[nysbirds-l] Brown booby

2019-08-18 Thread Steven Sachs
Took the whale watch it of Riis landing/Breezy point this afternoon and just
before we started back at 4pm a brown booby came up behind the boat, came
around the front of the boat, and then landed on the railing at the front of
the boat within 2 feet of stunned passengers.
Not sure where we were in the water, but we were within sight of land and the
Verrazano bridge

[nysbirds-l] Mississippi kite

2019-05-29 Thread Steven Sachs
Technically I’m in New Jersey, but I just photographed a Mississippi kite at
the stateline lookout, between exits 2 and 3 on the palisades parkway north,
about 10 miles north of the George Washington bridge. It headed south from
here. May have been a young bird molting into adult because it looked kind of
ragged, but I will have to look at the pix on the computer later.

I am watching as they are filling in the puddles in the parking lot at orchard

important for local birds to get fresh water. There have been some rarities in

[nysbirds-l] Hawk migration

2013-04-10 Thread Steven Sachs
After getting very little done up at the hawk watch this spring, the birds
finally arrived today. First broadwing of the season came at 930, with a pretty
consistent flight til nearly 430. I was up to take pictures, not to count, and
I didn't bring binoculars, so I spent very little time scouring the sky.
Very conservative estimates, surely on the low side, were 60-70 Broadwings,
30+accipiters, 30+ kestrels, 15 osprey, 10 red shoulders, 2 peregrines, 2
harriers and maybe a red tail or 2 that moved through,
Pine warblers and bluebirds were the most common hawk food early in the day.
For photos, see my Facebook page

[nysbirds-l] Miss kites

2012-07-13 Thread Steven Sachs
It's been two weeks of irregular visits to sterling forest since I've seen
either of the Mississippi kites. Has anyone seen them? If not, any theories
about what happened ? Is the female finally in the nest they seemed to be
building, and the male out of sight? Or did they just up and leave?

[nysbirds-l] Miss kites

2012-06-26 Thread Steven Sachs
Spent my lunch hour at sterling forest. Both kites present in the general
vicinity. At one point the male caught a dragonfly and shared it with the
female, which i was able to photograph. Otherwise they spent most of the time
perched and preening. If you're on Facebook, check out my
