[NTG-context] sorted data in mkiv

2009-05-21 Thread Johan Sandblom
I am writing a booklet for use by junior doctors at the hospital where
I work. It will contain random bits of data that is available from
various online sources such as phone numbers, dosages of exotic drugs,
referral routes and assorted things better written down than
remembered. Much of it is in tabular form, and I have so far used
natural tables. It is intended to be extremely compact so I make many
adjustments to save space, such as using multiple columns where
appropriate.

Some of the things listed would benefit from being sorted such as
phone numbers, but I would still like it to be presented in a table
(with the added complication that the table will have two columns of
names}. Using pseudocode I would like it to work like this:

\phone{person c}{54321, 12345}
\phone{clinic a}{12345, 54321}
\phone{clinic c}{54321, 12345}
\phone{person b}{12345}
\phone{clinic b}{12345}
\phone{person a}{12345}

This should automatically be converted to

\bTABLE
\bTR\bTD person a\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\bTD clinic a\eTD\bTD 12345, 54321\eTD\eTR
\bTR\bTD person b\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\bTD clinic b\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\eTR
\bTR\bTD person c\eTD\bTD 54321, 12345\eTD\bTD clinic c\eTD\bTD 54321,
12345\eTD\eTR
\eTABLE

presumably using something like

1. name and number added to a register
2. register is sorted on first field
3. t = total number of entries in register
4. l = number of lines in table, calculated as l=t\2 + t mod 2
3. create a table with l lines where each line has
  \bTR\bTD name(i) \eTD\bTD phone(i)\eTD\bTD name(i+l)\eTD\bTD phone(i+l)\eTR

It would not surprise me if this is implemented somewhere in ConTeXt
but I have been unable to find it. I would be very happy to see a
solution using lua, but I lack the knowledge to implement it myself.

Regards, Johan

This test file has been given by Wolfgang Schuster a few days ago. It
shows a problem that is especially annoying after periods because it
disrupts frenchspacing/nonfrenchspacing. For me, very high priority
because the quality of the output is severely reduced (with this bug,
it would be impossible to typeset a book for publication with ConTeXt
mkiv right now).

[NTG-context] French typography is back

2009-05-21 Thread Robert-André Mauchin

Hi again,

I have been reading all threads about the French typography in this
mailing list, however the current solution is alas far for perfect. The
command \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] was a good idea, but it
only deals with spacing. French typography rules not only tells us that
there should be a narrow, or a normal space before some punctuation
marks like :, ;, , !, ?, « or », but also that theses spaces must be non
breakable otherwise line breaking could occur just before a punctuation
mark (and this is very bad).

Take a look at the following example:
\section{Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée?}

With the current frenchpunctuation command, we got:
Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée
?

We should obtain:
Production locale indigène ou production romaine
importée ?

Of course we could achieve this manually by adding the correct NNBSP
like this:

\section{Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée\,?}
But I believe the whole point of TeX is to let the engine make all the
typographic stuff.

The best would be to get rid off \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]
and adapt the frenchb Babel module from Daniel Flipo (source and
explanation here http://daniel.flipo.free.fr/frenchb/ ), as a module
(t-french modification), or when loading the language, but I really
don't know how hard it would be since it handles a lot more than just
punctuation marks.

Regards,

Bob.

Yes, I should unlearn amsmath syntax at some stage.

\unexpanded\def\mathscript{\setmathalphabet{script}}
\unexpanded\def\mathfraktur   {\setmathalphabet{fraktur}}
\unexpanded\def\mathblackboard{\setmathalphabet{blackboard}}

we can make these into

\unexpanded\def\mathfraktur   #1{{\setmathalphabet{fraktur}#1}}
\unexpanded\def\mathblackboard#1{{\setmathalphabet{blackboard}#1}}

\unexpanded\def\mathsr{\setmathalphabet{script}}
\unexpanded\def\mathfr{\setmathalphabet{fraktur}}

does that make sense?

Actually, better will be if we go for full ams compatibility:

Leave \mathscript, \mathfraktur, and \mathblackboard as they are, and
define

\unexpanded\def\mathcal #1{{\setmathalphabet{script}#1}}
\unexpanded\def\mathfrak#1{{\setmathalphabet{fraktur}#1}}

But I think, \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] should stay. The

hm, i gave it another try ... also in next beta ... is bit tricky as
this is a feature that does not fall in some script/lang category (i'd
put it in default (which works) but we need more

in node mode they are implemented by faking real features (a mechanism
that was somewhat extended recently to support anum and pnum for arabic
and persian numbering)

no, active chars for such things are no solution and will not be
supported in mkiv; setcharacterspacing is the way to go (and if it
breaks that should be fixed instead); language support shoul dbe in the
kernel anyway

Hi again,

I have been reading all threads about the French typography in this

command \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] was a good idea, but it
only deals with spacing.

\section{Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée?}

\setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]

\hsize .1mm a? aa? aaa? ?

seems ok here so what version are you using?

[NTG-context] Condensed font variant setup

2009-05-21 Thread Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Hello,

I have the following setup for the Minion Pro font:

\starttypescript [serif] [MinionPro]
\definefontsynonym [Serif][MinionPro-Regular.otf][features=default]
\definefontsynonym [SerifBold][MinionPro-Bold.otf][features=default]
\definefontsynonym [SerifItalic][MinionPro-It.otf][features=default]
\definefontsynonym [SerifBoldItalic][MinionPro-BoldIt.otf][features=default]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript [MinionPro]
\definetypeface [MinionPro][rm][serif][MinionPro][default]
\stoptypescript

I ocassionally want to use Minon Pro Condensed, too. How can I
incorporate it in the typescript above? Or is it better to create
separate MinionProCn typescript and use them both?

Best,
Vyatcheslav

Not tested but shouldn't be the following two lines (type-spa.lua -
line 131/132) be written in the reverse order (penalty before skip).

insert_node_after(head,start,make_glue_node(tex.scale(quad,right)))
insert_node_after(head,start,make_penalty_node(1))

Ok, I've made test, I stand corrected, it does add a nnbsp, but does not
remove the space (if there is) before the punctuation mark. That's why I
end up with a ? at the beginning of a new line.

Thanks for the tip.

Re: [NTG-context] loading figure in LuaTeX

2009-05-21 Thread polytope

Thank you for help.

It worked if I use the absolute path in LuaTeX, but it is not working
in ConTeXt and XeConTeXt.
On the otherhand, the relative path is working in ConTeXt and
XeConTeXt but in LuaTeX.

I'll do more tests.
Is it normal?

Anyway, I got the result.

Thank you again.

Best regards,
