RE:[nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker hole?

2015-02-14 Thread Rich Perkins / TAM
Hi again,

Thanks for all the feedback on the pictures. I received about 12 emails and
everyone thought it was a Pileated Woodpecker hole. Some had complete
certainty! We'll go back tomorrow and see if we have any luck finding it!!

If you have any further feedback or comments please send.

Thank you.

Subject: Pileator Woodpecker hole?

Aidan and I were walking in Avalon Preserve today in Stony Brook, NY and
came across two fresh holes in a dead tree. It really looks like something
a Pileated Woodpecker would make. Does anyone have any thoughts on what
this hole could be if not a Pileated? Below is a link to the picture on
Flicker.

[nysbirds-l] Sands Point Barrows Goldeneye

2015-02-14 Thread Jeffrey Ritter

The drake Barrows Goldeneye was present in waters a half mile or so west of
Sands Point Preserve on the north shore of LI. I walked the beach around low
tide at noon and found the bird among t he numerous Common Goldeneye. Easy to
pick out with the scope.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing

2015-02-14 Thread Steve Walter
I posted a picture at http://www.stevewalternature.com/ from this morning.
I was with Steve Schellenger and John Gaglione, when John spotted the
Bohemian Waxwing at the top of a deciduous tree in the area where it's been
seen before - where you descend into the median area at the turnaround. That
made it easy and we were able to see where it flew down to. If down low
among the bushes - and not along the edge - it could easily go undetected. A
gray bird in a gray background, as the picture will show.

[nysbirds-l] Common Merganser CP Reservoir

2015-02-14 Thread Gabriel Willow
I led a winter bird walk for NYC Audubon in Central Park today. It was chilly
and damp but we saw some nice stuff.

Highlights included a stunning male Common Merganser in the reservoir (open
water near the fountain at south end), along with 3 female Hooded Merganser, 2
Am. Coot, and numerous mallards, Canada geese, and gulls (no rare gulls that I
could pick out).

At the feeders we had the lingering Common Redpoll along with ~ 20 American
Goldfinches, an American Tree Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, and 4 Fox Sparrows.

A Brown Thrasher was a surprise at Strawberry Fields.

We also saw 4 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, which seems like a lot for a cold
winter...

Good Cold Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon this morning: NO

2015-02-14 Thread Corey Finger
Carrie Laben and I spent from early AM through 10:30 AM trying to find the
Gyrfalcon with no luck. It apparently is most reliable in the afternoon.

Only birds of note during our visit were two Rough-legged Hawks (one at
Shawangunk, one along Hoagerburgh), 2 Bald Eagles at the spillway on the
Wallkill River, Common Goldeneyes, Hooded Mergansers, and a Common
Merganser downstream from the spillway, an American Kestrel on Bruyn
Turnpike, a Peregrine Falcon on Bates Lane, and a couple of Horned Lark
flocks around Blue Chip Farm.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Any gyrfalcon sightings today? Feb 14?

2015-02-14 Thread Thomas Rhindress
Wondering if it is worth the 1.5 hour drive to search the back roads near.
Blue Chip Farms for the gyrfalcon. Haven't seen any updates here or on
ebird since yesterday.

Thank you in advance
