You have to specify a font for monospaced text and it’s better to set
also a font for math.

It would be nicer if the unset styles (in particular math) would fall back

[NTG-context] Box flowed and hanging into the margin

2014-03-28 Thread Markus Finke
I need a textbox with an opening and closing picture as border. This box
should be flowed around by maintext and hanging into the outer margin
(for reasons of space and design).

It seems to be a simple task but I have no advance since days. Any idea?

Re: [NTG-context] lower superscripts in MkIV -- too low?

2014-03-28 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
we have a more modern implementation in the next beta

I tested the following with various flavors:

$
 x\mathstrut_{3} x_{3}
 x^3 x\mathstrut^3
 x^\circ x\mathstrut^\circ
 20\mathstrut^\circ 20^\circ
$

Flavors that I tried:

2014.03.27 MkIV
2014.02.14 MkIV
2013.06.07 MkII (from latest beta)
pdfTeX 1.40.14 (from Debian TL 2013)

(wrapping in \(start|stop)text or ending with \bye, as appropriate).

My observations:

The MkII and pdftex subscripts look too high. I know that's
sacreligious, since it is what Knuth must have intended, and I am
surprised that I didn't notice it before.

The 2014.02.14 MkIV subscript with the strut looks too low, although the
x^3 with the strut looks reasonable, or is maybe just slightly too high.
The x^\circ looks fine. The x\mathstrut^\circ is too high. But the
20\mathstrut^\circ looks right (and looks too low without the strut).

In 2014.03.27 MkIV, the subscript- and subscript heights are unchanged
by the strut. The subscript heights look right. The superscript
heights all look okay, except for the 20\mathstrut^\circ, which is too
low (same height as without the strut). In earlier versions, one could
raise the \circ using a \mathstrut, but that no longer has an effect.

The other change, and maybe I am hallucinating this one, is that the
horizontal spacing between the x and the 3 is now slightly different
with and without the strut: It is tighter with the strut. I think it
looks better without the strut, but am not sure.

So, overall I think it has improved. I also wonder:

1. about the right horizontal spacing (how tight it should be)

2. how to raise the \circ in 20^\circ

But this make *bigger* periods for the ellipsis, and when I try

I have never tried the xml mechanism, so I am not sure whether the filter

then the filter module should work. If not, it might be possible to create
something like

[NTG-context] Linenumbering and bidi

2014-03-28 Thread Rik Kabel
I have requirements similar to those of Stéphane Goujet to reproduce the
typography of earlier times, and I tried to adapt the code presented in
his note earlier today titled “Quotation blocs with repetition symbol in
the left column.”

The result of this attempt is the discovery of two issues with
linenumbering. I will present these in separate notes. This note
involves an unfortunate interaction with bidi. The other problem
involves startnarrower.

Both issues occur with the current 20140328 beta.

Adding the line \setupdirections[bidi=on,method=two] to Stéphane’s
example results in the disappearance of the guillemots that would
otherwise be placed as linenumbers. In my case, this bidi variant is
needed to prevent misplaced references. The issue of misplaced
references was discusssed in a recent thread by Pablo Rodriguez (Re:
[NTG-context] (again) bug with bidi direction and \about references,
begun on 3 March).

The bidi issue does not occur with TL2013, although perhaps method=two
is meaningless there. Other bidi options do not show this problem.

Both issues occur with the current 20140328 beta.

Placing one of the examples in Stéphane's message into a startnarrower
environment results in a shift of the linenumbered section to the left
margin. As an example, replace his final section with the following:

   \setupnarrower[left=2cm,right=2cm]
   \startnarrower[left,right]
   Now, a quote block starting just there, {\bf in the middle of a line}
({\bf space after colon is too big}):\startbloccitel\input tufte

   \input tufte
\stopbloccitel . This a bit of text at the end of the quotation. It
   {\bf seems fine}.

   And let's call a {\bf footnote}\footnote{\startbloccitel\input tufte

   \input tufte
\stopbloccitel}. Unfortunately {\bf no quote repetition symbol will
   appear in it}.
   \stopnarrower
