \placefigure and the itemize in a box, thinking that if all else failed I could put a negative \vskip at the bottom to make the box shorter. [NTG-context] setuphead in connection with the command argument
Hi, I'm trying to adapt the format of chapters in my document and have a few questions regarding setuphead. My aim is to have the chapter (title) on a separate page with an additional intro in different text sizes for title, subtitle and the intro. I chose to use the "command=" argument in setuphead for that. However, I'm not quite sure about it's internals. Let's begin with a minimal example: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } \setuphead[title, chapter][command=\MyChapter] \setupbodyfont[11pt] \starttext \startchapter[title=foo][subtitle=bar, intro={some explanation}] some text \stopchapter \stoptext ``` This produces 1.pdf. ## Font size What is the reason that that the font of the chapter is bigger? How can I reset it to normal size? This does not work at all: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \setupbodyfont[11pt] #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` However, changing to a bigger font works somehow. Is there a factor applied to the font size internally? For example: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \setupbodyfont[20pt] #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` produces 2.pdf (the chapter font is not 20pt). ## Line breaks How can I achieve line breaks? This does not work: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% #1 #2:\\ \structureuservariable{subtitle}\\ (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` (see 3.pdf) I also want to set everything except of the intro in a flushright environment but do not know how. I tried: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \startalignment[flushright] #1 #2:\\ \structureuservariable{subtitle}\\ \stopalignment \structureuservariable{intro} } ``` (see 4.pdf, no change) ## Bold text I tried to get the text bold. However, `#1` and `#2` does not seem to follow this. ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \bold #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` ## Makeups The best solution, I had so far, was to define a makeup, but I don't get it to work with text with mixed alignment and it does not solve the font size problem: ``` \definemakeup[chapter][align=left, top=] \define[2]\MyChapter{% \startmakeup[chapter] #1 #2:\\ \structureuservariable{subtitle}\\ \stopmakeup (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` (see 5.pdf) ## Framed I also have tried this but it does not bring any linebreaks: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \framed[frame=off, offset=0pt]{#1\\#2:\\ \structureuservariable{subtitle}\\ (\structureuservariable{intro})} } ``` (see 6.pdf) I hope you can shed some light into setuphead with command. I search on the wiki, Stackoverflow and the manuals but didn't really find anything. Hard to say without looking at the bib file, but % is not a comment character in bibtex. So, if your file starts with % @article{key, % title = {...}, % } you will get an error from the bib parser. If you want to comment out an entry, the simplest way is to remove the @. So, article{key, title={...}, } is a comment (since it is outside the entry). See the following sample: \definefontfamily[libertin][rm][Libertinus Serif] \definefontfamily[libertin][ss][Libertinus Sans] \definefontfamily[libertin][tt][Libertinus Mono] \definefontfamily[cormora][rm][Cormorant] \setupbodyfont[cormora] \starttext \input zapf\par \switchtobodyfont[libertin] \doloopoverlist{\rm,\ss,\tt} {\recursestring\input zapf\par} \stoptext You may define font families (which are actually typeface families). [NTG-context] update
Hi, This weekends update: - we're currently checking the upcoming math manual and in the process we streamline some mechanisms - as part of the BT presentation about par passes we introduced \toddlerpenalty but we leave it to the user to guess what that is (it fits into widow, club and orphan penalty collection) - we could already produce pdf 2.0 but especially when one mises with older files, some care is needed; the inclusion 'compact' mechanism has been cleaned up a bit and the merge interface is converging (it has to do with efficient font sharing, cleanup and fixing of files outside our control); when one has issues with inclusion, try with compact= (set to nothing) - although we're mostly done with tagging it will get some attention as we go; it's mostly about playing safe and getting valid pdf's - for rhaban (posters) another fancy feature was added: \startTEXpage[offset=1ts] \samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\space \startshadow[contrastcolor=red,weight=100]\blue\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\stopshadow\space \samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\space \startshadow[contrastcolor=red,weight=100,dx=0,dy=0]\blue\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\stopshadow\space \samplefile{tufte} \blank \setupshadows[shadowed][unit=pt,dx=.5,dy=-.5,weight=200] \shadowed{\bfd Tufte\setstrut\strut} \stopTEXpage Hans - Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | www.pragma-ade.nl | www.pragma-pod.nl - ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / https://mailman.ntg.nl/mailman3/lists/ntg-context.ntg.nl webpage : https://www.pragma-ade.nl / https://context.aanhet.net (mirror) archive : https://github.com/contextgarden/context wiki : https://wiki.contextgarden.net ___
[NTG-context] Re: Why is only the first frame protruding into the margin?
thanks Wolfgang for your advice and sorry for being so verbose, but since the margins are "included" in the problem I decided to put my layout there too. I made your suggested changes and unfortunately it doesnt work, but being a bit surprised by the margins I printed a copy of the page and still worse... It semms that the first frame is good aligned to the specified margin, and it is the rest of the text that gets more than 5mm extra space at the right margin and about 2 mm less in the left margin. I think the printer is a bit involved too, but since in the pdf we can see this protruding I think there must be something strange to get this outcome. The papers are for my fellows, so it is not critical if it stays so, but since I'm trying to learn a bit more to use context, it annoys me that I don't get to understand some problems... thanks again for taking time ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / https://mailman.ntg.nl/mailman3/lists/ntg-context.ntg.nl webpage : https://www.pragma-ade.nl / https://context.aanhet.net (mirror) archive : https://github.com/contextgarden/context wiki : https://wiki.contextgarden.net ___

It's my poor consideration. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / https://mailman.ntg.nl/mailman3/lists/ntg-context.ntg.nl webpage : https://www.pragma-ade.nl / https://context.aanhet.net (mirror) archive : https://github.com/contextgarden/context wiki : https://wiki.contextgarden.net ___

Looking at two synctex files, it would seem that the state=repeat version creates a synctex file that has syntax matching the "original" synctex format. And you are right, the file is bigger. In any case, now that I know what is going on, I have convinced auctex to play nicely with the new way of doing things, and so all is now good. Question for anyone who made it down this far: Is there a mailing list or other way that a ConTeXt user can find out about non-backward-compatible changes like this? I wasted a fair amount of time tracking this problem down (*), and if there is some other mailing list I should be subscribed to, I'd love to know about it. (*) Unfortunately, this change to ConTeXt happened around the same time I upgraded emacs from 27.2 to 29.3, and when things didn't work I upgraded auctex from 13.

The --synctex=repeat option outputs a synctex file that works with auctex' epdfinfo program, so (at least when using PDFview) forward and backward search now work with emacs+auctex, at least when you (a) put (setq ConTeXt-texexec-option-nonstop "") in your ConTeXt mode hook (or some other sensible place), and (b) edit the ConTeXt-expand-options defun in auctex' context.el (or redefine the function in some hook) to replace --synctex=1 with --synctex=repeat I have submitted a bug report to auctex about (b) and another item, but I have no idea if/when the fixes will make it into a new release of auctex. [NTG-context] Re: Wiki - test/proposal to further clarify documentation
Hi Garulfo, I’m not against the “new order”, but I’d keep the colorful subject tiles. Different accesses are good IMO (as long as it doesn’t get to convoluted). I’d say updating, sorting, restructuring pages is more important than a new start page. Yes, please sort out reference vs. tutorials! Often examples make sense in the reference pages, so the distinction is a bit fuzzy, but there are enough where a subject/tutorial page would make more sense than examples spread over several single command pages. We could also define if the “main” reference page (with examples) is \definestuff, \setupstuff, or \stuff – IMO \setupstuff makes the most sense, since usually the others inherit from it. Often enough, parameters aren’t explained in the reference pages; sometimes you can find examples using them, but there are too many holes. I tried to fix that where I could, but too often I don’t understand enough of the sources to make sense of some setting. For wiki contributors, it might make sense to combine the markup pages – in many pages e.g. is used where would make more sense; often \starttext … \stoptext is not necessary and just blows up examples; markup is generally somewhat chaotic (e.g. , , or ``?). [NTG-context] regular online meet-up
You’re invited to our regular online meet-up, this upcoming Wednesday, April 10th, 19:00 CEST (UTC+2) at https://lecture.senfcall.de/hen-rbr-rku-oke (same, but shorter: https://u.mtxrun.eu/ctxmtg) ConTeXt users of all levels are welcome! Do you have a subject that you’d like to talk about? Looking forward to seeing you, Hraban (Same blurb as always:) [Howto] * No special software installation required; most modern browsers should work (WebRTC required). * Open the URL above, accept the privacy statement, * enter your name, * click "join" (or "start" if you’re the first), * click "with microphone", allow your browser to access it, check the audio. * Your microphone is muted if you join. Activate microphone and/or camera with the buttons at the bottom. * Minimize the default presentation with the "screen" button, bottom right. * If you’d like to share your screen or upload a file, you can make yourself the presenter: Click on your user name, change the setting, then you’ll see the "screen sharing" button beside the camera button; also there’s now "manage presentations" behind the "plus" button. Beware there is only one presenter at a time, so don’t kill someone else’s presentation. [Technical hints] * Sound is usually better if you use a headset (less noise for everyone). * Connection problems are mostly due to low bandwidth or high latency on your side, e.g. with mobile connections. * Sometimes leaving and re-entering helps. * If audio/video doesn’t work for you, you can still use the text chat. * Screen sharing needs a lot of bandwidth. * BigBlueButton documentation applies: https://bigbluebutton.org/teachers/tutorials/ [Netiquette] * Please use a name that we recognize from here. Some feel uncomfortable with anonymous lurkers. * Mute your microphone while you’re not talking. * It’s nice to show your face at least when you join. * If there are connection problems, stop camera sharing. * The room is set to “everyone’s a moderator“, I trust you... ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / https://mailman.ntg.nl/mailman3/lists/ntg-context.ntg.nl webpage : https://www.pragma-ade.nl / https://context.aanhet.net (mirror) archive : https://github.com/contextgarden/context wiki : https://wiki.contextgarden.net ___
[NTG-context] PDF/UA-2, WTPDF
Quoting a post by Philipp Kiff, https://mastodon.social/@pkiff/11221949350928: In amongst the release of PDF/UA-2 (PDF for Universal Accessibility) and the new Well-Tagged PDF (WTPDF) standard last month, some PDF professionals may have missed two other new resources that may help explain and view them: 1. Questions and Answers about Tagged PDF from PDF association 2. Acrobat Custom File Info Panels by Peter Wyatt Last month saw the release of PDF/UA-2 and the new Well-Tagged PDF (WTPDF) standard - neither of which revokes PDF/UA-1. And none of those are the same as PDF 1.7 vs 2.0. To many, the landscape of PDF specs may now seem littered with confusing acronyms and versions! For some help disentangling it all, the PDF association has a Questions and Answers about Tagged PDF: https://pdfa.org/resource/tagged-pdf-q-a/ In related news, Peter Wyatt released Acrobat Custom File Info Panels. This is a free extension for Acrobat that adds new panels to the XMP metadata shown when you view File > Properties in Acrobat Pro. The new panels allow you to view the additional conformance claims and dated revisions of ISO standards that can now be included in PDFs, but that aren't currently visible in the standard Acrobat panels. https://pdfa.org/discovering-pdf-metadata/ One thing I realized in reading through the new standards and looking at various sample files this week is that I should probably spend some time learning LaTeX! Both LaTeX and LibreOffice are already capable of producing PDF/UA-2 files, and with some tweaking, LaTeX can produce what appear to be really good WTPDF files. Kudos to both those development teams! https://github.com/latex3/tagging-project/discussions/72 Finally, in case you missed earlier posts from last month, here are links to the official sources for the two new PDF standards that these other resources relate to: 1. PDF/UA-2 https://pdfa.org/iso-14289-2-pdfua-2/ 2. [NTG-context] Re: last page number for a list
Hi, Bruce— This does not quite work—the page numbers are those of the first page of the chapter, not the last. But thanks for the tip about \writetolist. Perhaps I can get that to work. What I need are ToC entries like AuthorName ShortTitle 1–6 I need this pagination because one of the requirements of continuous publication on the OJS is that once an item is published changes are not permitted. So I cannot go with normal continuous publication since, for us anyway, items are not processed in strict sequential order (e,g., we may have, paper+paper+ review+paper...) If it helps: I currently have \startFMTitle[reference=\Reference, title={}][itemAuthor=AuthorName, itemTitle=ShortTitle,...] \setuplist[FMTitle][state=start, alternative=startendfmpages, criterium=all,] (\Reference is defined at the in the preamble to input of the file/component.) \definelistalternative[startendfmpages][renderingsetup=list:startendfmpages] \startsetups[list:startendfmpages] \structurelistuservariable{itemAuthor}\crlf \structurelistuservariable{itemTitle}\hfill% \at[\currentlistentrypagenumber]–\at[\lastpagenumber] \vglue1pc \stopsetups where I have \reference[\lastpagenumber]{} at the end of the file. But this gives me ??–viii (the viii is correct and interactive) for the FMTitle. Sadly the entries for all my other Titles (SourceTitle, StudyTitle...) is ??–viii. (Each title is a modified chapter.) Curiously, \at[\Reference]–\convertnumber{r}{\lastpagenumber} and \at[\Reference]–\at[\lastpagenumber] work properly in the body text. The overall structure is project-product sort with many components in the product. This is probably TMI. The bottom line is that I am truly stumped.
