[nysbirds-l] Stone Bridge Nighthawk Watch - Setauket
After several days of little to no action presumably due to the inclement weather, the nighthawks arrived today with 306 birds being counted. This total represents the second highest total recorded to date, eclipsed by the 573-bird day last September 8th. [nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat, Jones Beach, Nassau County
I just found a Yellow-breasted Chat in the brush north of the road and west of the Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach. It was along the western edge of a somewhat open bowl, observed at these coordinates: (40.5886626,-73.5587467). The bird appeared while I was pishing for warblers, dropping out of sight after investigating the noise. [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC - Y.-br. Chat 9/10
Monday, 10 September, 2018 - A Yellow-breasted Chat appeared in Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City), seen at 3 p.m. on the southern edge of the Ramble / Lake edge (sometimes locally called the “riviera”) in thick shrubs near the very large boulders there, & then went unseen by me, in the nearly 1 hour I took hoping to grab a photo. At that hour, rain had let up, bringing more tourists & etc. quickly in & thru the park, including near where the chat had popped up. For 10 seconds, a brilliant view, on top of a poke berry bush, then in typical migrant-chat fashion, not even another glimpse. This area is a bit east of the Bow Bridge, perhaps 12+ yards east. One other nice find (not mine!) was a Connecticut Warbler, in N.Y. County, but on Governor’s Island, on Saturday 9/8, found by Gabriel Willow; as far as I’m aware, it did not turn up again for other birders in following days. The report (into eBird) was from the Nolan Park sector of the island. Further reports for the past several days, later or next day; there has been nice diversity, if not enormous numbers (of most species) for Central Park, in the recent rainy and/or windy weather. Rain & storm-birding can be interesting… Tom Fiore manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Marbled Godwit, Jones Beach, Nassau County
Yesterday’s Hudsonians are today replaced by a Marbled Godwit feeding alongside American Oystercatchers and “Western” Willets at the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station sandbar. On the topic of overnight turnover, my patch high count of 43 Lesser Black-backed Gulls in the WE2 lots yesterday afternoon has dwindled to just 9 birds this morning.
