[nysbirds-l] Baird's Sandpipe continues (Suffolk)

2011-08-27 Thread Douglas Futuyma
After finding that Robert Moses SP was closed (no surprise), I went to
Heckscher SP at about 12:30,, and found the previously reported Baird's
Sandpiper feeding actively in puddles in Field 7. (The lot was closed to
cars, but easily observed.) A Pectoral Sandpiper flew in and lingered
briefly before flying out with the several Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers
that were already there. Earlier, I had seen another Pectoral in the now
very wet swale south of Field 2 at Joes Beach West End, where I was beset by
fierce hordes of mosquitoes.
Before and after visiting Heckscher, I did some seawatching from the
boardwalk shelter at Jones Beach Field 6. Visibility was poor both times,
and I saw only a few gulls and distant terns over the ocean. Large flocks of
the common gulls were on the beach. The park was scheduled to close at 4 pm.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Suffolk County Parks closed?

2011-08-27 Thread Mike
I just got back from the Riverhead area- Indian Island County Park is
closed, and the attendant there told me that all Suffolk County parks are
closed. Seems kind of extreme if true- there are parks that are no where
near the coastline.

The golf course at Indian Island was open, but I didn't see any interesting
birds there or along the Peconic in Riverhead. The school fields were
completely empty of birds, and the Shoreham sod farm had just the usual
suspects- Black-bellied Plovers, Killdeer, Semi Plovers and a small group of
distant peeps.

2011-08-27 Thread Peter W. Post

I echo both Mike Cooper¹s and Bob Lewis¹ suggestions.

What about the Marine Park golf course? How about areas around Graves End
Bay, such as Dreier-Offerman Park. After one hurricane several Sooty Terns
were present near Owl¹s Head Park by the old Brooklyn-Staten Island Ferry
terminal. This off course was before the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Who knows
what effect this may have on seabirds since many are loath to fly under
bridges. I plan to be out checking the lawns, lakes and reservoir in Central
Park (especially if the eye goes over Manhattan) and the Hudson River along
Riverside Drive.

[nysbirds-l] Caspian Terns in Flushing

2011-08-27 Thread Seth Ausubel
An adult and a juvenile Caspian Tern are present today at the northeast corner
of Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadow-Corona Park, Queens. I was alerted to their
presence by Corey Finger. Apparently they were discovered this morning by Pete
Shen who posted to E-birds NYC. The spot can be accessed along the ramp to the
southbound Van Wyck Expwy just south of the Long Island Expwy, or from the
ramp to the eastbound L.I.E. From the northbound Van Wyck.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Where to Go

2011-08-27 Thread Mike
If anyone has other ideas of where birding could be done, I'm sure we'd
all

like to hear.

Assuming that we will not be able to get to the ocean, maybe next best would
be to try any large school ballfields, sod/ potoato farms and lakes or
ponds. I'm heading out to the Riverhead area now to see if Indian Island
County Park is open- other spots that come to mind in that area would be the
high schools at Riverhead and Westhampton, golf courses the Rte 51 and
Northville Turnpike farms. Also, Lake Ronkonoma might be one of the larger
bodies of water that might be accessible.

For those who want to bird vicariously, here are 3 webcams that are gibving
ocean views. If an albatross flies by, you might actually be able to see
it!

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull at Montauk

A surfing trip to Montauk this morning produced a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
at the Concession beach (and a sighting of Jimmy Buffet in his custom
surfing van) but otherwise not a lot to see.

Philip Dempsey and I later worked the mixed flock in my yard (in the
Northwest Woods of East Hampton) which produced a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER along
with a number of Magnolias, Redstarts and Black-and-White Warblers.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Gateway CLOSED

2011-08-27 Thread Steve Walter
I was at Floyd Bennet Field last night for moth surveying (but didn't find
the Baird's Sandpiper in the dark). I came across a sign that gave phone
number 718-358-4500 for information regarding Monday opening. No telling
when such information would be available. Expecting limited, if any, access
to the beaches, this is one of the bay sites I've thought about for Monday
and would want to go early. With already ample rain pools there, displaced
shorebirds could be expected (if not the sexier seabirds we'd rather be
looking for). The West Pond at the Wildlife Refuge should also be on the
radar, although shorefront landing spots for birds that require that could
be problematic. From a physical standpoint, I don't think access to the
refuge could be prevented. While this is in the so called Zone A for
mandatory evacuation, I would think driving to the refuge Monday should be
permissible (depending of course on driving conditions) (but I'm guessing).
If anyone has other ideas of where birding could be done, I'm sure we'd all
like to hear.

Steve Walter

[nysbirds-l] Additional beach closures

It is likely that closures will be very widespread in coastal areas across
Long Island. The Town of East Hampton (incl. Montauk) has issued a voluntary
evacuation notice. More significantly, they have already closed the ocean
beaches and all state parks. There is mention of road closures but no
specifics yet.

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull at Montauk

2011-08-27 Thread Anthony Collerton
A surfing trip to Montauk this morning produced a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
at the Concession beach (and a sighting of Jimmy Buffet in his custom
surfing van) but otherwise not a lot to see.

Philip Dempsey and I later worked the mixed flock in my yard (in the
Northwest Woods of East Hampton) which produced a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER along
with a number of Magnolias, Redstarts and Black-and-White Warblers.

[nysbirds-l] Additional beach closures

2011-08-27 Thread Angus Wilson
It is likely that closures will be very widespread in coastal areas across
Long Island. The Town of East Hampton (incl. Montauk) has issued a voluntary
evacuation notice. More significantly, they have already closed the ocean
beaches and all state parks. There is mention of road closures but no
specifics yet.

They always close early for storms and any sign of bad weather. During last
winter's snowstorm they were closed for an extra day after everyone else was
back to work. They'll probably take Monday off as well. Your government ( not)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Where to Go

2011-08-27 Thread Mike
If anyone has other ideas of where birding could be done, I'm sure we'd

If an albatross flies by, you might actually be able to see
it!

What about the Marine Park golf course? How about areas around Graves End
Bay, such as Dreier-Offerman Park. After one hurricane several Sooty Terns
were present near Owl’s Head Park by the old Brooklyn-Staten Island Ferry
