[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park Woodcock

2019-03-13 Thread Home
Last winter we had a woodcock sighting almost every week from November through
March, sometimes three after a snowstorm. This winter was quiet. We did have
some overwintering hearties - 2-3 Gray Catbirds, one Song Sparrow that clung to
the southwest corner. A small group of European Starlings didn’t fair as
well- I would find their carcasses in the shrubbery of Grace Plaza. I did get
to see the Brown Thrasher in the small park off 45th last month.

So recent reports of the woodcock’s return had me hopeful. This morning I had
my first for the year quietly sitting in the hedges of the Bryant Park Grill as
if patiently waiting for the crews to remove the remains of the ice rink.

Happy Spring Birding,
Alan

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park - Sora

2018-09-14 Thread Home
Spent yesterday evening and this morning looking for Connecticut Warbler with
no luck. Plenty of Common Yellowthroats and Ovenbirds and N Waterthrushes but
never the betwixt. However in the farthest southeast of the lawn I got a
couple of glimpses of what I believe is a Sora. Poor light and heavy
vegetation made the views difficult but size, silhouette and behavior were
positive and I would rule out anything rarer. Also in the same spot we had a
Sora a few years ago.

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park - American Woodcock

2018-03-02 Thread Home
Last year a Lincoln Sparrow overwintered and we had a major irruption of
American Woodcocks following the snow storm of March 14th 2017 and the fellows
kept showing up into the Christmas Bird Count.

Last week an errant lone cluster of daffodils bloomed by the central western
entrance while the rest of the bulbs were just pushing inches out of the
ground, and a small wire fence was built earlier this week to protect the first
bloom of blue crocuses just behind the ice rink restaurant. Still, other than
the slight increase in European Starlings, there has not been much to report,
typically, since the Christmas “Shoppes” of 2017 were taken down.

So it with pleasure (but also stormy trepidation) to report that harbinger of
Spring, the American Woodcock, has shown up today in Bryant Park in the
northwest corner by the dormant beehives, quite actively doing its drunken
forward-back waddle as no one is currently skating in this messy Nor’easter.

I am planning a report of this week later tonight but wanted to respond to a
post about last week’s American Woodcock not being refound. I could not find
it all this week either however today at 2pm I did find a Woodcock actively
feeding near the evergreen at the very northwest corner of the rink behind the
impromptu Santa seat platform.

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park Woodcocks

2017-03-30 Thread Home
At least 2 more American Woodcocks arrived at Bryant Park today (the third one
I saw may have been the first flying to a new location). They were at the
garden house in the southeast corner, the northwest corner side across from the
Patenque court, and the center ivy plot west of the birdbath.

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park

2017-03-01 Thread Home
In the past couple of weeks the number of Common White-throated Sparrows has
declined precipitously. No sign of Grey Catbirds. House Sparrows now rule.
The flower beds have been cleared and the daffodil stalks are just days away
from bursting. A lone European Starling struts around the bird bath. Typical
for March, the Song Sparrows are passing through. I counted three. I hadn't
seen the Lincoln Sparrow for almost a month but I found one, perhaps a
different fellow, more brown, but in a favorite spot - the northwest corner.
I'll keep watch for that harbinger of Spring, the aerodynamically challenged
American Woodcock.

Happy Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Bryant park

2016-10-28 Thread Home
Many more concession stands are opening this holiday season around the skating
rink. Interesting to see the effects on wintering birds in the park with more
food to scavenge or less habitat to forage. Currently the population of common
white throats is in full swing today with also a half dozen swampies, catbirds,
3 hermit thrushes, 2 common yellowthroats, and an ovenbird and Lincoln sparrow.
