[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 11/2, & addendum, corrigendum

2016-11-02 Thread Thomas Fiore
'midnight miracle' Cubs!
  -
A Yellow-breasted Chat was observed by multiple observers in the
location previously-recently noted in Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y.
City) on Wednesday, 2nd November, 2016.

---
I inadvertently left out Purple Finch from the birds seen on Wed.,
11/2, at Marshlands Conservancy, Rye, Westchester County, which
Malcolm Morris spotted and I got to see as well, near the end of our
visit to the preserve.

- - - - - - - - - - -
On a real-worId note, and related to a post I placed to this list, on
Sunday, October 30th, at 9:56 (that's NINE-fifty-six) a.m. that
morning, Eastern Daylight Time, for sightings in Central Park, those
for whom it's a concern may wish to understand, and know, that
archived messages on the site run by the ABA's "Birding News" (as one
example of one birding-lists web-archive) do not show Eastern Daylight
Time, and all posts that appear there now from this time-zone will
have appeared "AS IF" the time was one hour earlier than it actually
was posted - (some posts on web-archived may have small, additional,
lag-times, which could be of just a minute, or very occasionally
longer.)

Anyone may test this for themselves by, after having made a post to
NYS Birds, see what time-stamp the ABA "Birding News" website gives
your own post -

Further, checking the post I made for 11/2, where Malcolm Morris & I
departed Rye, NY via automobile at 2:30 PM (or a few minutes
thereafter), see the time-stamp placed on this (temp-) archived report
(beIow Iink) to NYSBirds, the original report made from my residence
on the West Side of Manhattan, which, if accurate for the time of day
in the east, this day, would suggest that we made the journey by auto
from Rye, NY to Manhattan's west side, in just 13 minutes - I suppose
do-able had we had the roads fully-cleared for us by state and city
police all the way home, & if Mr. Morris had instead of a standard
auto brought out his FormuIa One race car, and zipped us across the
counties of Westchester & the Bronx, into mid-Manhattan in what wouId
be a near-quaIifying time for a gran prix event, so it seems... When
adjusted to actual time, for this time zone on this day, the true time
of this post (here below-linked) being 3:47 PM, is correct.

http://birding.aba.org/message.php?mesid=1198227=NY01=New%20York

Further concerns may be addressed to me by direct email message, or in
person, thanks.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher/Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Sean Sime
The previously reported Ash-throated Flycatcher was present and showing
well for a party of one from 2-3pm in the field west of Wolfe's Pond Park
along the Raritan Bay shoreline.
While I was there the bird worked back and forth on the beach side of the
rock break wall, often perching low and out of view. It actively fed and I
could hear it's bill "clapping" often. It was also "pipping" frequently.
Great find by Mike Shanley and many thanks to Isaac and others for status
updates and detailed directions.

I uploaded a few images to a Flickr gallery for anyone interested.

[nysbirds-l] Valley Stream Pink-footed Goose - YES

2016-11-02 Thread Timothy Healy
The Pink-foot was still being seen on the eastern shoreline of the lake at
Hendrickson Park this evening. We departed at about 5:35 as the sun was
getting low, and the goose was happily feeding alongside its Canadian
brethren. It seemed more alert and active than many reports from yesterday
suggested, moving anxiously away from joggers and briefly pausing to eye
observers when it realized it was being watched. It even interacted
semi-aggressively with Canadas who invaded its personal space as it was
swimming. We kept a respectful distance from the bird as it grazed, taking
care not to disturb our welcome guest. The flocks of geese are clearly
moving around: my dad stopped by around midday and reported that he and an
unknown birder from the city found no sign of it, but it has been seen
throughout the morning and afternoon. Where they are disappearing to when
they are not at the lake is a mystery, but there are plenty of other
options for foraging and resting nearby.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] NO on Virginia's W., Marshlands Cons., Rye, Westchester Co. 11/2

2016-11-02 Thread Thomas Fiore

Marshlands Conservancy, Rye, Westchester County, NY
Wednesday, November 2, 2016:

Malcolm Morris & myself enjoyed an extended visit to the above site,
seeking the Virginia's Warbler found the day before there, along with
more than a dozen other birders, some lingering from the early morning
& some arriving a bit later -

No one as far as we heard had seen even a potential candidate for the
desired warbler species, and those departing who'd been there early
also said the same.

However - there is vast habitat, & certainly the rare vagrant might
still be in the fields or in the area there - we followed many small
flocks consisting especially of chickadees, titmice, myrtle warblers,
and ruby-crowned kinglets, as well as some sparrows and of course
other typical November field & woods birds, & tried to scan through
all smaller birds in the area, but - it is a big area wIth very tall
un-mowed vegetation.

We chose to depart the preserve by about 2:30 p.m. - and thanks to all
who may update status, positive or not.

good luck to any who continue to seek this excellent bird at this nice
location!

[nysbirds-l] Ash throats update on Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Isaac Grant
Bird is ranging widely. It left the Wolfes pond side of the path and flew
across to the field on the other side where Mike Shanley originally found it.
Bird is currently feeding on the far edge of the field in some trees that
border Raritan Bay. The point is it's roaming over a large area so some effort
will be needed to find it. To access the field follow the same path at the end
of Holton Avenue and you will see two concrete barriers on your right. Cross
over the barriers and into the field.

[nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler- NO

2016-11-02 Thread Dawn Hannay
There are several people here at the Marshland's Conservancy in Rye searching
for the previously seen Virginia's Warbler. There have been no sightings today,
but the potential habitat is vast and the bird was very elusive.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher yes on Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Isaac Grant
Continuing bird found late last evening by Michael Shanley. Bird has changed
locations a bit. Is now being seen at the entrance to Wolfes Pond. Go to end of
Holton Ana take oath through bushes. When it opens up go 50 feet left and then
look back towards where you parked. It's feeding in an open area before you get
to pond. Staying low for long periods as is typical. Also calling.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Andrew Baksh
I don't believe this information was posted to the list serves, so I am passing
it on.

Michael Shanley reported on FB NY Birders that he found an Ash-throated
Flycatcher late this afternoon in a field at the foot of Holton Ave. on the
south shore of Staten Island (Richmond Co.). The location is adjacent to
Wolfe's Pond Park.
