[NTG-context] hyphenating bug

2008-04-13 Thread Yue Wang
Hi Taco and Hans

I was typesetting the manual of a software developed by me using
ConTeXt while the problem occurred. I try to minimized the problem
and the result is attached.

luatex.pdf --- pdf produced by luatex 0.25.2

It seems luatex forgets to hyphenating capital words.
I am not sure whether it is a bug of LuaTeX or ConTeXt.
the output of pdftex 1.40.3 seems fine using the same output file
described below.

It was a bug in luatex. The fix is in the repository already,
and there will be a 0.25.3 sometime next week.

This depends on how exactly you have input that line (which
in turn nicely demonstrates why you should post minimal examples,
instead of out-of-context questions).

I tried:

   % engine=luatex
   \starttext
   \directlua0 {tex.print('$\\sqrt{2}=1.4142135623731$')}
   \ctxlua{tex.print('$\\sqrt{2}=1.4142135623731$')}
   \startluacode
   tex.print('$\\sqrt{2}=1.4142135623731$')
   \stopluacode
   \stoptext

And all three work as they should. So what did you input, exactly, that
gave wrong results?

 Hello,

 This does no more work with MKIV:

I can tell you the cause of the problem:

context mkiv loads the font from the AFM files in unicode mode,
but the typescript defines TFM fonts in texnansi only. This
results in mayhem (I am not sure what exactly goes wrong, but
that does not really matter).

If you want existing tfms to have precedence over any afms
(thereby loosing unicode support for legacy fonts) you can add
this to cont-sys or the top of your input:

   \ctxlua{fonts.define.method=2}

Otherwise, you will have to extend type-urwgaramand.tex in some
way that I do not quite grasp.

 Hi gang,

 speaking of xml... I have two easy questions, but can't find an
 answer. It's about tweaking the pdf-output I get:

 1. How do you add an additional hyphenation to a word? How would I
 enter the equivalent of super\-duper in an xml-file? I tried
 superaddhyphen;duper with this definition:
 \defineXMLentity[addhyphen]{\-}

 in my environment, but this doesn't seem to work.

Needs an example file, because

   \defineXMLentity[addhyphen]{\-}
   \starttext
   \hsize 1in
   \startXMLdata
   I tried superaddhyphen;duper
   \stopXMLdata
   \stoptext

works in both mkii and mkiv.

 2. Similar question: how to prevent an unwanted ligature, esp. in
 German? In TeX, I write Kauf{}laden. What would be a good way to do
 this in xml? I was thinking of Kaufnolig;laden and
 \defineXMLentity[nolig]{\kern0pt}

That should work, but probably better is:
   \defineXMLentity[nolig]{\prewordbreak\kern0pt\postwordbreak}
because the \kern will disable hyphenation, otherwise.

In mkii, just
   \defineXMLentity[nolig]{{}}
also works (but not in mkiv, and that is a feature).

That's not OK. You should get 0.25.2. Besides, the proper version is

 no format, so beginfig, draw etc are unknown

 I thought 'plain.mem' is the default. But I see, there exists only
 'metafun.mem'.

If you want to do the low-level thing, you have to read the
luatex manual carefully. MPlib is just like standalone metapost
in that it wants to load a mem file in non-ini mode, and that
file has to be generated before being used. Here is what you
wanted to do, using just the library core (I did cheat just a
little bit though, I added dump; at the end of my plain.mp):

% start low-level
\startlua
local function finder(name, mode, ftype)
 if mode==w then
 return name
 else
 return kpse.find_file(name,ftype)
 end
end
mp = mplib.new ( {
 hash_size = 10,
 main_memory = 200,
 param_size = 10,
 find_file = finder,
 ini_version = true
} )
if mp then
 res = mp:execute('plain')
 mp:finish()
end

mp = mplib.new ( {
 hash_size = 10,
 main_memory = 200,
 param_size = 10,
 find_file = finder,
} )

if mp then
 res = mp:execute(\\beginfig(1) draw (0,0) .. (1,1) .. (2,1);
endfig; bye; )
 tex.print([ .. tostring(res.status) .. ])
 mp:finish()
end
\stoplua
% stop low-level

If you just want to run plain metapost images inside of
a context document (instead of metafun), it is much easier
to use Hans' high-level API (once again, you need dump;
at the end of plain.mp):

\startlua
metapost.process(
   metapost.format(plain),
   beginfig(0); draw (0,0) .. (1,1) .. (2,1); endfig;)
\stoplua

This makes sure that all memory values are the same,
that the mem file is cached inbetween runs, removes the
need for \\ and bye; etc.

Best wishes,
Taco

 The environment.luafilechunk is defined in luat-env.lua, that should
 have been loaded at this point ( a bit earlier in luat-env.tex ).

 I think either

/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context/base/luat-env.tex

 is not the one from the latest context distribution, or an extra
 luatools --generate command is needed.

 You can check the \contextversion by looking at

/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context/base/context.tex

 around line 45, it should say

   \edef\contextversion{2008.04.11 14:48}

 There can be some more esoteric causes, but these are the two most
 likely ones.

in previou sversions the env was loaded runtime (this behaviour
originated in the stepwise development of embedding bytecodes in the
format, in the beginning all chunks were loaded at runtime); i managed
to get rid of that; in addition to taco's suggestions ... so it could be
that old code and new code is mixed.

 this is because \\ can mean anything, for instance it may expand to

 May be I do not understand this right, but I thought that '\' is luas

it depends on where you code lives ... in a lua file, then \\ is an

your mail only shows the one line of code so we have to guess

 there is a \luaescapestring primitive which catches things like

 Can you make a little example of usage?

 tex.print(\detokenize{$\sqrt{2}=} .. math.sqrt(2) .. $)

well, if you put that in your document, you'l get a typeset tex.sprint,

 Could not find the definition of \detokenize.

 Isn't mplib a dll under windows?
 It is possible to build the unix version as a .so because support
 for that comes from autofoo automatically, but that is not yet
 officially supported: debugging dynamic libraries is harder than
 debugging static code.

 On the other side, it is very easy to replace a dll by a new version,
 if the interface stays stable.

sure, but it also introduced unneeded mails on support lists of users
who mix up things; we'd probably end up with the same situation as kpse
... mplib234.dll and so, which does not improve things either

 If there is more than one program, which is using mplib, you have to
 update all theses programs, if you make some mplib changes.

indeed, but contrary to tex livem where all binaries are updated in
sync, for moving targets like luatex we want to be sure that things
match; disk space is cheap, and telling user to download 'this' and
'that' and put 'such' and 'so' in locations 'here' and 'there' is more
trouble than let them just download one binary etc

 But I think that a dll could very much boost the metapost usage. It
 would than be very easy to write third party software.

maybe, but that is independent of being used in luatex and mpost itself;
as taco mentioned, there it will be staticaly linked, just as lua and
its libs

 see streams startting at

Luigi, Bert, you both completely miss that the OP already tried to
use streams (see subject!) and can't achieve what he needs, i.e.
streams in columns.
That's simply not possible to get automatically (i.e. without
manual breaking) with today's ConTeXt.

[NTG-context] small caps and old numbers with open type fonts

2008-04-13 Thread Antoine Junod
Hello list,

I'm still playing with a few otf fonts and enjoying the way ConTeXt
works :)

I'm now playing with a beautiful Garamond. I try to typeset a few
things with old-style numbers and, well, the output contains old-style
numbers but not in my Garamond (it seems to be in latin modern). What
should I do to use the old-style numbers of my font? Did a miss a doc
about that? Or did I missunderstood the \os command (I thought it was
a switch to the old-style of the font but it seems rather to change of
font)?

I actually use my font as simple as possible with a
\definefont[boum][MyFont at 12pt]. Is it the problem?

It the same with the \sc command.

Thanks a lot for your reply,

Yes. You should set up your fonts with a typescript and access small
caps / oldstyle as features.

Sorry, can't help you further at the moment, but there were a lot of

[NTG-context] luatools --ini plain

2008-04-13 Thread Hans van der Meer
This is something I don't understand.

In the mk.pdf manual on luatex on page 21 there is the following
example:

luatools --ini plain

Instead of the expected output 120,808 plain.fmt etc. I get an error:
There is no lua initialization file found. ...
Running luatools --generate does not help.
There is a hint: This file can be forced by the --progname directve,
or specified with --luaname,...

How can I get a lua initialization file in order to not have the
error.
And how do I interpret the hint, as the text of the error message is
too cryptic for me to understand.

[NTG-context] Unfill with anglebetween

2008-04-13 Thread David Arnold
All,

I was trying to help a student today and the following came up.

drawarrow anglebetween(path1, path2, btex $\theta$ etex)

Is there some way to typeset the theta with an unfilled background?

David.
