[nysbirds-l] Evening grosbeak

2022-11-09 Thread Spsdmd
At the Hook Mountain hawkwatch in nyack, in addition to a big late season hawk
migration, I had an evening grosbeak come in and land 20 feet in front of me.
Many photographs. Over 100 red shouldered hawks were counted today, in a big
year for red shouldered migration at most of the lower Hudson valley watches.

[nysbirds-l] hawk migration

2012-10-17 Thread Spsdmd

hook mountain had an excellent flight today. with almost dead calm conditions
nearly all day, there were 166 raptors counted, including over 100 sharpshins,
43 red shouldered hawks and an immature golden eagle. the golden was seen at
just before noon, circling up with an immature bald eagle for a nice comparison.

re:[nysbirds-l] banded kite

2012-06-12 Thread Spsdmd

having been to sterling forest to photograph the kites on at least 8 different
days so far (my office is only 15 min. away from the site), my guess is that
someone mistakenly saw the white leg feathers and orange leg skin color and
thought there were white/orange bands. these 2 birds are the same birds each
time i have been there. the female has some fairly distinctive white patches on
her back. their behavior in terms of where they perch and bring nesting
material is consistent each day. and having established this area as their
territory, i am sure they would not tolerate any other raptors around. twice i
have seen them chase out bald eagles that have drifted into the area. if
someone has photos of a banded female, then i stand corrected

[nysbirds-l] hawk migration

2011-03-02 Thread Spsdmd
i headed up to hook mt. in nyack this morning to open the spring hawk watch
season. even at this early date i had 4 red shoulders, 2 coopers hawks, 3
sharpshins and a harrier moving north from 9:30-12:15. in addition were the
usual local black and turkey vultures, red tails and peregrine, plus 3
ravens chasing each other around the entire time.
things should start picking up in the next couple of weeks, with the peak
numbers in mid April when the broadwings move through.
if you go the trail is still ice/snow in some spots.

its been a golden week for me so far. after seeing and photographing an adult
golden eagle on rt 6 in harriman st. park on sunday, i had an immature golden
flying high over rt 9w in tomkins cove as i was hoping to photograph some bald
eagles before i had to be at work this morning. its circled overhead for a
minute, then headed north and disappeared. i did get some photos that i will
have up on my website later tonight. www.stevesachsphotography.com

[nysbirds-l] golden eagle

2010-02-07 Thread Spsdmd
this morning at 945 i had an adult golden eagled perched(!) on rt 6 in
harriman state park just west of the traffic circle as you go towards central
valley. i was going east when i saw several crows mobbing the bird, and i
was able to pull over and photograph the bird for a couple of minutes. sadly
it flew off going away from me so i didn't get a good flight shot, but i
did not see any white in the tail leading me to believe that this was a
mature golden, possibly one of the birds seen this winter in the storm king mt
area? its golden nape was glowing in the morning sun.
i put 4 shots up on my website _www.stevesachsphotography.com_
(http://www.stevesachsphotography.com) under "NEW WINTER 2009-10"
while i'm here, i'll mention my photo exhibit that is up at the Teatown
nature center in Ossining -"Wintering birds of prey of the northeast". the
photos will be up for the month of February and i will be having a reception
there on sun feb. 28 from 3-5 so come by and check it out and say hello

[nysbirds-l] partial albino red tail

2009-11-15 Thread Spsdmd
this morning james velozzi found a partial albino red tailed hawk near the
intersection of rt 94 and county route 1 in orange county, between warwick
and pine island. it was mainly white with a few black primaries and
secondaries and a few red tail feathers. i was able to locate the bird and take

several pictures perched and flying. it also caught what i think was a vole
and carried it in its mouth at first and then in its talons. the pictures
are on my website-

[nysbirds-l] hook mt hawkwatch

2009-08-19 Thread Spsdmd
We opened the 2009 fall hawkwatch at Hook mountain in Nyack, NY today with
a handful of migrants. The first bird of the season was an osprey at about
8:20 this morning. Altogether we had 8 birds heading south:
2 osprey
1 northern harrier
3 sharp shins
1 adult bald eagle
1 immature broadwing
not bad considering the date and the ridiculously hot weather
