[nysbirds-l] A note on Peter Matthiessen of Sagaponack, L.I.
Hello, I just wanted to mention the passing of Peter Matthiessen, eastern Long Island author, naturalist, environmentalist. Peter lived many years in a house close to Sagg Pond,[ Sagaponack], and the oceans doorstep. A spot many of us in the birding community are very familiar with. Of all the many great nature writers we have, perhaps no one wrote as eloquently of this world's wildlife or as insightfully of their surroundings. His,"Shorebirds of North America", is truly a classic in the field and a work of great beauty. He wrote of the Himalayas and a search for the elusive Snow Leopard in ,"The Snow Leopard" and of the Arctic Skua in ,"End of the Earth, A Voyage to Antarctica", and the world's Cranes in," The Birds of Heaven, Travels with Cranes". His writings have been an life long inspiration to me and I'm sure many others. [nysbirds-l] An Osprey Sighting, Riverhead, Long Island
Hello Everyone, My cousin Deb Robertaccio of Hampton Bays has phoned to tell of seeing her first Osprey yesterday at 4:45 pm. She was crossing the overpass of the Peconic River just south of Indian Island Golf Course when the bird flew by. Good March Birding to All,Carl Starace , Longmont, Colorado p.s. miss my birding compatriots on L.I. , also the myriad coastal waterbirds that winter brings. Yesterday's highlight walking a trail at a place called Rabbit Mountain was being literally surrounded/stunned by Mountain Bluebirds, 26 in all. [nysbirds-l] COMMON REDPOLLS, CALVERTON, L.I., March 28th
Hello All,Kevin Nolan, Larry Migliore and I found the flock of 35+ Common Redpolls this morning in the large field,[north side of road], along 25a, a short distance west of Hulse Landing Road,[where the Mountain Bluebird had been seen winters ago]. Yesterday Kevin Nolan had watched this flock atop the snow fence. But unfortunately, this morning Town employees had rolled up all of that fence. We were able to put scopes on the birds just once in the treetops along the south side of the road. The flock was actively feeding and moving about this same field that Derek Rogers found them in some days ago. Also present in the area were a pair of Northern Harrier, 4 Redtails, 3 Turkey Vultures and several Killdeer. A real surprise was a Peregrine that stooped on a flock of mallards that were lazing in shallows well out into same field. It missed the ducks, and moments later came to earth next to a Falconer who had been hidden from our view. This morning there were 14 American Oystercatchers in the vicinity of Ponquogue Bridge,Hampton Bays. [nysbirds-l] Montauk Point/ Hook Pond Birds, Monday , Feb. 26th, 2013
Hello All,What a pleasure it is to have a birding day with temps in the forties with the lightest of winds. Last Sunday I had led an Audubon walk that included Montauk. The measured windchill happened to be 1 degree. The five of us exited the cars that day at Lazy Point to try for the Snowy Owl and nearly got blown over to the Walking Dunes. Today Dick Belanger and I spent some time by the Lighthouse. There were more Common Eider,[200+], than any of the Scoters around. We had a single Northern Gannet flyby and a Red Necked Grebe on the southside with 20 Horned Grebe. The wind was just strong enough to smooth the faces of the breakers that were peaking up in front of the lighthouse. Surfers were jazzed. Ditch Plains had many surfers but few waterbirds. We found the Barrows Goldeneye pair with close to 40 Common Goldeneye from the beach at South Lake Drive. Did'nt try for the Snowy. At Hook Pond in East Hampton we noticed the Common Mergansers had returned. There were 21 birds, eighteen of them males. Nice day out east.Good Late February Birding, Carl Starace -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] SHINNECOCK INLET/ DUNE ROAD, L.I. BIRDS, DEC. 24th
Hi All,Dick Belanger and I birded the Southampton side of Dune Road east to Shinnecock Inlet. The Hampton Bays side of the Inlet continues to be for all intents and birding purposes, off limits due to the ongoing dredge work there. We had a Crossbill flock,[ 15 Whitewinged], along the road a quarter mile from the Inlet. At the parking area shoreline we found 7 Dunlin with a few Sanderling. On the long sandbar within the bay there was a group of close to 200 Sanderling and 38 Common Eider. Across the inlet on the west jetty there were 2 feeding Purple Sandpiper and 2 Great Cormorant on the tower directly above them. Good numbers of gulls are gathering at the torrent of water and sand exiting the dredge pipe at the shore further west. There were 25 Bonaparte Gulls in the breakers there. Small numbers of Horned Grebes were evident on both bay and ocean. [nysbirds-l] Calverton, Long Island, Grassland Birds, Dec. 20th
Hi, Kevin Nolan and I spent part of this morning searching the various farm fields of Calverton/Baiting Hollow. The largest flock, mainly Horned Lark and numbering well over 2 hundred birds were circling a field between Middle and Youngs Avenues. We found a second feeding flock of 135 Horned Lark stretched along the east side of Hulse Landing Road,[ former Mountain Bluebird spot]. Then we had nice close looks at a group of 50+ American Pipits by the Haunted House on Old Country Road. We looked at the transitional field across Old Country Rd. from Hulse Landing and had 3 Eastern Meadowlark there. Along the tree line at the northern boundary of that Hulse Landing field were over a dozen White Crowned Sparrow. There were 6 Redtailed Hawk, 2 Harrier and an American Kestral at large. [nysbirds-l] TUFTED DUCK PAIR, Huntington Harbor, Dec. 18th, 2012
Hi, Dick Belanger went for the male Tufted Duck this morning. He arrived at the harbor at 10am and found the male with a female directly across from Tutto Pazzo Restaurant. The pair were just 100 feet off the dock and he watched them for over a half hour before a passing boat caused them to fly off towards the Sound. He said the female's head was rich brown and there was just the hint of white by the base of bill. Wish now I had gone with him when he had called early this morning. [nysbirds-l] Shinnecock and Tiana Beach, Dune Rd., Sunday, Dec. 2nd
Hi, A very quiet morning at Shinnecock Inlet. More bulldozers than birds around the jetties and no real movement of birds offshore .We found a lone Bonaparte Gull lolling with Ringbills on the sliver of sandbar at the inner bay. Down past Tiana parking lot by the summertime bars we were checking the pines and within 5 minutes had a swirl of Crossbills over our heads. There were well over a hundred and this flock contained both species. [nysbirds-l] PACIFIC LOON, East Moriches, Long Island, Monday, November 26th
Hello All.Dick Belanger had a Pacific Loon about 2:30 this afternoon off of Harts Cove in East Moriches. He scoped the bird for a good 20 minutes . Take Atlantic Ave. in the village south to Maple. Go left to the end. The bird was about 75 yards off . I recall not too many years past that Steve Biasetti came up with a Pacific Loon along this same stretch of shoreline and it stuck around quite a few days. [nysbirds-l] Smith Point, Long Island Birds, Oct. 16th
Hello All, This morning there was another fair sized movement of American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin along the barrier island. I arrived at 8am and spent a little over 3 hours on the upper deck of the Ranger Station. Goldfinch numbers were 1200+, Siskins about half that. I also had 34 American Kestral, 8 Merlin, 2 Coopers Hawk, a single Sharpshinned Hawk, 3 Northern Harrier,[a Grey Ghost passed about 150 yards off the beach], a flock of 36 Black Scoter, 9 Royal Tern, 22 Northern Gannet, and 50+ Tree Swallow. Yesterday morning there was literally no movement but one sighting made my day. I had stopped my truck to watch a Peregrine that was sitting on the pavement when another came charging across the lot about 3 ft. off the ground directly at the Ist bird. They both rose higher, talons up, and flew in chase mode towards the bay bridge, came back around in front of me again and then locked talons briefly, one hanging below the other. [nysbirds-l] Smith Point, L.I. Yellow Headed Blackbird this AM
Hello All. Sally Swain and I had a Yellow Headed Blackbird,[f], at the entrance to the ballfields by the Ranger Station amongst a flock of Brown Cowbirds that numbered close to one hundred as well as a FOS White Crowned Sparrow. Within the first hour we found our first Dickcissel atop a Jayco RV at the trailer site. New category! Then further east while hiking Burma Road we got a second perched Dickcissel. Later on I birded with Rich Kaskan and had a number of sizeable Pine Siskin flocks, Dark Eyed Junco's, Swamp, Chipping, White Throated, and Clay Colored,[3], Sparrows, a Brown Creeper, a male Northern Harrier, multitudes of GC Kinglets and an exquisite looking Bobolink by the parking field that Derek Rogers had spotted . [nysbirds-l] Pectoral Show Along Sound Avenue, Riverhead, Sept. 7th
Hello All, Dick Belanger and I checked the sod field just west of Route 105 early this morning and were thrilled to see so many Pectoral Sandpipers in evidence,[ sixteen]. They even outnumbered the Buffies,[ we found nine]. We also had a," first year," Peregrine that put down briefly a little to the east side of the field. It showed no intent on our flock. A single White rumped Sandpiper and a few Bairds and Semipalmated's rounded out the group. Bob Adamo soon arrived and Diana Teta and friend. The bulk of these birds were first in the extreme western corner of the big expanse. Then 2 different farm tractors appeared and that spread the birds across our whole view. They moved in ever closer to a very busy Sound Ave., but this allowed for superb viewing as we all stood on a slight rise across the road. We then drove south to the field at Eastport Manorville Rd., where we had 2 American Golden Plovers amongst a group of 38 Black Bellied Plover. Hello All, Sally Swain and I found a Prothonotary Warbler about 10:15 this morning along the west bank of Terrell River,[County Park], which is on the south side of Montauk Highway in East Moriches . The bird was actively feeding, moving from the reeds to branches of overhanging trees. We watched it for about 10 minutes. As we were returning to the main trail we saw Dick Belanger approaching and we all walked back to the river for more looks at the bird. If you go you'll want to take the trail that goes directly towards the bay which is just a few feet from the entrance off the dirt parking lot.Walk about 100 yards looking for the first trail on the left that meanders towards the river. [nysbirds-l] St. Patricks Day Glossy Ibis Trio and a Peregrine Kill, Terrell River County Park, East Moriches, L.I.
Hi All, Dick Belanger, Sally Swain and I birded the County Park this morning doing some muck walking to attain closer looks at the many ducks along the river. Just as we came out through the phragmites we watched a Peregrine Falcon come into view to our left cruising mid river. The many Ring Bills and GW Teals quickly scattered but the Peregrine dropped down on one of the Teals,[f] that had'nt reacted quick enough. It lifted the bird straight out of the water literally right in front of us and flew towards the far bank. It would have landed there but the flock of Ring Bills began harassing it and it continued on down towards the bay. We lost sight of it for a few minutes, then found it further along the river. It had chosen to sit on the bank eating its meal in peace. A second unexpected sighting was 3 Glossy Ibis feeding on the east side of the river. I checked through RBA's for Jersey on down the mid- Atlantic this afternoon for any Glossy I. sightings and picked up one of a single bird seen this week in Delaware. My own data over the years show Glossy Ibis on the East End coming in during the third week in April. We also had 2 Osprey, a Coopers Hawk and Ring Necked Pheasant.
[nysbirds-l] Orange Crowned and Pine Warbler, YESSSS , Patchogue Lake, Long Island, Tuesday, Feb. 28th
Hi All, Dick Belanger and I were doing a waterfowl run this morning from Eastport Pond, Terrell River Park,[ 50+ Green winged Teal and 2 Eastern Towhees], west to the Patchogue Lakes. That enormous,[4k+], flock of Scaup continues in Eastport. The waterfowl numbers at both Patchogue Lakes were way down. What caught our attention in the pines at the south end of the big lake were 3 Golden Crowned Kinglets accompanied by a single Orange Crowned and Pine Warbler. Quite possibly the same group reported by Doug and Seth yesterday. We also had 5 Pintail Duck at Robinson Pond on South Country Road in East Patchogue. Good Feb. [nysbirds-l] NO PFGoose, Birds further East, Feb. 23rd
Hi All, John McNeil and I tried around 9:30 this morning for the Pink Footed Goose at the ballfields with no luck.We then took a walk at Wertheim Refuge in Shirley and had 4 Killdeer out on the marsh. We later took a drive to Hampton Bays to look for the Ravens at the Water Tower by the railroad station. As we drove by the tower 2 Turkey Vultures sailed past.We then took the access road on the south side of the tracks and entered the facility.Out on the lawn were 2 Ravens hopping about.A lady in the office mentioned that nest building had begun,[second season].There was not much activity at the Inlet but as we neared Triton Lane further west we had superb looks at the Iceland Gull standing in a roadside ditch. [nysbirds-l] Shinnecock Inlet and Points East, Feb. 15th
Hello All, John McNeil,Dick Belanger and I started this mornings birding at the eastern side of Shinnecock Inlet after dipping on the Hampton Bays Water Tower Ravens. About one hundred yards off the easternmost jetty we had a resting flock of 9 Razorbill, also one Bonaparte Gull. There were many Red Throated Loons about and a handful of Horned Grebes. The sizeable,[for Shinnecock], flock of 200+ Common Eider were still in place in the inner bay by the inlet. We checked the various ponds south of Southampton Village for waterfowl.Lake Agawam held the most diversity with Scaup and Gadwall most common. We had 6 Northern Shoveler and 5 Redhead as well. Stopping on Murray Lane,[off of Little Plains Road], to view a large flock of Robin we found 4 Cedar Waxwing amongst them. At the Mill Pond by Watermill village's western end we counted 6 Black Crowned Night Heron in the trees along the northern end.We also had Belted Kingfisher's at four different locales.Good mid February Birding, Carl Starace -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue Beach, Long Island Birds, + DICKSISSEL, Sunday, Jan. 22nd
Hello All, I walked out to Moriches Inlet early this morning with Dick Belanger. We took the bay side and saw 2 Harrier, some small flocks of sitting C. Eider and little else. At the outer jetties we found close to 40 feeding Northern Gannets. On our beach side return we encountered a few BB Plover, 4 Horned Lark and 2 Savannah,"Ipswich", Sparrow working the high tide line. As we crested the dune by the parking area a Peregrine made a long sweep of the marsh.Returning home my partner Sally met me at the door with binocular in hand. She'd been watching a 1st winter female Dicksissel at our feeding station. This bird was seen with our resident White Throats, single Fox Sparrow and House Sparrows off and on for the rest of the afternoon. [nysbirds-l] Dune Road/ Eastport Pond, Long Island Birds Yesterday Afternoon.
Hello All, Congrats. to Dave Rankin,[and thanks to John Haas], for the terrific/amazing upstate find and photos of the Grey Crowned Rosy Finch!!! In eastern Suffolk as of yesterday afternoon the lone female Harlequin found by James Clinton and Mel Cowgill last Saturday was still present close in to the western side of the jetty on the west side of Shinnecock Inlet. The Common Eider raft,[near 200 birds], continues out in the bay inside the inlet along with some smaller groups of LT Duck. There were a fair number of RT Loon around but we only had a single Horned Grebe along that whole stretch.. Down towards East Quogue Kevin Nolan and I also found 2 Great Egrets close to bayside in the ditch along the dirt road by Triton Lane. Eastport Pond is loaded with waterfowl. Of note were 3 Redheads. Hello Everyone, There was a chill wind from the north for a change this morning on our final walk of this year. A lone Great Cormorant graced the jetty,no eider about, a few Long Tailed Duck, still no Horned Grebe down this way. A female Kestrel and 2 Harrier were scanning the marsh just west of Ponquogue Bridge. From a sand mound just before Tiana Beach we found 7 Pintail Duck,[real surprise for this side of bay], between 2 large groups of feeding Black Duck. A few,[6], Common Goldeneye have returned to the bayfront at Tiana proper. We then had a Great Egret at rest upon a duck blind on the way to Triton Lane. This was my second in 2 days,[Smith Point marina]. The abundant Bufflehead and Red Breasted Merganser flocks along this stretch were a pleasure to see. Hello Everyone, The N. Shrike has not been seen since Monday when Rob Bate found it just after 8 am. I and Derek Rogers have both tried several days during this week to relocate the bird . This morning I did have 52 Snow Buntings , 5 Horned Larks, 3 flyover American Pipits, a Sharpshinned Hawk and Northern Harrier. There was a steady run of mostly Red Throated Loon and lots of Gannets along the ocean. There are currently Snowy Owl sightings in Mass., Connecticut and New Jersey. Hello Everyone, Lively ocean today, thick with N. Gannets and Scoter flocks. We had a dozen Long Tails passing and a few more at rest on the bayside. Best bird was a bright Blue Headed Vireo along the ballfield fenceline. A lone sitting Merlin kept things quiet for a while, then the SC Junco flocks erupted from the hedgerows. Field and Chippings were with them.Early on we watched 20 Snow Buntings skim the primary dune,3 Horned Larks were also found in the big lot.No sign of the 7 Royal Terns I saw on Thursday.Good Autumn Birding, Carl Starace -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Eastport, L.I Sodfields Update, Sept, 9th ,2011.
Hello All,I met Dick Belanger on County Road 51 in Eastport around 8:30 this morning. He and Mary Laura Lamont had spotted a White rumped Sandpiper some minutes past on the biggest field east of the roadbed. For the next hour Dick and I searched the wandering flocks numbering close to 200 birds and came up with a second White rumped, a Baird's and a single American Golden Plover. The multitude were scared up twice. Once by a Sharp shinned Hawk and later by a not too interested Merlin. They're were also a few Least Sandpipers and Semipalmated Plovers among the much more numerous Black Bellies and Killdeers. Over west at the smaller field by Eastport Manorville Road there was zilch. [nysbirds-l] Cupsogue Beach, L.I. Update for Friday ,Sept. 2nd
Hello Everyone, A cool northeasterly wind greeted me this early morning at Cupsogue flats. There was a single Marbled Godwit way out on the long bar that starts just inside Moriches Inlet. I then looked east to a surprisingly empty bay front. I had'nt yet seen the 3 Whimbrel walking along the rise there within the shadows of the sea grass. They soon took flight swinging closer to the ocean dune line heading west towards Robert Moses S.P. The next open view of the flats revealed the 12 other Marbled Godwits of the flock we had seen 2 days past. Far out on the big flat I counted 7 juvenile Black Skimmers. The Red Knots,[20+] continue they're extended stay but I did not come up with any Black Terns today. I did have a total of 4 Stilt Sandpipers feeding alongside the Marbled Godwits and Western Willets,[5]. [nysbirds-l] Cupsogue Beach, L.I. Update, August 30th
Hello Everyone, I checked the County Road 51 sod fields early today with John MacNeil. Migrant numbers were down compared to yesterday. Our best bird was a Coopers Hawk perched on an irrigation pipe. The Cupsogue flats at mid afternoon proved to be more productive. Dick Belanger and I had a total of 14 Marbled Godwits present. Tern numbers were low, but we did pick up 2 Black Terns. Andy Murphy found a juvenile Yellow Crowned Night Heron at the westernmost tidal pond. There are still a few Red Knots out there and we had both Yellowlegs. As we were passing through the deeper channel to leave we all got nice looks at a Northern Harrier and a challenging Peregrine overhead.
