You could use umlauts in macro names only with XeTeX and LuaTeX

strange...

sure, you are right: no umlaut in macro names.
only, I didn't consider it as a macro name, for it is written in the

but as using pdfTeX can be totally avoided in near future it's all
right with me.

By the way, the Mathematica fonts can be downloaded from (type1 and ttf)

LuaTeX just compiles and replaces these fonts by lm.

luatools putr8a.pfb gives the resulting location of the pfb file so it

If metapost could provide 3D figures, that will be great. But I don't think

[NTG-context] Anyone wants [another] I love ConTeXt T-shirt?

Dear ConTeXt fans,

I'm goint to buy another bunch of T-shirts tomorrow and we will
reprint them with I love ConTeXt, in another (hopefully better)
printing technique*.

If anyone wants [another] T-shirt (or long sleeves) in whatever color
that's available in the shop (dark works best), please let me know the
size(s) and color(s). [Two tiny photo samples attached.] I'll send
them out once in November for 6 EUR + shippment costs (or I can bring
them to some conference, like DANTE meeting in Vienna or BachoTeX or
...).

Hopefully I'll have the DVDs with videos ready by then as well, so
that I will be able to send DVDs to anyone interested in the same
package.

Thanks to everyone,
 Mojca

-
* When we were printing T-shirts for the ConTeXt conference, the
printshop has promissed screenprinting and due to
most-people-were-on-holidays did digital transfers without elastane,
so they will reprint us T-shirts on their costs (we still need to buy
T-shirts though). I'm sorry for the bad quality, but exchanging them
all would be somehow impractical. To sum up: if anyone wants a better
quality or simply another T-shirt in any color, let me know ASAP.

Re: [NTG-context] Problem with text floating around tikz picture

2008-09-29 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Hello,

I'm forwarding the author's answer back to the mailing list. If anyone
has some nice idea about possible solutions, let us/him know ...
I don't remember how I was solving such problems so far, but I know
that I have always been missing:

% maybe even some external file with extremely long code
\starttikzpicture{picture name}
...
\stoptikzpicture

\placefigure{some figure}{\usetikzpicture{picture name}}

If that was implemented, maybe \usetikzpicture could be inside an hbox?

 Hi!

the problem is caused by the fact that a tikz/pgf picture is a \hbox, but
with \leavevmode before it. This turned out to be necessary to ensure that
tikzpictures behave the same way for all backend drivers.

Certainly the added \hbox is a correct solution to this problem since it
gets tex back into the right mode...

I don't really know how to change this in an elegant manner since existing
code will now assume that tikzpictures are always set in horizontal mode, so
any change could have desastrous consequences for existing documents.

 Sorry,

The tikzpicture apparently extends to the whole text width, resulting in

OpenType and TrueType fonts don't need tfm files, but for math you

Hello Otared,

tlmgr update --all

should now fix symlinks (apart from the fact that if I want to update,
every fifth package fails to update on average, so I need to restart
updating every few minutes). Theoretically that command followed by
rsync-drived updates should work OK now.

I took another look. By now I mean that in less than 30 hours
tlmgr update --list
should return you bin-context version = 10774.

At the moment of writing this it's still
bin-context: local: 9789, source: 10592

If already the first command starts complaining about non-existent
texlive.tlpsrc as it did here, I had to do something else:
tlmgr option location http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/texlive/tlnet/2008

--

Norbert has another script almost ready to put TeX Live packages with
ConTeXt betas latest luatex binaries on the garden, but I have some
other urgent things to do in the following days. After that I'll try
to finish the script ASAP.

After those scripts are ready, something like
tlmgr -location http://texlive.contextgarden.net/current update --all
should do all the required steps (though it will be far less efficient
than rsync which only downloads the changes, not the entire package).
TL team argued that updates will not be that frequent anyway, and that
people have broadband connections anyway (true in most cases).

Everything seems to work well (I am able to run lua code, use otf font

I wanted to recompile the binaries right away, but svn up on the

[NTG-context] passing buffer to lua functions

2008-09-29 Thread Olivier
Dear all,

I'm trying to implement a very simple filter mechanism in lua like this:

\def\test#1{%
  \startlua
local pipe, str
pipe = io.popen(./my_filter '\luaescapestring{#1}', r)
str = pipe:read(*a)
tex.print(str)
pipe:close()
  \stoplua
}

\test{%
  line 1
  line 2
}

The issue I have is that the argument of test has its line breaks
removed in the process (i.e. the filter my_filter sees a single line
argument). How to prevent this while keeping the lua escape at the same
time? (I know I can implement such a thing with executecommand and using
buffers written to files, but I would like to avoid writing on the hard disk.)

Olivier: What system do you use? I am using MacOSX and in july this
year I mailed about the error below:

Sounds familiar? If you are also working on MacOSX(10.5.x) then I
should expect the problem to be platform specific. I had some
discussions with Taco Hoekwater about this problem, but we never
solved it and I have no inkling of its cause. Since I am not well
enough acquainted with the code behind mplib and friends, I had to
fall back on using MKII and putting MKIV aside.
But I guess the solution to this problem is pressing, since we cannot
have one platform falling out on ConTeXt.

Certainly the added \hbox is a correct solution to this problem since it
gets tex back into the right mode...

I don't really know how to change this in an elegant manner since existing
code will now assume that tikzpictures are always set in horizontal mode, so
any change could have desastrous consequences for existing documents.

maybe you can use (in the context variant)

   \ifinsidefloat

(sometimes putting \dontleavehmode in front also helps)

Thank you Wolfgang, but this does not work for me with latest

mkii.) I put your lines in a file and add
\setupbodyfont[utopia][ec/8r/...] %tried several and also without

 \starttext
 test
 \stoptext

LuaTeX just compiles and replaces these fonts by lm.

luatools putr8a.pfb gives the resulting location of the pfb file
 so it
 actually finds the font.

 Do I misuse it?

Try my test file (I saved the typescript above in type-utopia.tex).

 \usetypescriptfile[type-utopia]

 \usetypescript[utopia]
 \setupbodyfont[utopia]

 \starttext

 \tf ABC abc 123 \par
 \it ABC abc 123 \par
 \bf ABC abc 123 \par
 \bi ABC abc 123 \par

 \stoptext

 Wolfgang

Mojca did send me a list with the necessary files for fourier+utopia.
 I put them in

 http://www.math.chalmers.se/~mickep/fourierandutopia.zip

if someone wants to test. I also attach a small (I guess noncomplete)
typescript file type-myfourier.tex (the myfourier not to clash with
something previously defined) and a file ftest.tex which indeed gives
the fourier fonts, but with the error as in
 http://www.math.chalmers.se/~mickep/ftest.pdf mentioned in a previous
 mail.

I guess this is not the correct way to write typescripts for these
fonts in mkiv, but I dont know how to :(

PS: Thank you Mojca for giving this list of files and also explain
which of the otf/ttf/type1 files that needs typescripts.

Math fonts are not available in 'ec' encoding, you have to use 'default'

2008-09-29 Thread Peter Münster
On Thu, Sep 25 2008, Olivier Guéry wrote:

 * There should't be space between two sign. Test 2

Hello Olivier,

IMHO, frenchpunctuation should just care about the additional spaces
before some punctuation signs, that are the French typographic mainstream.
Neither more, nor less. Two or three signs like !!! are anyway rare
exceptions and perhaps grammatically even not allowed. For such exceptions
one can use for example \string!, if no space is wanted.

I would like to see the rules as simple as this:
- before :, ;, ?, ! and » add some tiny nobreakspace (for example
half an inter-word space and stretchable)
- if the author has already added a space (or nbsp) character before such
sign, gobble it and use the tiny nbsp
- same thing after «

 * The space before the footnote sign is too big (it's clearer with
 othe fonts). Test 4

For me, no special treatment should be triggered with frenchpunctuation
or \language[fr]. Footnote signs are just a matter of taste and style.

 \mainlanguage [fr] \language[fr]
 \setcharacterspacing [frenchpunctuation]

Perhaps, it would make sense, to make one test file for \mainlanguage[fr]
and another another one for \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] ?

1 The « ; » signs shouldn’t be at the beginning of a line, there must be
space before all sign (look at the rules here :
 http://wiki.contextgarden.net/frenchpunctuation) :\crlf

To test, that the space is not breakable, one can use:
\start
\hsize1pt
bla: bla : bla : bla~:
bla? bla ? bla ? bla~?
bla! bla ! bla ! bla~!
bla; bla ; bla ; bla~;
«bla» « bla » « bla » «~bla~»\par
\stop

Hi Taco,

I did kpsewhich mp-tool.mp and it came up with /usr/local/texlive/
2007/texmf-context/metapost/context/base/mp-tool.mp. That file has in
my system creation+modification date 01-04-08 02:14 and was last
opened 03-07-08 so this must be it. Came straight from unpacking the
context distribution zip. This should have been cont-tmf.zip created
05-08-08 17:13.

The other mp-tool.mp in my system is /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-
dist/metapost/context/base/mp-tool.mp. I also checked this one and
found it has creation+modification date 06-02-08 12:52 and was last
opened 06-02-08 12:52. So this one was apparently never used by me
after installing texlive2007.

I think this proves the file in my case is indeed the 01-04-08 02:14
one.
