"The access points to Janes Hill is from Reservoir Rd or High Hold Dr. (West

dead-end on Mount Misery Rd."

Hope this helps someone refind it.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Bicknell's and Hooded Warbler - Prospect Park Peninsula (correction)

2016-05-18 Thread Pat Palladino
Probable Bicknell's I should say. A single bird was present which directly
matched the photographs of others who heard it sing; however, there was no song
while I was there. There were at least seven other Gray-cheeks there as well.
As such, I'm still searching for my life Bicknell's Thrush.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach nightjar (Nassau County)

2016-05-16 Thread Pat Palladino
On Saturday, a few people caught a glimpse of a nightjar (apparent Chuck-wills
Widow) at Jones Beach West End. In an attempt to hear the Chuck, I headed down
there this evening and was greeted by a calling Whip-poor-will. It called for
about 15 minutes, then began its hunt, flying once through my headlight beams.
Early tomorrow morning may be a good opportunity to catch this bird before it
roosts for the day.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Robert Moses Golf Course (Suffolk) -yes

2015-10-13 Thread Pat Palladino
The bird is covering a lot of ground. It flew in from the east and was observed
feeding in the median at the parking lot exit. After about ten minutes it flew
west, landing in a pine at the turnaround. It then flew again and dropped down
in the vicinity of the picnic area adjacent to the golf course.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Western Sandpiper (Nassau)

2015-08-23 Thread Pat Palladino
A group of us checked the dried up ponds between West End 2 and the nature
center this afternoon. After a thorough search, no Baird's Sandpiper could be
located. However in the middle pond, among the Semipalmated Sandpipers and
Plovers, a Western Sandpiper was observed preening itself and then roosting

RE: [nysbirds-l] Bairds Brooklyn - missing mid-day (high tide)

2015-08-05 Thread Pat Palladino
I don't know what the tides were the last few days this bird was seen, but
several people, unfortunately including myself, unsuccessfully searched the
entire length of the beach for this bird for several hours mid-afternoon around
high tide. The bird was viewed (of course, by many others) both before and
after this tidal period. I would suggest to anyone searching for this bird in
the next few days, to review the tide charts to avoid high tide. However,
during this high tide period, the shoreline held a good number of shorebirds,
including one Pectoral Sandpiper.

The bird is in the same location right now. Can be viewed from the shoulder of
the roadway at the sign identifying the environmentally sensitive area.

the tide should now be just past high (Smith pt Bridge 1:24pm) so I suppose
the birds location and activity may have changed accordingly.

She is quite aware of how serious I am, when the bird in question, would be
an addition to my state list, and therefore, stepped aside and wished me good
 luck !

There were ~ 15 Ibises on the marsh when I arrived, all glossy. For ~ 1/2
hour, some of the them left the marsh, while others replaced them - the max
count getting to ~ 30-35 birds (combining both those on the ground and in the
air at the same time). The white-faced was not there upon arrival, but just
seemed to appear at ~ 1315. I managed to see all the field marks Shai
mentioned, with it's red legs and uniformly brown body (without any of the
breeding sheen of the adult glossy's) the marks that stood out the most,
allowing me to re-find the bird, after it went out of sight temporarily. I
also learned something today ! When I called Shai to share my joy with him,
as well as to thank him for the FOS (the S standing for state, in
addition to season, in this application, I let him know that I never saw
the red ankles', but did notice the red legs. He then, very gently, let me
know, that anatomically, the knobby part of the bird's leg is known as the
 ankle.

Cheers to Ken Sue for finding the bird (only the 2nd record for Suffolk
County) , and to Doug, who along with Shai, re-found it ! I've looked for
this species in NYS for quite awhile (the Grace Estate in E.Hampton and JBWR

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake Wilson's Warbler

He also reports a Greater White-fronted Goose seen at Gerry Pond Park
earlier. Good luck if you go and many thanks to Steve for the report.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike in Warwick, NY

2013-11-17 Thread Pat Palladino
For those interested, apparently there has been a Northern Shrike hanging
around for just over a week in the last 200-300 yards of low trees and shrubs
between Lower Wisner Road and Upper Wisner Road where those two roads meet at
Wisner Road in Warwick, NY. Today, I had a business meeting (yes, I am talking
about a meeting on Sunday) about 20 minutes from that location, so I decided to
swing by and take a look in the afternoon. After about a half hour, while
standing on Upper Wisner Road, I located the bird in the bushes between the two
roads about 250 yards from where those roads meet. Actually, what first got my
attention was its confrontation with an angry Mockingbird.

Resisting the urge to bird some of my local parks, I instead opted for some
 barrier beach birding.

My first and last stop was at Jones Beach where I birded with Tom Burke and
Gail Benson for most of the morning into the afternoon. The highlights were:

Adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, seen in the median just after the entrance to
the Coast Guard Station before it disappeared and was never re-found again as
 far as I know.

DICKCISSEL, skillfully picked out in flight by Tom Burke during the early
morning hours when the morning flight was cooking (the bird never put down
although at one point it appeared it might do so).

COMMON NIGHTHAWK, found by Dave Klauber as he almost stepped on it resting on
 the ground in the median.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, found by Tom Burke and Gail Benson, it hung around near
the 1st exit from the West End II parking lot providing a few of us with very
nice looks but then disappeared and was not seen again well into the
 afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA VIREO, one possibly two as Tom Burke and Gail Benson found one
near the same area as the Clay Colored and then Sam Janazzo, with Dave
Klauber might have had another or the same bird in the median across from
where Tom and Gail had theirs.

As far as warbler activity, one could easily be fooled if you drove the
circle and listened and looked for birds. You had to get out and do a little
ground and pound to get the birds but they were there feeding quietly in
the median although NOT in any significant numbers.

The warbler list includes but not limited to (since others may have seen
 additional species), the following.

 Black-throated Green
 Black-throated Blue
 Magnolia
 Northern Parula
 Ovenbird (seen by others)
 Black and White
 American Redstart
 Common yellowthroat
 Prairie
 Cape May
 Prairie
 Palm (both eastern and western)
 Pine
 Yellow
Northern Waterthrush (picked out in flight by Tom Burke by its chip note)

The presence of Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Least Flycatcher, Eastern
Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, Swainson's Thrush among the other regular birds
added to the overall bird activity in the area.

Sparrow activity was almost non existent save for the CLAY-COLORED, Song and
a few Savannah's, the latter found later in the afternoon.

As far as flight movement, there was a steady stream of Tree Swallows all
morning with small numbers of Barn Swallows interspersed in the mix. There
were small numbers of song birds in the mix as well but they mostly appeared
to keep on moving and did not put down.

No apparent movement of hawks detected and no shorebirds on the bar to study
in the midst of all the boat activities near the Coast Guard Station.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird and Lincoln's Sparrow at Robert Moses

2013-09-16 Thread Pat Palladino
In addition to the female Yellow-headed Blackbird feeding with Red-wings at the
hawk watch stand, there is a Lincoln's Sparrow along the boardwalk with a flick
of warblers and sparrows.

Certainly not as birdy as the reports from other sites suggested but there
were birds in the sites mentioned in the SUBJECT line. However, one had to
cover a lot of ground to get them. I wondered if the winds had anything to
do with what was observed since it was windy at both Fort Tilden and RIIS
park for most of the morning.

Birding with Isaac Grant for some time at Fort Tilden, RIIS Park and finally
along archery road at Floyd Bennett Field. Our overall warbler tally for the
day was 14 with ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER being the highlight in that group,
seen only by Isaac before I ran into him at Fort Tilden.

A second pass for Isaac and first for me near the golf course at RIIS Park
resulted in us finding a DICKCISSEL near the south west corner of the fence
line of the golf course. Earlier, we also had
LINCOLN SPARROW in a scrubby area at the beginning of the trail as you made
your west towards the Hawk Watch platform at Fort Tilden.

Later on at Floyd Bennett Field, in another scrubby area along Archery Road
we had very nice looks at a PHILADELPHIA VIREO.

While we did have multiples of warblers species, the numbers were nothing
like those we were picking up on the wire being reported from other city
parks where the birds appeared to be more concentrated. Our only significant
multiple worth mentioning is Common Yellowthroat with a conservative count of
110 when combining all three sites.

As far as hawk flights, we did have 3 American Kestrels, 1 Merlin and 1
Osprey at Fort Tilden and 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk at Floyd Bennett Field. Other
flight movements noted included good numbers of Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows,
Cedar Waxwings and a few Bobolinks, most seen at Fort Tilden.

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand
like a rock. - Thomas Jefferson

RE: [nysbirds-l] Tiana Bayside, Early Evening - No Elegant Tern

2013-07-10 Thread Pat Palladino
In furtherance of Eileen and Bob's notice of a possible Red-necked Stint at
Tiana, on Saturday evening, after an unsuccessful attempt at the Elegant Tern,
I left Tiana and headed to Triton Lane to check out the birds there. I decided
to stop back at Tiana on my way home and among the shorebirds, was what I
believed to be a Red-necked Stint. I had previously viewed the bird at
Cupsogue, and was pretty sure it was the Stint, however, it was about
8:30/8:45ish p.m. and it was just too dark to confirm. If it was the same bird,
then it was at Tiana on at least Saturday and Tuesday evenings. I left Tiana on
Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. for Cupsogue to get the Elegant Tern, but did not
see the Stint that early evening at Tiana. For those of you who may try for the
Stint at Tiana this evening, as a bonus, other birders have reported hearing
the calls of Northern Bobwhite in the brush surrounding the parking lot,
although, I have not been lucky enough to hear them.

[nysbirds-l] Black Tern and Arctic Tern at Nickerson Beach

2013-06-11 Thread Pat Palladino
Thanks to Brendan Fogarty for the tip. As of 7:00 p.m. a 1st year Arctic Tern
was seen at Nickerson Beach among a flock of Common Tern. The adult Black Tern
was also located at about 7:45 p.m. on the east side of the beach among a flock
of several hundred Common Terns. Two Roseate Terns were also present; however,
upon my arrival and meeting Brendan on the beach, I learned I was about 15
minutes too late to catch a Pomarine Jaeger.
