[nysbirds-l] Nest Bald Eagles - South Shore

2015-04-01 Thread leormand .
Around 11 AM this morning I checked out another reported Bald Eagle Nest
and found the "adult" in a tree near the nest (which was an old osprey nest
apparently). The other bird in the pair is not in full adult plumage -
which at the very least makes it easy to tell them apart. I watched the
"adult" bring some nesting material to the nest, as well as a nest
exchange. Both birds did some lazy chasing of nearby Osprey.

Around 6 PM I returned and the Adult was again perched on a nearby tree.
An Osprey nest across the creek (and very near me) apparently has a pair of
birds - though no eggs have been laid yet as far as I can tell and the nest
could use some more material. At one point, one Osprey went up the creek
and caught a fish (I didn't see this) which prompted to Eagle to give
chase. Not too long after, the Osprey dropped the fish and the Eagle
continued to chase the Osprey until the Osprey's partner came in and
everyone flew back to their respective nests.

Quite a few ducks around and some horned grebes as well but the Eagle
didn't seem interested.

The nest is publicly known, however the trail leading to it has been
blocked off. I viewed it from across the creek, though the access to that
point is not officially "open" yet and as such I will not disclose the
location so as to not encourage trespassing or additional stress on the
Osprey which are very near the viewing point.

We have had several in the last ten years try to winter in Region 5. At least
one made it well into a normal wintry January and may have survived to the end.
The Valley Stream SP bird may have shown up as part of a northbound movement,
but can one be sure it didn't winter there?

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead Plains/Massapequa Park - Nassau County (4/1)

2015-04-01 Thread Michael Zito
At the Hempstead Plains there was an osprey fishing the recharge basin next
to the plains, it caught a goldfish and flew to a nearby light post to
feed. I was looking at some Eastern Phoebes, and a nice looking American
Kestrel caught my eye. He then proceeded to fly out of view. Other birds
included red-winged blackbirds, grackles, a couple of tagged Canada geese,
and three green-winged teals in the basin.

At Massapequa Park there were a good number of ospreys and great blue
herons flying overhead the Pittsburgh pond. In the pond there was 1
northern shoveler and 3 ruddy ducks that I spotted. Eastern Phoebes seemed
to be everywhere you turned feeding on the abundant insects around.

Lots of garbage at both parks :\

[nysbirds-l] YTWA continues @ Valley Stream State Park

2015-04-01 Thread Andrew Baksh
Bobby Berlingeri reports that the Yellow-throated Warbler (YTWA), continues
at Valley Stream State Park, Nassau Co.

According to Bobby, the bird was seen well with Ceaser near where the two
streams converge (extreme south end), which is by the foot bridge.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow Throated Warblet -yes

2015-04-01 Thread Cesar Castillo
I found the bird working its way north on the stream banks.  The bird is
staying low.  I found it on the stream section near the intersection of Decker
street and Rockaway parkway.  You can see the street signs from the stream.
There was a male and female pine warbler that seemed to be traveling with him.

[nysbirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush, Redpolls- Fuchs Pond

2015-04-01 Thread Taylor Sturm
The Louisiana Waterthrush found yesterday by Mike Scheibel continues in the
creek running parallel to Waterside Ave at Fuchs Pond Preserve. Also of note is
a flock of about 10 common redpolls feeding and calling in the trees for the
second day in a row.
An amusing combo of winter and spring.
Good birding,
