[nysbirds-l] Newburgh (Orange County) Hudson River Gulls

2015-01-19 Thread Curt McDermott
Just a quick update...
Over the past month, Iceland Gulls have become a fairly regular event on
the Hudson at Newburgh. The only exception to that rule occurred from roughly
the 9th or so until last friday(1/16),when to my knowledge none were seen.
Prior to that, we had at least 2 individual 1st year birds and a second year
bird. This past Friday (1/16) I had an adult Iceland just south of the Gull
Harbor Marina (Public Boat Launch) at the foot of Washington St. This
evening, while out for a short time with my wife(Clara) and Father (Ken
McDermott) I spotted a very dark mantled bird that I was unable to get a
positive ID on due to fading light, distance and only being able to view the
bird while it laid on the ice. The bird of interest appeared to be slightly
smaller than neighboring Herring Gulls. The bird had a black ring around the
bill with no obvious red mark on the lower mandible. The bird lacked the
streaking on the head and nape, typically found on most winter plumage Lesser
Black-backed and Slaty-backed Gulls. The bird appeared to show a slight dark
smudge, concentrated around the eye. I was unable to get any color on the eye
itself. Due to the fact that it was laying down, I was not able to get leg
color. For no apparent reason, this gull and surrounding gulls lifted off and
headed into Cornwall Bay, where they more than likely, are spending the night.
At the time the gulls lifted off, I had briefly turned away from the bird. I
never got a look at the bird in flight and after moving further south and
scanning the area, never got on the gull again. Although I know it was not a
Great Black-backed, I do not know what it was. I hope that local birders will
keep an eye out for this bird. It's Ironic that sometimes the most interesting
birds are the ones that aren't positively ID'd..
Good Birding, Curt McDermott
PS. The Dutchess County side of the Hudson has fairly solid ice extending out
approx. 200 meters/yards. Recently, that ice edge has held upwards of 3,000
gulls in the late afternoon. Free floating ice is beginning to appear on all
parts of the river. This ice holds gulls as well. I recently heard a report
that the river in Green County County is frozen all the way across. If these
conditions continue, gull activity in Orange should be picking up soon.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve - 1/19

2015-01-19 Thread Michael Zito
Both Warblers (NASHVILLE and ORANGE-CROWNED) were eventually seen today
with some persistence at the preserve. They were spotted just north of the
Walker Street entrance. I stood by the abandoned air conditioner in the
stream and watched them feed on the cat-tails across from the stream. I
actually looked for the cat-tails to move slightly and then I was able to
target where they were. A local told me of a GREAT-HORNED owl he heard in
the area at night. Just of note: Things got quiet in the later morning if
you were there then, probably due to a Cooper's/Sharp-Shinned HAWK (not
sure which one) in the area. I actually saw him crash into the cat-tails,
I followed where he went and observed he did not get any of the warblers.

Also in this area of interest were some downy woodpeckers (pecking at the
cat-tails), white-breasted nuthatch (heard), and a number of chickadees.

I walked south of the Walker Street entrance to see the grey SCREECH OWL,
who was visible in his usual hole.

A trip north of Clark Street turned up a continuing male WOOD DUCK in the
stream, along with a hybrid mallard of sorts. I also spotted a female WOOD
DUCK in the Pittsburgh Ave. pond. Did not notice any Eurasian Wigeons in
the pond, but heard from someone they were more up north.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull at Jones Beach

2015-01-19 Thread Steve Walter
Another interesting adult Iceland Gull was in the Jones Beach West End 2
parking lot during the mid-day today. Characteristics included a rather
large, angular head, pale but not yellow eye, and blackish wing tips. To my
eye, the overall size appeared a tad larger than the closest Herring Gull.
It could be the same individual that has appeared there intermittently in
past years, although it didn't match up perfectly with pictures I took last
year. The streaking on the head was a bit darker than last year's (not sure
if that can vary across different molts) and the wing tips appeared more
dark gray than black in flight. The pattern in the wings is subtly
different, but then I'm also seeing differences between the left and right
wing of today's bird. Leg color was what I'll call a lavender pink (same as
last year's) -- not as bright as I've seen on others. Since I've done
Iceland Gull pictorials in the past, I'm not ready to post this one at this
time. I might still, if there's interest.

[nysbirds-l] Canvasback at Brooklyn Bridge Park

2015-01-19 Thread Matthew Wills
Found a male Canvasback hanging out with small crowd of Gadwall on the rocks at
the little beach at Pier 4 ruins in Brooklyn Bridge Park this afternoon. First
time I've seen one here. Bright white body, with those fantastic red eyes!
Seemed pretty tolerant of holiday scamps & leashed dogs on the beach. I will
post pictures on my blog soon/later.

[nysbirds-l] Common Raven in Roslyn

2015-01-19 Thread Avery Scott (SkyOfBirds)
I observed what I believe to be the Common Raven that has nested in Roslyn
in the past today. The bird was over Cedarmere Preserve. I got good looks,
heard the call very well, and got a bad video, which you can see here:

[nysbirds-l] Canvasback at Brooklyn Bridge Park

2015-01-19 Thread Matthew Wills
Found a male Canvasback hanging out with small crowd of Gadwall on the rocks at
the little beach at Pier 4 ruins in Brooklyn Bridge Park this afternoon. First
time I've seen one here. Bright white body, with those fantastic red eyes!
Seemed pretty tolerant of holiday scamps leashed dogs on the beach. I will
post pictures on my blog soon/later.
