Re: [NTG-context] showcase on mac?

2008-10-03 Thread Willi Egger
Hi,

This is strange. I use also the 8.1.2 version of Acrobat Reader on a
MAC with OS 10.4. I have precisely the same problems als Frans
mentioned. - I now realize that I encountered this already a longer
time ago, but due to the fact that I download manuals directly from
the tree, I forgot this.

Kind regards

 I deleted the Reader and downloaded/installed Reader 9.0.0 from the
 Adobe website. This time no error message but also no action when I

 Still, it must be something on my machine, since others don't have
 this problem.

It simply means that a format generation didn't work. If you get a bunch

hi,

- the current beta has some speedups and mem improvements for fonts

- for huge fonts (like chinese) general mem consumption can be made
smaller (at the cost of some runtime) by

   \ctxlua{garbagecollector.enabled=true}

although this is not that neccessary when you used the upcoming beta

You need to say a bit more about your circumstances and goals. 90% of TeX
should work well (excepting experimental bits like luatex, xetex, and ConTeXt
MKiV which may need some tweaks) on all current platforms, but if you are
constrained by site policy to use binary packages provided by your
distribution,
that is an entirely different problem from whether you can use TeX
Live from CTAN.

If you rely heavily on .dvi and want a viewer (e.g., kpdf) that is
integrated with your
desktop, then your options are more limited, but you should think
about switching to
a PDF workflow (because it is well supported outside the TeX
community, there are
more and better tools for PDF than for DVI).

 could put
 his own personal directory in it, and there did not need to be an ls-R
 file.

TeX Live 2008 has TEXMFHOME set to $HOME/texmf in the default
configuration file (configured so ls-R is not needed).

 Well, no offense, I used to be a big fan of SuSE myself (still like it
 a lot, but their package manager really needs work). But: I just
 double-checked, and TEXINPUTS is still set on my 11.0 system - even
 though I don't have any SuSE-provided TeX-system installed. That's
 really unpardonable. I can understand why they want to set it for
 their own TeXLive packages, but not on a virgin system without any TeX
 component. For an inexperienced user who wants to install TeXLive from
 DVD or via the net installer, this will be a major obstacle. So I
 think the point remains valid: SuSE is not a TeX-friendly distribution.

Having TEXINPUTS set when TeX is not installed is not nice, but it is
really a trivial issue. Someone who uses SuSE should post a note
explaining how to remove TEXINPUTS (hopefully in a way that will
survive updates) and file a bug report with SuSE. Distributions are
can only be as TeX friendly as their users -- otherwise you get
what is needed to build program documents and no more.

Sure. But miktex has two sorts of .ini-files:
1. Wrapper files for commands for the generation of formats (they
contain things like \input cont-en.tex \dump). This .ini-files you find
below texmf\tex\.

2. Containers for memory and path settings comparable to texmf.cnf. This
are stored in texmf\miktex\config.

If you move .ini-files of the second sort to a place where e.g. pdftex
looks for .ini-file of the first sort you can get very bewildering error
messages. And as it is easy to confuse the files one should always check
their content.

[NTG-context] hz MkIV

Now, how do I assign different degrees of hz to different areas?
Say, moderate hz in the normal text and more drastic in controlled

% main text:
\setupbodyfont[postscript,10pt]
\setupalign[block,hanging,hz]

% and in controlled situation:
\setupwhatever[align=hzXXL,style=...]

This doesn't work:

fonts.expansions.classes['NormalQuality'] = {
 stretch = 1, shrink = 1, step = .5, vector = 'default', factor = 1
}

fonts.expansions.classes['DrasticQuality'] = {
 stretch = 2, shrink = 2, step = .5, vector = 'default', factor = 1
}

\definefontfeature[hz][default]
[protrusion=pure,expansion=sstquality,mode=node,script=latn]
\definefontfeature[hzXXL][default]
[protrusion=pure,expansion=sstquality,mode=node,script=latn]

\usetypescript[postscript]
\definetypeface[postscript][rm][serif][times][default][features=hz]%

but compiling it I get some trouble

texexec --pdf works as expected
texexec --lua drops colors (COPYRIGHT is black)
texexec --xtx gives no output (linux and FreeBSD)

All normal?

But that doesn't work in mkii then unless some other hacks are added.
(I know, mkii and mkiv are not compatible, but there are no obvious
limitations why they could not work in the same way.)

 (no colorization of pictures with text in mkiv)

(In the particular case of gnuplot, I have no idea how to deal with
that situation without a bunch of extra work since it's not so simple
to convert some color from metapost variable into one that ConTeXt
accepts in \color[...]. I have \chardef\TeXtextcolormode\zerocount in
mkii, but I still consider it ugly.)

In the case of XeTeX: no, it's not normal. If you add
\loadmapfile[lm-ec.map] this solves the problem, but if I was on your
place, I would use \sometxt{COPYRIGHT} instead of btex COPYRIGHT etex.

Loading map files has been removed from XeTeX a while ago. Maybe lm-ec
should be added back for such cases? (I remember some problems with
btex etex in past after map files have been removed, but I don't
remember solving anything at that time.)

 Maybe someone should ask the authors of listings.sty if they're are

 I've done that in the old days of MKII: there was too much work because of
 quite a lot of LaTeX commands and the motivation was not big enough.

 Now we have MKIV, that gives us a lot more possibilities and the approaches
 are completely different from those in listings.sty.

And there is also the vim module. Not quite as effective as built-in
highlighting support, but it gives you access to a wide range of
programming languages almost for free.
