The Ross's Goose (seen and reported by many) was also still at the swimming

associating with a group of Mallards and Ring-billed Gulls. A complete list of
birds cane be seen on eBird:

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Birds (Nassau Co.)

2014-12-29 Thread ken feustel
Sue and I spent a few hours birding at Massapequa Preserve (MP) this morning.
We came up with a decent list of half-hardies and early winter malingerers.
Waterfowl numbers on the Pittsburg Ave. Pond was low, but did include a female
Wood Duck. We recorded both kinglets around the pond as well as Gray Catbird.
We headed north up the bike trail to see what we could see. A Viriginia Rail
tape played at the pond north of Pittsburg Ave.(famous for nesting Least
Bitterns a few year ago) turned up nothing, but two Marsh Wrens were busy
calling in the Phragmites on the East side of the pond along the bike trail.
Near the foot bridge on the West side of the pond we found an Orange-crowned
Warbler. Sparrow numbers seemed below average and we did not see any Fox
Sparrows. However, compared to locations we birded on two earlier bird counts
MP seemed positively jumping with activity.

Re: [nysbirds-l] NYC Couch's Kingbird update?

2014-12-29 Thread B Inskeep
No sighting of the Couch's Kingbird today with multiple birders scouring the
area, many present since first light.

Cassin's Kingbird was still present at Floyd Bennett Field at the community
gardens making its first appearance at 0930 once the sky cleared mostly staying
near the gazebo and picnic area where there is a small plastic children's
playhouse with a blue roof.

2014-12-29 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
I just got to Abington sq took subway from midtown give it a shot. No luck in 5
minutes. Two young birders rigged out in Swarovski and big camera got in from
CT early this am spending most time around Jane + Washington - NO kingbird for
them all day. On way to Washington and Jane passed 3 more birders been at it "a
couple of hours" NO sighting. Lots of people with bins at wash + Jane. Breaking
my don't chase rarities honored in the breach today my 10 minutes (so far) has
yielded no better luck. I too had been hoping someone would have posted earlier
but most folks apparently don't like bad news I guess. Kind of odd in this

Also, many people have obtained superb images of the bird and it would helpful

Re: [nysbirds-l] NYC Couch's Kingbird update?

2014-12-29 Thread B Inskeep
No sighting of the Couch's Kingbird today with multiple birders scouring the
area, many present since first light.

Cassin's Kingbird was still present at Floyd Bennett Field at the community
gardens making its first appearance at 0930 once the sky cleared mostly staying
near the gazebo and picnic area where there is a small plastic children's
playhouse with a blue roof.

I've not seen any posting positive or negative today. In view of the
considerable regional interest in this exciting visitor, I think it would be
nice gesture if folks visiting the spot today and onwards could post regular
updates, even if negative. At a minimum a broadcast after the first sighting
of the day indicating that the bird survived the night would be most welcome,
especially to those traveling from afar.

Hour-by-hour updates seems like overkill at this point (and would be tiresome
to other users of this list), but networking among folks on site (as proposed
by Hugh McGuinness yesterday) makes sense.

Also, many people have obtained superb images of the bird and it would
helpful if these could be submitted to NYSARC for review and archiving.
Images showing the spread wings with the primary tips in sharp focus would be
especially valuable. Likewise we'd appreciate images clearly showing the
bill, tail notch and of course, clear recordings of the all important
 vocalizations.

Submission details can be found on our website

 Thanks and good luck.

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Photos?

2014-12-29 Thread Gabriel Willow
Hey all,

So although the kingbird has been hiding this far today, CBS News was here to
film a story on the bird, and they want photos for the piece. If anyone has
any good ones and wants to share their photos or video, email them to
mbaker(at)CBS.com ASAP.

Cheers,

Gabriel Willow
