Re: [nysbirds-l] Cerulean warbler gunks
Hi all, I am sorry for the brief emails earlier. I was on a rock climbing trip with almost no time to post. Anyway, there were a lot of warblers at the Shawangunks ridge, Mohonk Preserve, near New Paltz, NY today. The Cerulean Warbler was present from 10am until 6:15pm at least. It was near the junction of the East Trapps Connector Trail and Undercliff Road. This is area is near the hairpin turn on the upper part of the East Trapps Connector Trail that's called the "stairmaster". The Kentucky Warbler was no more than 0.5 mile northeast from the same junction along Undercliff Road. Re:[nysbirds-l] Gyr-YES
Sorry I forgot to say that no cars are allowed in the cedar marina parking lot. We asked permission from one of the construction workers before entering the parking lot. [nysbirds-l] Gyr-YES
We had excellent looks at the bird from the Cedar Beach Marina parking lot at 2 pm. It was perched on the leftmost of three junipers pretty much straight out from the parking lot, perhaps a half mile away. It hung around for about 15 minutes, was harassed by a harrier, and then flew to the west. We could not relocate the bird. [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon-NO
Hi all, There were lots of people looking for the Gyrfalcon at Gilgo today but no one that I met had a confirmed sighting. At one point we saw three large, very distant, falcons in flight and one was obviously larger than the others. The larger bird took off from the beach of one of the distant islands that can be seen from the west end of the Gilgo Beach Inn parking lot. Apparently the Gyr perched in the same spot yesterday after killing a duck. The larger bird was being harassed by one of the smaller ones. We were leaning towards Gyr but we thought that the size difference could alternatively be attributed to a large female peregrine. The birds were so far away that we could not be sure. Bring a Celestron! The osprey platforms and channel markers east and west of the Gilgo Beach Inn parking lot seem to be good places to look, but they only hosted peregrines for us. Does anyone have a positive report to share? It would be great to get some more info out there so that people driving from far afield may have a better chance of success.
