Best, Alan Seems like Idris forgot to include the readme, incase it hasn't been attached check out the 1 November 2007 rev from http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Image:Npp_ConTeXt.zip your sure to find it there. Put everything in ConTeXt.zip in the same folder you extracted mswincontext.zip (182 mb) then run NPP.bat. Make sure you adjust acrobat.lnk appriopriately as the path is hard-coded. And what OS are you using? MohamedInstructions for Setting up ConTeXt with Notepad++ November 1 2007 ConTeXt Support Package for Notepad++. This package is for Notepad 4.5, released October 25 2007. The file config.xml in particular may not work with other versions, especially if you start it with the batch file. If you already have Npp, please update to 4.5. Lots of small improvements. One nice feature is that from any text selection (such as a control sequence) you may do a ConTeXt Wiki search from the RUN menu or ALT-F3. In addition there is Google and Wikipedia search. Also, I have included the wonderful Explorer plugin. This package is offered as is, with no promise of support. Instructions: 1. From the installer, you MAY not want to use the default destination folder, 'Notepad++'. texexec and company choke on directory names with characters like '+' in them. So you could change it to, eg, 'Notepadpp'. So if you plan on linking the ConTeXt utilities with the notepad installation directory somehow then you may want to change its name. However, in the following I assume that the directory name remains 'Notepad++' 2. You may also want to check the installation option, Don't use %APPDATA%. Then all your configuration settings will be save in the installation directory. This is because, even if you rename the installation directory, the name of the local user application directory will still be 'Notepad++'. However, in what follows I assume that all configuration files are saved in \username\Application Data\Notepad++. 3. You may want to install a few plugins. The installer will give you a list of plugins you can select. Go to the following links for details: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/plugins-HOWTO.php The Explorer and NppExec plugins are among my favorites, and I have configured them for ConTeXt. In the following I assume that you have also installed the Explorer and NppExec plugins. The Explorer plugin is not included in the installer so I have included it in this package. 4. Notepad++ should already be in your path. If not, add C:\Program Files\Notepad++ to your system path in System Properties Advanced Environment Variables System Variables PATH. 5. In System Properties add make LNK files executable. Go to System Properties Advanced Environment Variables System Variables PATHEXT. Click on Edit and add .LNK; 6. Now log out and log back in (to activate the environment variables). 7. Make sure Notepad++ is closed. 8. There are three zips within the package: Application Data.zip ConTeXt.zip Program Files.zip 9. Copy the directory Program Files\Notepad++ to Program Files. 10. Copy the directory Application Data\Notepad++ to Application Data. 11. Copy the contents of the directory ConTeXt to your ConTeXt tree. 12. For processing ConTeXt files, always use the batch file npp.bat to open Notepad++. npp.bat is based on cscite.bat. You can change the icon for the batch file by going to the file properties of npp.bat, Change Icon, and point it to Program Files\Notepad++\Notepad++.exe. I put a shortcut to npp.exe in the taskbar for easy access. 13. A note: In Preferences, always leave the option Remember the last operation directory unchecked. 14. Edit batch files in the ConTeXt directory to suit your needs. Please forward any major improvements! Have fun! === Message to ConTeXt mailing list, 12 Aug 2007: == Some background: I come from the WinEdt world originally. However WinEdt, while a fantastic TeX editor (perhaps the best), has a couple of problems: a) Geared towards LaTeX; b) No utf-8 support present or immediately planned (at least when I was using it); c) No Right-to-left support present or immediately planned (at least when I was using it); a) is not really a problem; one could easily configure WinEdt to be ConTeXt editor, but b) and c) were showstoppers. Scite is nice, but seems to me to be a real regression when compared to WinEdt's features. Finally I came across Notepad++, hereafter called Npp (actually it was Hans who told me about it first). This is one amazing text editor. Like Scite, it is based on Scintilla. It is a programmer's editor, but for a non-programmer user like myself it is amazingly easy to configure. Like

Before I do the rest, should I do $ texexec --make --alone or $ texexec --make (as per Han's recommendation?) And $ mktexlsr mktexlsr: Updating /home/mohamed/context-installation-directory/tex/texmf/ls-R... mktexlsr: Updating /home/mohamed/context-installation-directory/tex/texmf-context/ls-R... mktexlsr: Updating /home/mohamed/context-installation-directory/tex/texmf-linux-64/ls-R... mktexlsr: Done. [NTG-context] Fedora 9 (Linux) Installation
Hi, I can't seem to install ConTeXt manually. I've literally followed this page http://wiki.contextgaraden.net/Linux_User_Installation verbatim and I can't seem to compile even the most basic of documents. I'm running Fedora9 bit, and I do happen to have TeXLive with ConTeXt installed. The thing is I don't want to ruin the current install rather I'd like to have a version of ConTeXt that lives in my ~/. so that I can play about with it, I'm particurarly after the fonts that come with it. I've attached some files with the outputs of running the commands. a. source ~/.context_env $PWD/tex = results in nothing. b. mktexlsr = mktexlsrlog.txt c. texexec --version = texexec-version-log.txt d. texexec --check = check-texexec-log(copy).txt This simply doesn't work on my install it's meant to do what the author of the page said --- This will give you a lot of lines of output including the versions of various scripts, the version of pdftex and the version of ConTeXt. It will also generate a test file and run it through ConTeXt. You should get a pdf file called texexec.pdf with the word Test.. Didn't get anything :(. e. texexec first.tex = texexec-first-log.txt Ok now that's out of the way i've got a few questions regarding ConTeXt itself. 1. Is there an equivalent of the listing package? Take a look at listing-sample.pdf. It's also highly customizable, allowing me to change the colour etc. For instance here is my setup. \lstset{breaklines=true, showlines=true, % showing line numbers numbers=left, % where to show line numbers numberstyle=\scriptsize\sffamily\color{gray}, % numbersep=10pt, % stepnumber=1, % how often to show the line number on the left language=Java, % specifiy the language basicstyle=\scriptsize\ttfamily, % print whole listing small keywordstyle=\bfseries\color{eclipsekeyword}, % underlined bold black keywords identifierstyle=, % nothing happens commentstyle=\color{eclipsecomment}, % white comments, if you use commentstyle=\color{white}, it doesn't display the PRODID for the VCALENDAR stringstyle=\ttfamily, % typewriter type for strings showstringspaces=false, % no special string spaces frame=single, % bottom of listing gets a rule, use frame=single if you want awhole frame around it backgroundcolor=\color{white}, use frame=b for line a the bottom only backgroundcolor=\color{white}, tabsize=4, showspaces=false, showstringspaces=false} \lstset{morecomment=[s][\color{eclipsejavadoc}]{/**}{*/}}%, % morecomment=[s][\color{red}]{/*-}{*/}} And including the source code. \lstinputlisting[ caption={CalendarExtractor.java}, label=lst:CalendarExtractor.java] {source/CalendarExtractor.java} 2. Can someone please tell me if a book is being planned, I'd hate to print out the documentation and then come to realize that, say, two months down the line a book is available. 3. As you probably guessed I'm new to ConTeXt so if somewould could please tell me in what situation you would use each of the following files for, It'll clarify alot of things for. In particular what is the the main CONTEXT distribution. context/current/cont-tmf.zip the main CONTEXT distribution context/current/cont-img.zip a few resources for testing functionality context/current/cont-fnt.zip font metrics of public fonts context/current/cont-ext.zip third party CONTEXT modules context/current/cont-win.zip a binary version of the texmfstart script context/current/cont-ppc.zip chemical formulas in TEX: PPCHTEX context/current/cont-mpd.zip METAPOST to PDF converter context/install/cont-bas.zip base TEX distribution context/install/justtex.zip minimal CONTEXT distribution (no binaries) context/install/mswintex.zip minimal CONTEXT binaries (windows) context/install/linuxtex.zip minimal CONTEXT binaries (linux) context/install/macosxtex.zip minimal CONTEXT binaries (macosx) context/install/mswincontext.zip stand-alone CONTEXTediting environment (windows) Thank you very much ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
[NTG-context] Couple of questions
Hi, Firstly this is my first post :) (and it's going to be long), i've been using context for about a week or two and it's wonderful i like particularly like the approach of having everything built into the core. Just for reference i'm running fedora 9 64bit with texlive and i'm also new to TeX meaning that i've never bothered to study LaTeX thoroughly (as i was mainly concerned about just getting my content straight) and redefining macros was highly annoying, but things have changed now. Anyhow enough ranting i've got a few questions to ask. 1. CONTEXT, an excursion general/manuals/mp-cb-en.pdfgeneral/manuals/ms-cb-en.pdf The Manual general/manuals/cont-enp.pdfgeneral/manuals/cont-eni.pdf It's in the details general/manuals/details.pdf i) when are the manuals going to be updated? ii) details.pdf looks very interesting, i assume it's not finished right? any status info? 2. CONTEXT MkII MkIV general/manuals/mk.pdf i've slightly confused as to what LuaTeX is, could someone please explain it. from what i've gathered it seems like it supports the use of OpenType fonts natively like XeTex and it's going to be merged into pdfTeX? 3. Fonts general/manuals/mfonts.pdf and general/manuals/mtexfont.pdf Is is worth reading these manual since LuaTeX---as i've understood---is going to support them natively and i'm never going to have to install fonts again? 4. Typographic Programming general/manuals/style.pdf Any idea when the final release of this document is due, i'd like to make a print out. 5. Is there a book on ConTeXt, that is available for purchase from somewhere like amazon. if not does anyone know of a good (and cheap) printshop in London? I'd like to print out the manuals. 6. I forgot to ask, is there anything written about bibliography support? preferably through BibTeX. Thanks alot and great work ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
