This means that you are most probably running plain TeX or LaTeX. In
front of the typset (play) button there is an engine drop-down menu
where you have to select ConTeXt.

But the problem is that with portable MikTeX, you will have to run
luatools --generate
context --make
in command line manually (or do some other trickery in texworks, but
anything else is probably more tricky to do than to open cmd and type
the commands from there). Fixing this would require changes that Hans
is most likely not willing to work on since it is an old version of
ConTeXt.

Yes.

 2) Does MKIV work in MikTeX?

In principle yes. There is a problem with the search pathes: context
finds files everywhere in the texmf-trees. This can lead to
problems.

 3) How often will the MikTeX distribution be updated with a new
 ConTeXt?

No idea.

 4) Does TeXworks (which is part of MikTeX distribution) work with ConTeXt?

I didn't try but I don't see a reason why not. You will have to add
tool which calls context.exe. I had no problems to adapt winedt.

You need to ask Christian Schenk about that. ConTeXt is tightly bound
to a specific LuaTeX version. So until version of LuaTeX is updated in
MikTeX, there is no way to update ConTeXt there (unless somebody does
a heavy patching or backporting of features; which won't happen). It
is quite possible that LuaTeX will only be updated with MikTeX 2.10.
The history of MikTeX says that there have usually been major version
releases in intervals from 8 months up to 3 years, so maybe you won't
see any ConTeXt update in MikTeX during the next year or two.

I used to have two separate trees: one for MikTeX and one from Pragma
and if MikTeX failed, I switched the distribution temporary.

 4) Does TeXworks (which is part of MikTeX distribution) work with ConTeXt?

There is no reason why it shouldn't.

Is it a firewall problem or something else?

Firewall. I am protected by two company firewalls (so I'm told). There
is no prospect of opening ports that are currently blocked and
'tunnelling' or whatever it's called would be seen as a contavention
of company rules!

 3) How often will the MikTeX distribution be updated with a new

I guess I'll carry on using my own update method then: I download
cont-tmf.zip (from http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-2.htm) then hunt
for new binaries in the directory tree at
http://minimals.contextgarden.net/. It's a pain but it seems to work
at the moment. It would be nice if there were a .zip file that
contained the latest binaries to go into texmf-mswin/bin. But perhaps
that would open up another can of worms!?
Perhaps now that MKIV has most features working I could just update
with the stable releases rather than the betas.

Thanks for your help.

If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed,
 you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX
 2.7\miktex\bin with the content:

 @echo off
 ruby C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb %*

 and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip
 http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C:\Program

 and everything should work again.

Hi David,

I had the same problem and now totaly switched from miktex to texlive.
Texlive has context in a new version in it and up to date a online
installer so that you only need about 2 MB for the first download and
the rest will come by launching the installer.
My advice would be to switch away from miktex to texlive it now has the
same onlineupdatefunktion as miktex.

some time ago some MikTeX users have complained that ConTeXt doesn't

  2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb texexec

I'm not so quick to blame MiKTeX -- I suspect texmfstart.rb would need
to provide some path searching tailored to MiKTeX. It seems to rely
on $0 with a tetex/texlive directory structure where SELFAUTOPARENT
can be used.

Christian has indeed replied that he uses the binary version of
texmfstart from CTAN (which is a bit older that the one on PRAGMA).
But I still don't understand what can go wrong in the middle of
nothing, without any major changes. So there is either a problem in
  MikTeX or in ConTeXt.

The only criticism of MiKTeX is that it is silly to distribute
a broken package, but then it is up to ConTeXt users to report breakage
and, ideally, supply fixes.

I completely agree. Except that I have no MikTeX any more. And I don't
have the slightest idea what could have caused the problem. I don't
see any serious changes in the texmfstart code that could break the
3-week-old version, while it has worked OK before.

Mea culpa. I should have forced Hans to fix it during BachoTeX ... :)
I will try to misuse some windows computer next week to see if I can

With this, I can format simple documents. The mpost problem seems to
be with the --8bit option, which comes from
tex.rb.

(But apparently there are not many MikTeX users on the list anyway.
  Else more would have complained.)

Don't complain, just switch to a platform/distro where ConTeXt works
and use mpm (since few others provide updates with the speed and
convenience of MiKTeX).

I think MiKTeX should remain focusing on the packages and binaries,
and rely on upstream to fix broken packages.

I agree. But I have thought that some change in MikTeX might have
  occurred in the meantime.

The problem with mpost suggests some tweaks are still needed
to handle differences between linux and miktex command lines.

the problem is that in tl 2006/7 natural.tcx is supposed to be shipped
with the main tree, but i have no clue if miktex ships that as well (and
supports tcx filters); the --8bit flag makes pdftex etc 8 bit clean
 (roundtrip)

Thank you Hans, for your quick reply.

I have a file natural.tcx in tex/texmf/web2c/natural.tcx.

I do not quite understand the rest of your reply. What do you suggest me
to do?

I am using Miktex 2.4.1461.

Already done for ver 2.5 during pre-release testing (see miktex bug: [
1532430 ] 2.5rc1 tex.rb uses pdfetex --8bit). Don't use MikTeX 2.4.

 Don't use MikTeX 2.4.

I can confirm that latest releases of ConTeXt (since the introduction
of ruby-based executables) have problems with MikTeX 2.4. Do you have
any chances to upgrade MikTeX to 2.5?

Subject: [NTG-context] context on miktex update not working

I had recently updated miktex including the context.
After update the context fails to work. The kpsewhich
was old as suggested by Mr.Hans Hagen and replaced it
with new one provided by him. but still not working.

I am attaching error file as generated by DOS.

I am using miktex + win Edt in winXP.

does other miktex updaters also have same error. IF
not why in my update. I have already updated context
twice from the internet as of 17 jun 05 update.

can any one point point out what is wrong?

Re: [NTG-context] context on miktex update not working

2005-06-30 Thread Mojca Miklavec
can someone make me a zip with miktex binaries [pdfetex and mpost cum suis and
database generator] + miktex config file?

What do you mean by database generator?

MikTeX is available on
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/. I
don't know what format .cab is, I open it with Total Commander, but
just in case you have problems accessing them, I'm sending a zip file
(off-list) for miktex-metapost-base.cab, miktex-metapost-bin.cab,
miktex-pdfetex.cab and miktex-config.cab. See also
http://www.miktex.org/manual/miktexinilayout.html.

Re: [NTG-context] context on miktex update not working

2005-06-23 Thread Willi Egger

Hi Upendran,

Though i am not a MIKTeX user your error file sounds like
you did not create the format files after updating ConTeXt. So you
should run e.g. texexec --make en mptopdf metafun

For the sake of being sure run the MIKTeX tool for updating its database.

In your error log there is also a message concerning the format path.
Please make shure that this path (which was modified in recent versions
of ConTeXt) is known to MIKTeX.

Also there is a message on fixing the pfttex executable. I guess that
this is not set correctly in you MIKTeX installation.

can you try

  texmfstart newtexexec --make --all

and see if that works better? i want to make newtexexec working ok with miktex
without needs for config files and such

(willy, do you have miktex on your machine so that we can have a look at it this
weekend?)
