2016-03-06 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC
Sunday March 6, 2016
OBS: Robert DeCandido, Deborah Allen, m.ob. on bird walk

I circled the Reservoir between 8 & 9 am before the bird walk finding the
following:

Small white-cheeked Goose with brown wash on chinstrap continues
Canada Goose - around 75
American Black Duck x Mallard - 2, one with a bit of white in the tail, the
other with some green on the head
Mallard - around 100
Northern Shoveler - 168
Bufflehead - 8 (4 males & 4 females)
Hooded Merganser - 2 (male & female)
Red-breasted Merganser - first-cycle or female
Ruddy Duck - 90
Double-crested Cormorant - immature
American Coot - 3
Very few gulls: Ring-billed Gull (around 40), Herring Gull (around 25) and 2
Great Black-backed Gulls
European Starling - imitating a Song Sparrow

By the time we returned to the Reservoir with the group the number of Great
Black-backed Gulls had increased to nine, and another Double-crested Cormorant
(adult) had flown in.
--
Turkey Vulture - spotted by Jeff Ward from the Maintenance Field & another
(Bob) at the Reservoir
Mourning Dove - several
Red-bellied Woodpecker - various locations
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - Cedar Hill before walk (Bob)
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker - Pinetum (Bruno B.)
American Crow - flock of 6 flying over the feeders & calling
Black-capped Chickadee - feeders & elsewhere
Tufted Titmouse - feeders
White-breasted Nuthatch - various locations
Brown Creeper - feeders
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - feeders (spotted by R. Montgomerie & T. Birkhead)
Hermit Thrush - spotted by Jeff W. as we were leaving the park at 5th Ave. &
76th Street
American Robin - not many
Fox Sparrow - feeders
Song Sparrow - feeders & elsewhere
White-throated Sparrow - many
Dark-eyed Junco - feeders (spotted by R. Montgomerie & T. Birkhead)
Red-winged Blackbird - the Oven
Common Grackle - around 40 at feeders & elsewhere
Brown-headed Cowbird - 3 males at the feeders (Jeff Ward)
House Finch - 2 males at feeders - one singing
American Goldfinch - 18 at feeders

--
I was lucky enough to see the Glaucous Gull at the Reservoir pointed out to me
by Jeff Nulle & Alan Messer at 11:43. The bird was sitting on the water fairly
close to some Herring Gulls for a nice size comparison, but departed shortly
thereafter.

Some of us went back to the Reservoir after lunch to try for the Glaucous Gull
again, but we weren't able to find it. We did get very nice looks at the
Red-breasted Merganser, and Miriam Rakowski added a Pied-billed Grebe to the
day's list of birds.
--
Wolfgang Demisch reported a Red-shouldered Hawk near Greywacke Arch on Saturday
(March 5).

Jean Shum reported that Pale Male (Red-tailed Hawk) and his mate had been
mating on the Carlyle Hotel.

I'm quite sure I've left out something,

Deb Allen

P. S. Happy Birthday to Sarah M. Elliott who turned 86 today.

2016-03-06 Thread tomster101

The previously reported red necked grebes continued  at Fort Pond Bay until the
skeet shooters returned. They swam out of the bay.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NY, NY: GLAUCOUS GULL - Gone Missing Now

2016-03-06 Thread Anders Peltomaa
The big white monster Gull we saw earlier has now gone missing.

Was hoping to share it with more birders, but alas. Good luck if you try
for it. Maybe it will return?

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org Shared Location - Fort Wadsworth

2016-03-06 Thread Ben Cacace
A marker was created for Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. The hotspot
should be available within 12 hours.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.
