[nysbirds-l] "It Takes a Village"

2015-04-11 Thread robert adamo
Late last night, I decided to try for the dazzling super-vagrant reported
in Montgomery, Orange County, today. This morning, while still at home, and
again right after gassing up, and getting on the LIE, I made 5 calls to
prospective trip mates, who to a man, couldn't, or in one instance, had
seen the bird yesterday . It was a fairly long day, during which I put 323
miles on my wife's Prius, which at 46 mpg, at least made it easy on the
pocket-book !

Before going on I would like to thank:

1) Curt McDermott for finding the Crested Caracara.
2) P.J. Singh for re-finding the bird.
3} Karen Miller for allowing me to follow her from spot #1 to spot #2,
after arriving at the Rt. 17K location at ~ 1145, only to find that it had
been seen on the other side of town, at the golf course o/o Rt 208.
4) Bob Proniewych for being "Top Gun" out of a group of ~ 15 of us, by
calling out the Caracara in a maze ot trees, after we had been at spot #2
for some time, constantly checking out the sky, the trees, the dead possum,
and anything that moved !
5) The owner of the golf course for his hospitality.

This bird, of course was a state bird for me, and as I went to enter it in
my "Birding Bible", was a bit surprised to find the date of my first ever
C/C (aka Audubon's Caracara) to be just a day off, on 4/12/97. Even though
today's weather was delightful, I'm sure it was well below the earlier
date, which occurred in Tambor, on the west coast of Costa Rica !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite - almost NY

2015-04-11 Thread Steve Walter
Today's weather forecast didn't seem like a good prescription for a pelagic
trip -but it was perfect for hawk watching, especially after four days of
overcast and east winds. So I decided I'd deal with some of my least
favorite roads in the world and go to Sandy Hook (NJ) for the first time in
a few years. It paid off with over 300 hawks, highlighted by (finally) my
first Swallow-tailed Kite in the north. It's not quite New York, but as it
didn't come back south like some water crossing fearing hawks, it's almost a
certainty that it crossed over into New York (I was thinking that observers
in Central Park should be on the lookout). I won't be posting a picture, as
I didn't get the best angle and distance on it (I have lots of pictures from
the south, so I'm not fretting over that). I couldn't help but think that
had it been three years ago, I might have been sitting on a boardwalk right
under the kite, but Sandy happened and I had to pick a different spot (which
was still well positioned for many of the falcons).

The rest of the flight included 208 American Kestrels, 55 Merlins, 34
Ospreys, and smaller numbers of Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Northern
Harrier, Bald Eagle, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk, and Peregrine Falcon - a very nice variety, with hawks
passing with a frequency near that of Caracara updates. There was also a
constant flow of swallows through the day, with Trees well outnumbering Barn
and Rough-winged. A few Fish Crows appeared to be in migration and a few
flocks of Cedar Waxwings were earlier than I've come to expect of them in
spring. Overall, just nice to watch birds actually on the move north. I took
a peak at the ocean at the end of the day, and saw a spectacle of thousands
of ducks. In order of abundance, Black Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Surf
Scoter, Greater Scaup, and White-winged Scoter - more birds poised to
imminently migrate through New York.

On the way back, I stopped off at Gravesend Bay (and many other points right
on the Belt Parkway) and quickly found the continuing Glaucous Gull flying
around.

[nysbirds-l] Crested Caracara: Scott's Corners Golf Course, Montgomery, NY

2015-04-11 Thread akmirth

As mentioned in earlier posts, the manager of the golf course, John DiMartino,
has requested that no one park along the road but was gracious enough to let us
go to the parking lot. He was amazed that birders from Queens and Long Island
had traveled all this way to see the bird. Incidentally, his son, also named
John, looked up the bird on his smart phone and said, "Oh yeah, it's been
hanging around here for at least a week".

Those going tomorrow might want to return John's hospitality; he has fresh
coffee and hot grill food for sale.

[nysbirds-l] Crested Caracara Montgomery NY late evening YES

2015-04-11 Thread pjlindsay
Holly Wilson and Phillip Camhi arrived at the Scotts Corners Golf Course
off 208 around 6:30 p.m. and, after getting their bearings by the white
metal fence and finding only one other birder there, got rather distant
views of the Caracara sitting in the trees in the woods to the south. At
one point it flew and they got to see its wing pattern and face. Just
after 7:00 p.m. they reported that it flew over the trees and out of
sight to the east. There is an opossum carcass in the field here that it
had been feeding on.

Because there are several locations to check it is hoped that searchers
will communicate info positive and negative by posting and exchanging
phone numbers.

Good luck to all going for it tomorrow.

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots wiki: State, Counties & Locations Updated

2015-04-11 Thread Ben Cacace
The county and location pages have been updated. Updates involve # of
species and color codings based on species # plus updating the 2015 periods
on the tables to display the Month: Apr./2015 and the two month period
Mar.-Apr./2015.

For the following county pages links to the Top 10 locations appear at the
top of the list: Cayuga, Erie, Monroe, Niagara, Orange, Oswego, Seneca,
Tompkins, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Nassau,
Suffolk and Westchester Counties. For New York County (Borough of
Manhattan) all hotspots have location pages.

All county and location pages have a table showing the months, seasons and
several time frames for the current year. Clicking any of these will bring
up a complete list of species and other taxa with bar charts representing
abundance. To see a list of species for all periods click the location name
above the months i.e. New York State (466 spp.).

After bringing up a bar chart list you'll see a MAP button to the right of
each species which will display a map of the latest sightings. Red icons
show sightings within the past 30 days. Click on the icons to see who
reported the species then click on 'Checklist' to view their full list.

Tip: If you want to see which species have been recently added to any of
the hotspot locations, county lists or for New York State you can choose
'Overview' on the 'Explore a location' line near the top of each page. Then
click on 'First Seen' under the number of species and checklists to view
the most recent additions. These columns can be sorted by clicking on the
column heading.

Check out 'My Location Life List', 'My County Life List' and 'My State Life
List' links. There are no direct links on eBird to bring up 'My Location
Life List'.

Click 'Overview' on any of the pages to bring up a sortable list of all
species along with the latest checklists submitted and a list of the Top
eBirders.

Click on 'Directions' to bring up a Google Map page. By clicking
'Directions' on Google Maps then 'Transit' it will plot a route. Click
'More Options and Times' and you can refine your search. This works with
'Driving' and 'Walking' also.

[nysbirds-l] Valley Stream Yellow-throated Warbler

2015-04-11 Thread TESSA1
This long staying and very cooporative bird is still frequenting its
previously described location. When I had it today at 2:30PM (rather easily),
it
was foraging in a red maple at the NE corner of A.J. Hendrickson Park. Its
soft call notes heard a few minutes before connecting visually, although
some of its call notes can sound much sharper. It then returned to its
favorite spot at the south end of Valley Stream SP around the bulkheads where
the 2 streams meet, giving point blank views.

A shared location (hotspot) covering 'River Rd., Montgomery' in Orange

This should become available within the next 12 hours on eBird.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons

— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] ADMIN: Photos and Attachments

2015-04-11 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Just a friendly reminder:

Please do NOT send attachments to NYSbirds-L. Doing so can cause delays in
delivery of additional messages to all subscribers, because of the additional
unnecessary workload placed upon servers. As an example, an attachment of file
size 225kb may seem quite reasonably small to send to a friend, family member,
or colleague; however, sending that to the eList via servers to all subscribers
of NYSbirds-L results in more than a quarter of a gigabyte of data being pushed
through the servers for that single message.

Attachments are also an effective means of sharing viruses or other malware.

Please take the additional time to upload attachments and pictures somewhere
else (i.e., Flickr, Picasa, etc.) and then post the URL, along with a clear
explanation of what the link is for. If you receive an email with a link in the
body, but without a clear explanation, don’t click on the link – that could be
malware. If you are ever unsure, consider responding to the sender and ask them
what the link is for.

Everyone would like timely reports of birds sightings (and clean computers), so
let’s all try to do our best to minimize unnecessary attachments that could
slow down the responsiveness of the eList servers.

Thanks and good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Good Morning,

Those trying for the Caracara in Orange County today should know that the
bird did seem to be effected by the presence of the group yesterday. Although
the bird was not approached yesterday at any close distance, through it's
moving about and the pursuit that followed, it was apparent that the bird
requires a WIDE berth. My suggestion would be to stay in the area of the farm
parking lot, that was graciously offered up by the owners, so long as vehicles
remained on FIRM ground. Please, respect these farmers, who were very kind to
all yesterday and please respect the bird. The lot is on the East side of the
road.

Good luck to all. Positive and negative results welcomed.

Re: [nysbirds-l] CRESTED CARACARA - Montgomery, NY (Curt McDermott)

2015-04-11 Thread Curt McDermott
Had a report of the bird being seen over the center of Walden, which is just
east of the location where it was seen yesterday. I would also suggest
checking Daisy Ln., which is just north of yesterday's location on River Rd.
Sighting was at approx. 9:30am today.

[nysbirds-l] New eBird Hotspot - River Rd., Montgomery

2015-04-11 Thread Ben Cacace
A shared location (hotspot) covering 'River Rd., Montgomery' in Orange
County was just created for the Crested Caracara reports.

This should become available within the next 12 hours on eBird.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to My eBird select Manage My Locations in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click Show All to see all locations on one
page
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter P under Type*) by
clicking Edit on the right side of the line
— Select the Merge button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for Delete after merging

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

it's moving about and the pursuit that followed, it was apparent that the
bird requires a WIDE berth. My suggestion would be to stay in the area of
the farm parking lot, that was graciously offered up by the owners, so long
as vehicles remained on FIRM ground. Please, respect these farmers, who were
very kind to all yesterday and please respect the bird. The lot is on the
 East side of the road.
Good luck to all. Positive and negative results welcomed.

 Good Birding,
 Curt McDermott

Had a report of the bird being seen over the center of Walden, which is just
east of the location where it was seen yesterday. I would also suggest
checking Daisy Ln., which is just north of yesterday's location on River Rd.
Sighting was at approx. 9:30am today.

[nysbirds-l] Valley Stream Yellow-throated Warbler

2015-04-11 Thread TESSA1
This long staying and very cooporative bird is still frequenting its
previously described location. When I had it today at 2:30PM (rather easily),
it
was foraging in a red maple at the NE corner of A.J. Hendrickson Park. Its
soft call notes heard a few minutes before connecting visually, although
some of its call notes can sound much sharper. It then returned to its
favorite spot at the south end of Valley Stream SP around the bulkheads where
the 2 streams meet, giving point blank views.

clicking Edit on the right side of the line
— Select the Merge button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots wiki: State, Counties Locations Updated

John, looked up the bird on his smart phone and said, Oh yeah, it's been
hanging around here for at least a week.

Those going tomorrow might want to return John's hospitality; he has fresh
coffee and hot grill food for sale.

On the way back, I stopped off at Gravesend Bay (and many other points right
on the Belt Parkway) and quickly found the continuing Glaucous Gull flying
around.

[nysbirds-l] It Takes a Village

4) Bob Proniewych for being Top Gun out of a group of ~ 15 of us, by
calling out the Caracara in a maze ot trees, after we had been at spot #2
for some time, constantly checking out the sky, the trees, the dead possum,
and anything that moved !
5) The owner of the golf course for his hospitality.

This bird, of course was a state bird for me, and as I went to enter it in
my Birding Bible, was a bit surprised to find the date of my first ever
C/C (aka Audubon's Caracara) to be just a day off, on 4/12/97. Even though
today's weather was delightful, I'm sure it was well below the earlier
date, which occurred in Tambor, on the west coast of Costa Rica !

Cheers,
Bob
