[NTG-context] meeting not online
Hi everyone who was interested in participating in the meeting remotely, I just recognized I forgot to include some addresses in the participants address, thus some information didn’t reach the adressees. The DSL connection here in Dreifelden is very weak and unreliable – even if streaming works sometimes, usually it’s just enough for email. Yesterday we streamed for one guy via mobile connections, but those who offered their phones for it have now mostly used up their data volume and need the rest for themselves. We suspected the Wifi to be the bottleneck, but when I bought and installed an ethernet cable, it wouldn’t get better. I’m very sorry, but we can’t keep that up. The regulars like the “intimate” atmosphere, and that doesn’t work online. We don’t want to stream anything publicly, but at least allow “known” members of the community to participate remotely. We’ll further discuss this within the CG board, I guess. For several years I'm TUG member and always add some small donations for the LuaTeX project, free fonts etc. so I wonder whether e.g. LuaTeX is really getting some support from TUG membership? Tug and other user groups sponsor projects. In the beginning of Luatex there were projects defined (the bulk of code conversion from pascalweb to cweb + some extensions were a project), but the oriental tex project also contributed. Mplib and metapost 2 coding were sponsored by groups too. The crited project made it possible to integrate luajittex and luatex and it also supports the rewrite of the bibliography subsystem in mkiv (in fact this is the only time that writing related tex code is sponsored). Currently tug sponsors projects like texgyre and swiglib. The text and math font project(s) are mandate for the (future) success of tex and need substantial funding the upcoming decade too. We made estimates during BT but expect most to be covered by usergroups, possible as long as they have paying members. Groups that systematically contribute are tug, dante, ntg, cstug and gust. Afaik the context group is considering participation too. The context group is in principle an independent entity (same level as tex user groups) but can also support projects. For me, people meeting (and making sure they can meet and discuss) is also a project. [NTG-context] meeting
Hi, In case you didn't consider it yet ... in a couple of months we have the context meeting and this is a perfect opportunity to meet those involved in development and support. You can participate in discussions about upcoming developments, express wishes, get sneak previews, get your problems solved (meetings are quite efficient for that). Personally I like those meetings because it gives a face to users and also gives an idea in what direction to move. Also, tex related meetings are kind of special (beware, one can get hooked to them). [NTG-context] Meeting NTG saturday 18 november 2006
Dear list user, The Dutch TeX users group organizes a meeting on saturday 18 november. Location: Highschool Helicon, Zeist, The Netherlands. Theme: The next generation TeX - a glance on the future At the this moment active development takes place for the successor of pdfTeX. During next year this engine will be dirstributed. Next to this, steps are undertaken to improve the integration of the graphical possibilities of Metapost.in TeX. A bunch of new fonts are in the pipeline which can replace existing (free) font-collections: extended, improved, OTF versions. There are different initiatives for enhancing TeX and related programs e.g. giving them a more modern, up-to-date interface. Further one can see, that TeX is moving form the front-end into the background, so that users do not even know that the final work is performed with TeX. The mentioned aspects will be discussed and presented during the upcoming NTG-meeting. The NTG would like to invite you to join us.
