[nysbirds-l] Sooty Shearwater Mortality

2012-05-29 Thread Paul R Sweet
While 3 birds does not constitute a mass mortality event, I have been contacted
today by two people with dead Sooty Shearwaters found on the beaches of the New
York Bight. One at Far Rockaway and one on Monmouth Beach NJ. This follows the
moribund bird mentioned by Chase from Robert Moses. Birders walking the beaches
please keep their eyes open for dead seabirds and contact me if you find
anything. If anyone is available to run out to Rockaway to pick up a bird for
me please contact me off list. Thanks, Paul

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt at Jones Beach (Nassau Co.) 5-29-12

2012-05-29 Thread TESSA1
I received a message from Ed Becher at about 2:15 this afternoon while he
was with a Black-necked Stilt at Zach's Bay, resting beside an
Oystercatcher. He initially found this bird in one of the shallow ponds within
 the Golf
Course area before it flew over to the Bay. I didn't get to chase this
one, but birders should be aware that Stilt sightings are often not just 1
day wonders. Some can linger for days, like one I recall that stayed at Cow
Meadow Park in Freeport for at least 3 days back in about 2003, so hopefully
it'll hang around for others.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Mississippi Kites - Yes!

2012-05-29 Thread Corey Finger
Both Mississippi Kites were present this morning at the Sterling Forest
Visitor's Center from when I arrived at 7:05 AM until I left at about 8:30 AM.
There were quite a few birders around enjoying the show, which included
snagging insects (seemed like dragonflies), carrying sticks, and just being
kites. Great birds!

Also of note at the same spot was a singing Cerulean Warbler.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Mecox Wilson's Phalaropes Yes; Gilgo ST Flycatcher No (not yet)

2012-05-29 Thread Shaibal Mitra
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher vanished before we got there, and a quick search
by Bob, Sarah, Ken & Sue Feustel, Pat, and I did not produce it. There was a
hint of overhead movement east to west, including a very unseasonal Pine
Siskin, so I think it might pay to search any and all vagrant traps along the
coast (mid June is a great time for landbird vagrants on LI, and it certainly
feels like late June here already).

On a more positive note, Mike Higgiston reports that the two Wilson's
Phalaropes are still present at Mecox Bay.

[nysbirds-l] Mississippi kites at Sterling Forest

2012-05-29 Thread David Baker
A dozen or so birders from Orange County and NYC spotted and photographed a pair of Mississippi kites at the parking lot just above the Visitors Center at Sterling Forest SP in Orange Co.  First sightings were around 9:00 AM at which time the birds departed and did not return until 3:00 PM.  I've attached several photos of at least one of the individuals.
