Feature is described in ConTeXt an excursion, page 64 (paper version)!

[NTG-context] buffer broken?

2012-01-11 Thread Hans van der Meer
Something must have been changed with buffers between the versions:
ConTeXt ver: 2011.11.29 18:47 MKIV fmt: 2011.12.31
and
ConTeXt ver: 2012.01.09 10:08 MKIV fmt: 2012.1.11

Formerly this was ok:
\startbuffer[abc]
whatever
\stopbuffer

Now I get: ! Missing } inserted.

Because running this in isolation goes without a problem, I suspect the change
has to do with the project structure in which I use the buffer. But again, it
worked in the past.

[NTG-context] Problem with doublesided

2012-01-11 Thread Tomas Hala
Hello,

because of problems with a double-sided document,
I compared ConTeXt behaviour in TeXlive2010, TeXlive2011
and beta-version at contextgarden.net.

I found out, unfortunately, that the following code works differently:
only on TeXlive2010 version I received the proper design,
i.e. even page has mark on the left, odd one on the right,
while the TeXlive2011 and the beta produce single-sided layout,
i.e. marks are on the right side in all pages.

Or is there any special option in the current version?

Thanks for a help,

Tomas Hala

\setuplayout[location=doublesided,marking=on]

It works with these macros, yes. Thanks.

But is \setbuffer..\endbuffer something new? I do not see it on the Reference

Can you give somewhat more information, for examle what is the difference

Yes, these 'definers' were never party of the official interface and
they are now all \install*method commands that take the same number of
arguments but without []. I might (re)introduce \define variants at some
point (probably with key/values then). This is just to make low level
configuration more consistent. After all, some of these definers expect
knowledge of internals.

Since there is no question about this in the list, I wonder it happens in my
system only.
Would you please test the above?

The versions of LuaTeX and of ConTeXt are as following:

This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.70.1-2011051908 (rev 4277)
ConTeXt ver: 2011.12.23 09:52 MKIV fmt: 2011.12.31

Thank you.

It's a matter of font still not defined at that point: just pickup a body

\setupbodyfont[lmroman]
\showframe
\starttext
\input knuth\par
\stoptext

I made showframe work before \starttext but in general Luigi's advice
has to be followed: if you do anything with fonts before \starttext then
you need to load a bodyfont.

indeed, and it's a bonus that ~ == nobreakspace (although I can imagine

we're moving away from active characters and characters with special
meanings so the reversal makes sense in mkiv

in fact, your definitions should have been some combination of skip and
penalty as you cannot assume that ~ always has the same meaning (being
activ emeans that its meaning can change)

if you use that kind of low level hacks you should not harm your
workflow by updating

all low level macros get renamed into their own namespace and are not
supposed to be touched (unless of course one keeps also track of low
level changes)

better is to extend the core code with options

Thanks. I couldn't find out myself.
I examined the wiki's referencepage before asking, but \setuppagenumbering and
\setuppagenumber didn't mention this.

highlight NobreakSpace ctermbg=yellow

Because running this in isolation goes without a problem, I suspect the

again, it worked in the past.
 Does it works with
 \setbuffer[abc]
 whatever
 \endbuffer
 ?

It works with these macros, yes. Thanks.

 But is \setbuffer..\endbuffer something new?

No, it’s a old command but not very useful for a user.

I do not see it on the Reference page of the wiki.

The original source for the reference pages didn’t provide a way to describe
the syntax for \setbuffer but there are also many commands which are
undocumented.

Also it doesn't seem in line with ConTeXt's regular naming scheme of
 \startsomething..\stopsomething.
Can you give somewhat more information, for examle what is the difference
 between \setbuffer and \startbuffer?

\setbuffer can’t be nested like \startbuffer and not a command which should be
used in a document. It’s useful for internal use when one write macros where
the regular buffer environment can’t be used.

[NTG-context] placefigure shifting up?

2012-01-11 Thread Meer, H. van der
In my document I have a number of \placefigures, some pdf's, some jpg's etc.
Mostly the figure are placed correct with respect to, the caption but sometimes
for no apparent reason I can spot, the picture is shifted up. In the first
illustration taken from the document this is clearly seen, picture and caption
should be close together. Compare this with the other one.

I do not have a minimal example at hand, the document is too big for that and
as said, I could not yet force the behaviour. Both \placefigure's are exactly
the same apart from their specific contents.

Anyone who knows about this problem? For me it is quite a problem, because it
ruins the document layout considerably.

I might add to this report the following observation:

In a document with \setuppapersize [S8][S8] the shifts appear now and then,
whereas these are typeset normally when the document is place on

It seems that the papersize and placefigure sometimes have a problem with each

You don’t need it and you shouldn’t put it in your document. The problem is
the setting \setupalign[line] which breaks \externalfigure but when the
conditional
\raggedonelinestate is false (can be also achieved when you set a value for

Re: [NTG-context] placefigure shifting up?

2012-01-11 Thread Meer, H. van der
I think I can nail the responsible one.

As far as I can see the problem is tightly coupled with the following structure:

\placefigure[][]{caption}{\startcombination[]{contents}{}{contents}{}\stopcombination}
The other figures I have seem to placed well enough, the above structures
behaving erratic. I could not completely ascertain whether empty desciptions
parts in the combination-members plays a role.

I really hope this will point the way to a fast solution from the gurus ;-)

[NTG-context] Error Line Number

2012-01-11 Thread Kip Warner
Hey folks,

I get the following error message when attempting to compile my book,
but it doesn't appear to say what file / line number is responsible. Is
there a way to turn on file / line error messages, akin to what one sees
with gcc?

$ context Source/Handbook.tex --result=Handbook.pdf --purgeresult

Dear Marco,

Thank you for your reply.
It is totally my fault.
I should be more careful to edit.

Best regards,

Dalyoung
