[nysbirds-l] Hunter's Garden

2015-05-06 Thread robert adamo
This morning I lead an ELIAS bird walk at the above. There were 9 of us
who, at 0700, wondered what the day would bring (bird & weather wise) due
to it's raining lightly, as we headed into this NYSDEC property.

While the rain did stop, it stayed a gray/ dull day, with the bird
counting slow, although we did get a number of "bright" species, which kept
the morning moving. Among them were: a # of Scarlet Tanagers & Baltimore
Orioles; 1, possibly 2 Blackburnian Warblers; 2 N. Parulas and
Great-crested Flycatcher. Other species seen were: E.Tohwee; House Wren;
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Chipping Sparrow.

We then decided to see if the Bald Hill Area (also w/s RT. 51, ~ 1/2 mile
to the north) was busier than H.G., because of it's larger wet area - short
answer being no. Pine Warbler was the lone addition to the day's tally.

Cheers,
Bob.

Hi all,

I am sorry for the brief emails earlier. I was on a rock climbing trip with
almost no time to post. Anyway, there were a lot of warblers at the
Shawangunks ridge, Mohonk Preserve, near New Paltz, NY today. The Cerulean
Warbler was present from 10am until 6:15pm at least. It was near the
junction of the East Trapps Connector Trail and Undercliff Road. This is
area is near the hairpin turn on the upper part of the East Trapps
Connector Trail that's called the "stairmaster". The Kentucky Warbler was
no more than 0.5 mile northeast from the same junction along Undercliff
Road. Full list here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23279706

[nysbirds-l] ADMIN: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!

2015-05-06 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
I know how easy it is to fire off an email from smartphones, but **PLEASE**
take that extra minute to type out more specifically WHERE a bird sighting
occurred. Some of these iPhone/Android/Smartphone messages are coming through
with incredibly cryptic location information, or none at all.

This eList has a subscribership of 1,194 email addresses from areas all over
New York State and the Northeast (and elsewhere), and there are countless
**hundreds** of additional readers who glean information from various online
web archives of these postings.

Think about how you would describe the location to a birder visiting your area.

Thanks in advance for taking that extra minute and good birding!!

Sincerely,

The Kentucky Warbler in Prospect Park was relocated this morning by Bobbi
Manion on the wood chip path between the Butterfly Meadow leading down to
staircase towards the Maryland Monument.
The bird was reported as chipping occasionally, but did not sing.
For those new to the park, the Butterfly Meadow is at the top of Lookout
Hill in the SW section of the park. This sighting is a stone's throw from
yesterday's.

Cheers,
