Just a reminder that the property owners have specifically requested NO WEEKEND
VISITS.

I know of at least one person who was planning a long drive this weekend to see
the bird, but I was able to let them know of the weekend restriction.  It will
be unfortunate if others aren't aware of this and either arrive and are
disappointed, or worst unintentionally invade upon the owners privacy which
could result in shutting down all visit.  Get the word out.  The Rehman's
have graciously provided access to their property and we all need to honor
their weekend privacy.

Does anyone know of ways to raise awareness of this outside on NJ?

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park

2012-01-04 Thread Sy Schiff
Pelham Bay Park, 4 January 2012

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo, Debbie Martin and I (Sy Schiff) braved the cold
(fortunately no wind) and ventured into the woods. While most birds were
scarce, we managed a mix of woodland birds: Red-tailed Hawk, 4 Woodpecker
species, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch and a large number of flying
birders, namely Blue Jays, who found us a Long-eared Owl.

In the water were Black Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Bufflehead,
Red-breasted Merganser, Canada Geese and a lone Brant.

Good birding, Sy

"Hi Frank - As we discussed here are our guidelines:

We are OK with people coming to the house to look for the bird as long as
the following are respected: No weekend visitations as our kids are
outside all the time and the chaffinch is unlikely to be present during
this time frame. Monday - Friday with the earliest time to arrive being
7:30 AM. We have a large cul-de-sac next to our driveway where parking is
safe and ample. As you walk up the driveway please bear to the right
as soon as the lawn appears and make your way around the house to
the porch. This is the best viewing location and will prevent the
possibility of a birder coming up a different way and potentially scaring
the bird off. The feeders are in our back yard which is where the bird has
been observed multiple times. It typically comes in with the
White-throated Sparrows and juncos but has occasionally been observed
individually. The bird has been spotted in both the morning and early
afternoon hours. ... I am an avid birder and understand that many wish to
observe the Chaffinch but please respect these guidelines and our property
so that many can hopefully enjoy the bird while it remains here. Good luck.

[nysbirds-l] extralimital - New Jersey Chaffinch

2012-01-04 Thread David Klauber

The Chaffinch in Union New Jersey was seen well by all this morning, making
appearances about every 20 minutes on the ground at the base of the left-most
feeder, as viewed from the porch (from 8-9 at least). Details are given on the
New Jersey RBA found at birdingonthe.net.
Please note the homeowner's request - no weekend visiting and do not arrive
before 7:30 AM. Also their instructions found under guidelines on the RBA
saying to cross over the lawn in front of their house to the large porch on the
side, where you have views of the feeders.

For those coming from Long Island it took us about 2 hours from SE Nassau
County. GPS, Mapquest and Google maps suggest a route through the Holland
Tunnel. I recommend taking the Staten Island Expressway over the Goethals
Bridge, going north a few miles on I-95 to 78 west until you get to the area of
Union NJ. These are all highway miles, avoiding the "more direct" routes
suggested by GPS, etc. after the Goethals, that take you through local NJ
roads. Note that at exit 11 or 13 off 78(different instructions from different
software, not sure of the exact town - Union?) there is a Exxon with a Dunkin'
Donuts for a pitstop a few miles from the home. There is plenty of parking by
the house at 6 Fawn Way as there is a large cul-de-sac. Thanks to Michael
Rehman for his generous hospitality.
There are discussions of origins. There are accepted records in Maine,
Massachusetts, New Hamphire, and Vermont as well as several Canadian provinces,
according to my Avisys software. This bird is a nicely plumaged male. Good luck
to all who go

[nysbirds-l] Manhattan Park Birds continuing ...

2012-01-04 Thread Anthony Collerton
Finally got to some of the Midtown parks today. The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was
present just West of the AMNH 81st Street entrance at around 9:30am. A
walk through Central Park produced a FOX SPARROW, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
and the continuing RED-HEADED WOODPECKER (NW corner of the fenced preserve
around the Pond). The (surviving) YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT continues in the
terrance at the NE of the New York Public Library. In Bryant Park itself I
saw at least one GRAY CATBIRD, an OVENBIRD and the LINCOLN'S SPARROW (SW
corner of the Ice Rink). I could not find a Common Yellowthroat.

safe and ample.
Good luck.

Just a reminder that the property owners have specifically requested NO
 WEEKEND VISITS.

I know of at least one person who was planning a long drive this weekend
to see the bird, but I was able to let them know of the weekend
restriction. It will be unfortunate if others aren't aware of this and
either arrive and are disappointed, or worst unintentionally invade upon
the owners privacy which could result in shutting down all visit. Get the
word out. The Rehman's have graciously provided access to their property
and we all need to honor their weekend privacy.
