Re: [nysbirds-l] Senate vote on 1081 Feral Cats

2015-06-26 Thread Bert Harris
Is there a Facebook group that opposes this? I couldn't find one after a
quick look. It would be good to get the message out on social media.

Thanks,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Cerulean warbler gunks

2015-05-06 Thread Bert Harris
Hi all,

I am sorry for the brief emails earlier. I was on a rock climbing trip with
almost no time to post. Anyway, there were a lot of warblers at the
Shawangunks ridge, Mohonk Preserve, near New Paltz, NY today. The Cerulean
Warbler was present from 10am until 6:15pm at least. It was near the
junction of the East Trapps Connector Trail and Undercliff Road. This is
area is near the hairpin turn on the upper part of the East Trapps
Connector Trail that's called the "stairmaster". The Kentucky Warbler was
no more than 0.5 mile northeast from the same junction along Undercliff
Road. Full list here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23279706

We will be heading up on Wednesday and would like to look for the ducks,

Late this afternoon, I took a drive to the Essex Ferry Dock on Lake
Champlain. About 5 to 10 minutes before the ferry arrived, I found the
male Tufted Duck among hundreds of other waterfowl. I took a number of
photos before the birds flushed as the ferry came in. The birds came back
after the ferry departed and I took a few more photos of the Tufted Duck
before my hands went completely numb! There were also 2 female Long-tailed
Ducks. I didn't spot the male Barrow's Goldeneye today. I met two very
nice birders from Vermont who came over on the ferry to observed
waterfowl. They said there were quite a few birds on the VT side also -
including Bufflehead, which were not on the NY side this afternoon. I took
80 photos of the Tufted Duck and posted 14 of them to my Facebook page at:

[nysbirds-l] Mourning Warbler, Catskills

2013-06-30 Thread Bert Harris
Hi all,

We were hoping to look for breeding Mourning Warblers as close as possible
to New Jersey. Does anyone know of a reliable spot in the Catskills or
another area?

Thanks!
Bert Harris, Princeton, NJ

Sorry I forgot to say that no cars are allowed in the cedar marina parking lot.
We asked permission from one of the construction workers before entering the

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon-NO

2013-02-25 Thread Bert Harris
Hi all,

There were lots of people looking for the Gyrfalcon at Gilgo today but no
one that I met had a confirmed sighting. At one point we saw three large,
very distant, falcons in flight and one was obviously larger than the
others. The larger bird took off from the beach of one of the distant
islands that can be seen from the west end of the Gilgo Beach Inn parking
lot. Apparently the Gyr perched in the same spot yesterday after killing a
duck. The larger bird was being harassed by one of the smaller ones. We were
leaning towards Gyr but we thought that the size difference could
alternatively be attributed to a large female peregrine. The birds were so
far away that we could not be sure. Bring a Celestron!

The osprey platforms and channel markers east and west of the Gilgo Beach
Inn parking lot seem to be good places to look, but they only hosted
peregrines for us.

Does anyone have a positive report to share? It would be great to get some
more info out there so that people driving from far afield may have a
better chance of success.

Thanks,
Bert Harris, Princeton, NJ
