[nysbirds-l] 5/8, South Shore--Kittiwake, Gull-billed Tern+
Hi All, Anthony Collerton and I hit up various spots along the south shore of Long Island this late morning and afternoon. Though we did not encounter any Jaegers or Roseate Terns, by far the most unexpected find was an adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE moving east very close to shore at about 11:30, seen on the ocean side of Mecox Bay. 10 BLACK SCOTER, at least 10 RED-THROATED LOONS, and 4 LEAST TERNS, among the more numerous COMMON LOON and NORTHERN GANNETS. On the inside of Mecox bay we had a single BONAPARTE'S GULL (still in non-breeding plumage), a single PIPING PLOVER, DUNLIN and SANDERLING. All of this was after we had the CATTLE EGRET at the Mecox Bay Dairy. Just around the corner from there, 2 male ORCHARD ORIOLES were singing on Halsey Lane. We had at least 12 COMMON EIDER in Shinnecock Bay, and the COMMON RAVEN near its nest in Hampton Bays. Dune Road was rather quiet, but did hold a handful of SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, WILLETS and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS as well as SALTMARSH SPARROW, CLAPPER RAIL and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. At Jones Beach we were treated to two GULL-BILLED TERNS at the Coast Guard Station around 5:30 pm. [nysbirds-l] Parasitic Jaegers & Piping Plovers, Robert Moses S.P. (Suffolk Co.)
I did some seawatching this afternoon (4:00-4:45) at Robert Moses State Park from the Field 2 pavilion. Among the steady stream of primarily eastbound N. Gannets (80% imm-subadult/20% adult) I observed 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS-- a single bird followed less than 10 minutes later by 2 birds traveling together. All three were only ~100 yards offshore, providing decent scope views. No other pelagic species were sighted (was hoping for an early Sooty Shearwater). Other seabirds seen included Common (3) and Red-throated (1) loons, Laughing, Herring, and Great Black-backed gulls, and Common Terns. Before beginning the seawatch, I observed 3 PIPING PLOVERS inside the cordoned-off upper beach south of the golf course--2 females incubating inside predator exclosures, and 1 male that scurried to hide behind a piece of driftwood. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Central Park North End, May 8th
Cloud cover and winds gusting over 20 mph made for challenging birding conditions this morning in Central Park's North End. Starr Saphir's group saw both fewer total birds and fewer total species -- 51 -- than in recent walks, but quality was very high. We had 17 warbler species including CAPE MAY, WORM-EATING, and BLACKBURNIAN. We had our first-of-season CEDAR WAXWINGS, and enjoyed great looks at male SCARLET TANAGER, INDIGO BUNTING, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, the latter in alternative orange-breasted plumage. Calls of BALTIMORE ORIOLEs were heard throughout the walk. Highlights: Hermit Thrush (Ridge Trail; very late for species) Cedar Waxwing (Great Hill) Worm-eating W. (North Woods) Cape May W. (Great Hill, trees south of running track) Blackburnian W. (Ridge Trail in North Woods) Chestnut-sided W. (Loch) Canada W. [nysbirds-l] Parasitic Jaeger(s) at Robert Moses State Park (Suffolk Co.)
A forty minute sea watch from RMSP Field 2 consisted of mostly watching feeding Northern Gannets. However, after about twenty minutes an adult Parasitic Jaeger flew by, close to shore and heading east. About ten minutes later a second adult Parasitic Jaeger, possibly the same bird, passed by further offshore, flying west. [nysbirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler NYC 5/8
Tuesday, 8 May, 2012 - Bryant Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City The long-staying PROTHONOTARY Warbler remains in Bryant Park in mid- town Manhattan, seen earlier today in the SW part of the park, as reported by Matthew Rymkiewicz, and by others off any list-serve. The SW part of Bryant Park is nearer to the corner of Sixth Avenue and 40th Street than to other parts of the park. There have not been any additional reports of a Kentucky Warbler from the same park in some days. In the past week, more than a dozen species of wood-warblers had been found in Bryant Park including Blackpoll Warbler on both Friday and Saturday with multiple observers of that & many others of the migrants in that small space.
