Apologies, the pictures on facebook are from 8/3/17, although they were only

Park in Melville , which was already discussed and posted about. I thought it
was a more recent sighting in a new location and wanted to get the word out.

leading down to little Alley Pond, this time a male, probably a continuing

[nysbirds-l] HLSP Warning

2017-09-01 Thread Michael Zito
Hello, please be careful at Hempstead Lake State Park, Liz DiNapoli and myself
came across a stray brown dog and park police pulled up letting us know the dog
is very aggressive and possibly rabid. The dog took off with park police in
pursuit, but it was not captured. This is the north side of field 3. Happy
fall birding.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - Vesper Sparrow

2016-11-11 Thread Michael Zito
Vesper Sparrow at Jones Beach spotted by Rob Taylor and myself. I saw a few
people at the beach so wanted to let you guys know. Unfortunately the bird went
into the bushes because a car went by. We left the bird with two other birders
as we had to leave, south side of median, by itself. Will post pictures and
video later.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Environmental Issues

2016-10-24 Thread Michael Zito
Hello,
I hope it is OK to use the list to update fellow birders about some
environmental issues that can affect us.

1. If anyone has any suggestions as to how the $125 million in federal disaster
money can be used to restore Hempstead Lake State Park, please let me know. I
am in direct contact with someone on the board for the project.

2. Jones Beach Bike Path - I do not have any updates, if anyone contacted the
parks department please let me know, I have not had a chance to spend as much
time as I would of liked on this issue. If anyone has any suggestions how to go
about this issue, please let me know. Some have been very helpful.

3. Town of Hempstead Removal of Feral Cats - An issue came up where I found out
feral cat shelters are going to be constructed in the vicinity of the Hempstead
Plains. When I recommended removal of the cats, I was told TOH does not allow
this, only TNR.

For anyone thinking of trying for the whimbrel, a group of birders and myself
saw it fly off towards the third Wantagh Bridge about 30 minutes ago.

[nysbirds-l] Raven flyover - Valley Stream State Park

2016-04-28 Thread Michael Zito
This morning before heading to HLSP, I did a quick walk through of Valley
Stream. A single Raven flew over carrying sticks in its beak. It was being
harassed by two crows. With all the Raven sightings going on in this area, I
wonder if this is indicative of a pair trying to nest.
