Re: [nysbirds-l] Point Lookout
I was at Point Lookout today and thought Sy Schiff's explanation was quite sufficient. Never heard the term groin refer to anything but a body part. I would like to add to Mr Schiff's report that I also saw circa a dozen Bonaparte Gulls. Thanks to the other pair of birders who pointed them out to me. I'm headed to the Hamptons again tomorrow for a 3 day weekend of partying. I will probably go birding on Dune Road and will report anything that's considered rare. Re: [nysbirds-l] Sands Point Preserve (Nassau) inc Lincoln's Sparrow
Northern Waterthrushes are apparently easy to find with night goggles. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End White Crowned Sparrows, warblers (today)
I've been here before sunrise and have seen lots of activity already. Lots of warblers including several Blackburnians, Black Throated Greens and Blues, Bay Breasted, and a Worm Eating. 2 White Crowned Sparrows at the turnaround. Also saw a warbler that I couldn't identify. It looked like a Black Throated Green but didn't have a black throat (at the Coast Guard hedgerow). I will try to relocate it and get a photo, Great day to be out birding! Re:[nysbirds-l] FYI Jones Beach closed (update)
I received some responses regarding how long the beaches would remain closed. I went back about an hour ago and they're open again. Crews have been bringing new sand to the beach- I didn't see any notable birds but did see some dolphins swimming along the shoreline. I saw 6 Nighthawks this evening over the Jane B. Francke Sanctuary in Brookville. Several female Redstarts were also present before it got dark. I highly recommend this preserve. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End (this morning)
Lots of Red Knots (76 exact count), Oystercatchers, Sanderlings, and a couple of Short Billed Dowitchers on the "Coast Guard" sand bar. The west end area was devoid of songbirds except for one spot that had a handful of Cape May Warblers, lots of female Redstarts and some Pewees. I also saw some Merlin and a Kestrel in the median.
