The final remapping is done in 8r-base.map, as far as I can see
(in dvi mode the font 'phvr8t' is used).

If you actually have the Adobe binary font files, I suggest copying
Hans' 8r-base to a different directory such that it will be found
before the distributed one, and change the 'u' pfb names to 'p' pfb
names in the copy.

If you do _not_ have the Adobe binary fonts, then I am afraid you
have to learn to live with the URW versions. These days, a
non-embedded Helvetica seems to imply the use of Adobe Sans MM,
and I've had a production PDF rejected by a printing house because
of that.

 updmap --edit gives:

   LW35 ADOBEkb
   pdftexDownloadBase14 false

updmap is irrelevant, ConTeXt comes with its own map files.

Cheers, Taco

I would second what Taco says: not embedding is just asking for trouble
from third parties. However, if you're independent or otherwise control
everybody's viewer, try this:

\usetypescript[adobekb][8r]
\loadmapfile[8r-base-ndl]
\usetypescript[postscript][8r]% 'pos' is deprecated
\setupbodyfont[postscript,ss,11pt]
\starttext

\stoptext

updmap is irrelevant, ConTeXt comes with its own map files.

And here's one that ConTeXt can use (after Berend gives a thorough test
and some feedback).

[Incidentally, there is one NimbusRoman that gets embedded: that's the
slanted version, which seems unavoidable.]

Re: [NTG-context] How to \bf for math?

2006-02-18 Thread Taco Hoekwater

Hans Hagen wrote:

(concerning the definemathcharacters, we need input from taco on that
because he knows what goes on deep inside tex and has done complex
math typesetting for ages)

The \definemathcharacter macro is a actually quite simple, it is
mostly a syntactic wrapper around \mathcode and \delcode assignments.
See the attached chunk of --module documentation text.

Whether mixed bold/unbold math is feasible depends mostly on two things:
* if bold symbolic fonts are available (math italic, symbol and
  extension)
* how you define the variable symbols (latin characters) and
  font switches.

Normally, an 'a' is of mathtype 'variable' (7), so that if you do
${\bf a}$, you get a bold (fam 6) one instead of the one from the
math italic (fam 1).
When you redefine its mathcode so it becomes an `ord' (0) in a
`bold math italic' family (say 'A' or so. You cannot use \bi since
that is a match for \it, and it will not have the same spacing
rules!); afterward it no longer obey font switches.

If you want to get back to the upright version in such a setup,
you have to redefine te \rm command to change the math family code
yet again, to 'ord' in upright math (fam 0), this time.

All this shuffling about with mathcodes is needed because during a
single formula, TeX stores tokens in the form (family id, chararacter).
Only at the very end of the formula are the families themselves
mapped to fonts (and the tokens converted to using those fonts),
so changing the \textfont0 etc. assignments while in the formula
does not help.

I hope this is clear enough.

Cheers, Taco

[NTG-context] interaction between boldmath and text-mode

Hello,
strange interaction between \boldmath and \textmu:

%% To get upshaped \textmu:

%% Defining boldmath:
\definetypeface[boldmath][mm][boldmath][modern]

%% To get bold everywhere:
\def\myBF{\boldmath\rm\bf}

\starttext
{\myBF bla $bla$ \textmu} % \textmu is slanted here
Workaround: {{\myBF bla $bla$} \bf\textmu}

No a big problem, since there is a workaround, but strange for me...

[NTG-context] framedtext white above

2006-02-18 Thread Hans van der Meer
In framedtext I see some whitespace just below the topframe and the
first row of text.
At the bottom this is not the case, the textbottom and framebottom
are close together.
Here is a minimal example, the whitespace is just above the first row
of b's

How can I get rid of the white on the top?

\starttext
\startframedtext[depthcorrection=off,offset=0pt,strut=no]%
bbb\crlf
bbb
\stopframedtext
\stoptext

depthcorrection does the trick for the bottom.
I see no further changes when I add linecorrection=off too (not
sure what it does).

yours sincerely,

That is to say, could you please give a more detailed report?
It works here: The attached new mapfile (in my original post) lived in a
ConTeXt-accessible path (in this case, just the testfile's directory),
and contained entries directly cut-and-paste from my pdftex_ndl14.map.

%D The current way of triggering the 'pos' combination:
\usetypescript[postscript][8r]% 'pos' is deprecated
\setupbodyfont[postscript,ss,11pt]

%D Since this triggers the slanted variant, there will be *one*
%D NimbusRoman font embedded. The rest is left up to the viewer:
\showbodyfont
