[nysbirds-l] Cold & quiet = good birding...from the car !

2015-02-06 Thread robert adamo
I was able to spend ~ 4 hours in the field today (1100-1500), starting at
Merritt's Pond, in Riverhead, before going down to Dune Rd., from the
Jessup Ave Bridge, Westhampton to the Shinnicock Inlet, Hampton Bays.

There were no "special" waterfowl (at least, that I could find) on the
pond, but I did manage to roust my FOS Winter Wren while changing scope
locations there !

Dune Rd. was fairly quiet, but I did see 2, possibly 3, brown plumaged N.
Harriers as they hunted over the marshes near Triton La. I also picked up
my FOS Tree Sparrow, just e/o the Ponquoge Bridge. At the inlet, on the bay
side, the large # of C. Eiders were still there, however, during 2 fast
scans ("But Baby, it's cold outside") I couldn't locate the King Eider.
Also, hauled out on their favorite sand-bar, were ~ 20 seals. Next up was
the ocean side, (from the mouth of the inlet, westward) where a much
smaller # of C. Eiders, along with Surf & Black Scoters were on patrol. A
good # of gulls were basking in the sunshine that bathed the west
breakwater, and that is where I got my FOS Glaucous Gull !

Cheers,
Bob

Since I haven't seen a post on this bird I figured I'd let people know that a

Grasslands NWR in Wallkill today.  The photos were on Facebook on the NY

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sibley replacements

2015-02-06 Thread Michael Scheibel
Re: Sibley, 2nd edition. This morning, I called the number given in an
earlier post (1 800 793 2665) twice, both times I was told by two different
reps there is no replacement program available from Knopf, and that the
information circulating on the internet is false.

I called when it was first reported to this list. The first person I spoke
with said that all retailers were sent a letter in NOVEMBER stating there
was a replacement and that retailers would replace. I hung up and called
back. The next person said the same thing. I then said well I bought my
book on the release date and I no longer had my receipt as I didn't know I
would have to replace it. She then took my contact information and stated
that there is a list and that within a few weeks I would receive by UPS a
new version of Sibleys. I would suggest calling back.

I just spoke with Knopf Publishing about the replacements of Sibley's 2nd

This was apparently an understanding with some individuals but not a recall
 for general purchases. Too bad.
