[nysbirds-l] Eastern L.I. Audubon Society field trip to Rocky Point DEC Property

2018-05-01 Thread robert adamo
Each year ELIAS schedules a number of field trips during the month of May.
This year we have 10 set up, with today being the first. It was a fine day
weather wise, but "form" held forth re: the birds! We don't get the early
influx of species, as do our cousins up west, coming up with just 15
species. Our most notable bird was C. Raven, the 2nd year in a row for this
location. We did get 5 species of warblers, namely Yellow-rumped, Palm,
Black & White, Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush. All 8 "trippers" were
glad to be out and about...let the "fallouts" begin !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker in Yonkers

2018-05-01 Thread Andrew Block
This morning I had a Pileated Woodpecker flying fairly high across Central Park
Ave. from the Barnes and Noble side to the opposite side and land in a dead
tree.  A first for that area.  Kind of an unusual place to see them.  Good to
know they're around there.

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret Relocated Liberty @ Liberty Marsh (NY)

2018-05-01 Thread sophiesaid
The previously reported Cattle Egret reported by Jim Hayes this morning has
been relocated tonight.
It flew in from the south, headed north over the Oil City Rd Liberty Loop
platform and landed in the field by the hunting platform.
It then circled back over the platform, and landed (in NY), east of the
platform. It was last seen flying east over the treeline.
Other NY portion of refuge notables: Two American Bittern seen in flight (one
landed east of platform and was in the same scope frame
as the Cattle Egret), and Sora calling. Also seen: snipe, and both yellowlegs.

[nysbirds-l] Radar this morning

2018-05-01 Thread Gus Keri
This morning, there is a lot of radar activity over NYC.

https://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/northeast_loop.php

The green color suggests a lot a lot of birds landing. I wonder if it also mean
a lot of birds taking off like Brants.
