Re: [NTG-context] new beta

2005-04-15 Thread Thomas A . Schmitz
Sorry to be a pest, but am I the only one seeing these problems? Has
everyone else installed the latest beta without problems? I thought
that I may have made a silly mistake installing, so I installed again
using Gerben's method, but I get the same error. For all purposes, this
beta does seem to be broken?

[NTG-context] justification

2005-04-15 Thread Jörg Hagmann
Dear list members,
After months of trying to figure out what TeX, ConTeXt etc is and how
to install everything needed I finally produced my first document. I
was thrilled when I saw real pdf pages with footnotes and all!

However, I noticed the following problem (no doubt the first of many to
come): justification on the right is far from perfect - there are lines
sticking out. After going through the manual, I decided that
\setuptolerance[horizontal,verystrict] in the setup area should do
the trick, but it didn't. Any suggestions? (I set up ConTeXt on two
Macs, once with teTeX and once with TeXLive, and on a Mac running
Mandrakelinux and teTeX - the result was the same (same lines sticking
out) on all of them).

I am currently writing a textbook and I am looking forward to using
ConTeXt.

Hi Thomas,
After reading your message, I just wanted to experiment, and so
installed the new beta with Gerben's i-Installer (on Max OS X 10.3.8)
and first I got an error message due to the fact that I had a
context-en.fmt made with xetex (in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/xetex/cont-en.fmt
but I renamed it).
Then after making a texhash, ran again context and ended up with an
error, which is not exactly as yours:
	No pages of output.
Transcript written on cont-en.log.' instead of a filename.
Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-en.fmt'; will try `context.fmt'.
	kpathsea: Running mktexfmt context.fmt
fmtutil: no info for format `context'.
	I can't find the format file `context.fmt'!

Since I don't have time to understand what is wrong right now, I am
going back to the previous version of context...

Peter,
thanks for the hint. The very latest version even has 2005-04-15 09:05.
Still no go - same errors. For the time being, I reverted to the
previous beta as well.

Otared:
right, I got this error too and simply removed the xetex-format (never
used it anyway). I even could make ConTeXt work by recreating the
format. Unfortunately, it screwed up all of the fonts that I had
installed - something about the map-file. Well. that's what a beta is

FYI, I am thinking in several bi-lingual books: one novel, one book of

one cookbook, and possible an engineering book. But all depends on
whether the layout is easy to make.
i played with dual streams a bit yesterday but have no time to explore it now;
it's a tricky business and much depends on what the input / output is to be

it is doable to develop a framework for this, but only when you and others first
come up with some decent spec (what kind of input, what kind of sync, what kind
of content, how to handle floats, etc)

2005-04-15 Thread Jörg Hagmann
Since the attachment showing one pdf-page doesn't seem to pass through,
let me describe the outcome:
On 6 pages with mostly default settings, there are 3 lines sticking out
on the right side by 2- 3 characters (igt, mt and ng). In
addition, there are about 3 smaller defects (ca. 1 character
protrusions). I am using il1, and de as mainlanguage.
Interestingly, on 2 pages the defects occur at exactly the same
distance from the upper edge.

Thanks David,
modifying texexec.rme and saving it as texexec.ini solved some of the

1. output of texexec --version unchanged:

2. Nevertheless, texexec now processes my files. However, my log is
filled with hundreds of lines like this:
Warning: pdfetex (file
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/map/pdftex/cont
ext/pdftex.map): fontmap entry for `txbttsc' already exists, duplicates

3. Context now NEEDS the line
loadmapfile foo.map
in every document. Before, this was an option. I typically used updmap
to keep my config files in sync (because I want to use my fonts with
LaTeX from time to time), so I didn't use this feature much. Now,
however, context doesn't seem to read the normal config files any more.

Not sure if this is the expected behavior or a bug.
Thanks!

somehow reads a mapfile that ConTeXt provides and then complains about

Guata obat!
This is nice, another swiss user! (sorry gang for this bit of patriotism)
In fact if you use \setuptolerance[verystrict] will cause TeX to use as
few glue as possible, so the possibilities to stretch a line to have a
better breakpoint is lowered. Instead you might use
\setuptolerance[tolerant, stretch] or even
\setuptolerance[verytolerant,stretch]

after a \quotation no line break is possible. For what reason?
Is this a bug or a feature? (I'd consider this as a bug).

Me too. Workaround: \quotation{...}\hbox{}
\def\rightboundarycharacter#1#2%
  {\prewordbreak %\nobreak
   \hskip\hspaceamount\currentlanguage{#2}%
   \languageparameter#1}

Oh, one more thing: interestingly, updating ConTeXt makes pdflatex
break, too - in fact, every flavor of TeX that use pdfetex. pdfetex

missing font. So I have to use the prior beta.
delete the pdftex, map file in the fonts/map/pdftex/context path
(i fixed the beta zip)

[NTG-context] paul tremblay's pages

2005-04-15 Thread Ciro Soto
I wonder what happened with the nice pages in

http://www.geocities.com/paulhtremblay/context_xml/page2.html

they are gone now... and no re-direction exists.

Sorry about that. The geocities location was just a temporary
location. This location below is permanent and will remain permanent
and because it is a sourceforge site there is a very good chance it
will always be there. (sourceforge won't revoke my privileges like a
university would if I wasn't a student, or like yahoo might if I
wasn't a member anymore; sourceforge is very good about keeping things
there forever.)

Again, my apologies.

The new site is:

http://getfo.sourceforge.net/context_xml/index.html
