I shoud probably have been more specific: While \startregister as such works 
for me, it 
1) isn't collapsed as expected together with ordinary single 
register-entries (my main problem, cf mwe below)
2) is a bit cumbersome to use as it requires the user to keep track of 
keys, as explained in your link from contextgarden.

[NTG-context] compressing register ranges

Using [compress=all] for registers yields somewhat puzzling results (1.0.4 (TeX 
Live 2017)).
I would expect the register of the following code to become one single range 
"1--7", though context produces "1--2, 3--7".
Is this the expected behaviour?
And if so: is there another switch to get the ranges to be collapsed completely?

Also: There wouldn't be a shorthand to define explicit ranges? LaTeX has 
\index{Demorange|(} to \index{Demorange|)} which is actually very convenient.

yes I did, unfortunately it doesn't work

Nested emph to invert works. But my text has both italicised and regular 
headers -- both should be printed upright with the modified style.

Even though I can modify them manually in this present case, something like 
\upshape would be good to have.

[NTG-context] (re)defining command with options

While visualising index-entires in the margin using \version[temporary] isn't 
implemented for MkIV yet, I'd like to define a basic stand-in in the meantime:

\setupmargindata[inmargin][location=outer, style=itxx]
\define[1]\myindex{\index{#1}%
\inmargin{#1}%
}

But occurrences of e.g.

\myindex[CONTEXT]{\ConTeXt}

break these simple definitions.

Is there an easy way to define commands with options and/or patching 
(extending) existing commands?

Even with {zm, zc} or any of the predefined methods I don’t really think it is 
working completely as expected, even though the problem might just occur in 
very special cases:

Thank you very much for your example -- it really helps a lot!

That’s one smart trick for the endnotes. It will do fine for my current 
project, but obviously it will not work for footnotes directly on the pages.
I had somehow hoped that there would be something like „if within some 
environment/command" to the processors. With this also the formating of the 
items within the captions could be done automatically.

A real problem though is that adding
\setupregister [index] [compress=yes]
will wrongly compress e.g. "aaa 1, 2, 1n“ to "aaa 1–1n“. I’ll need to use 
compressed ranges and would be happy with a result, where formatted numbers a 
subsumed under the regular ones.
You don’t happen to know how to make this work correctly, do you?

on the standalone (last word in the margin) to TL16 (properly hyphenated)

Can this be fixed?

2016.05.17 19:20 MKIV). This has obviously been fixed since, as it works in the 
standalone.

For other reasons I’d prefer to keep working with the TL16-version -- is it 
possible to patch the hyphenation easily in TL 16?

spacing are like in German. Looks like that setting right/lefthyphenmin 
explicitely will work.

\offset[y=2mm] *inside* \placeongrid will do this.

By trial-and-error I’ve come up with the following. It seems like a hack but 
both variants are close enough to my requirements that I would be able to work 
with one of them.

There’s still one catch: When I change the caption key „location“ to „bottom“ 
together with „inbetween={\blank[-\strutdepth]}“ the picture is aligned with 
the black line (top of the first text line). 
This would actually be the preferred solution also for „{left,high}“. Yet I 
couldn’t find a possibility to shift the picture vertically by some millimeters.
Is there?

line of the caption (location={left, high}) on the grid and have it align with 
the figure at same height.

I hoped this to be solvable by some simple instructions that I just haven’t 
been able to figure out. But Henri Menke suggested in a comment that the 
mechanism might not be implemented.
Is this really the case?
And if so: is there any way to achieve the alignment anyway?

I’d greatly appreciate any help as this is an important requirement for my 
present project!

Back in 2007 there was a discussion here on the list about whether context 
could do something like LaTeX’s float pages.

In short these are designated pages that LeTeX puts in to collect abundant top- 
and here-floats. There can -- in contrast to contex’s default=page -- be more 
than one float on such a page and there is no running text.

In a LaTeX-setup correcponding to:

Is there a possibility to have context remove body text from pages with floats 
when the space falls short of a certain number of lines?

Hans mentioned nlines in the old thread, but commenting it in doesn’t seem to 
have any effect.

Just never occurred to me that it might not be defined, as it is in babel and 
all other babel-languages I tried seemed to be there.
Could it be an idea to put all available ones on the list on

[NTG-context] \language[is] not working

The Icelandic hyphenation and language settings, though present in the 
installation (lang-is.lua), don’t seem to work on ConTeXt  ver: 2016.05.17 
19:20 MKIV current  fmt: 2017.3.21
I’ve tried both \language[is] / \language[icelandic] and \mainlanguage[is] but 
the result is identical to English. Other languages (fr, ru, de) work as 
expected.
