[nysbirds-l] American Avocet @ East Pond Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Queens Co.
There is an American Avocet currently on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay. The bird is on the west side, about a little more than 1/2 way up the pond. Also of note were singles of Stilt Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper and Piping Plover, the latter only my second ever on the pond. It should be noted that my observations were all from the East Side of the pond looking across to the west side as I make my way up from south to north. Other notable non shorebird sighting was a juvenile Black Tern at the south end reported by Sean Sime with Shane Blodgett. Full report later. [nysbirds-l] Caspian Tern @ East Pond Jamaica Bay Queens County...
I have not seen this posted as yet and I double checked my junk folder since many reports seem to keep ending up in that folder. I just picked up a voice message from Ann Lazarus, who indicated that she and her crew (love saying that) had a Caspian Tern at the raunt this morning around the same time I was trying to call her to give her a report from the north end after spotting them. The bird was observed from the Big John's Overlook. That is a very good bird for the East Pond and good to know that we have one around. In the past few seasons, I have had one hang around for a few days so keep an eye out if you are visiting. [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay East Pond update and Shorebird report 7-25
This afternoon just before high tide, I ventured forth onto the East Pond, first checking the north end. There are no flats on that end and water, is still above the ankles--in some areas much higher. It was tricky navigating but I made it up to Dead Man's Cove where I had 6 shorebirds. Over at the south end, flats have started to open up but there were no shorebirds around. At Big John's Pond, I had 2 Northern Waterthrushes and one Spotted Sandpiper. A careful scan from the overlook did not turn up any shorebirds that I might have missed--although I got to count the Mute Swan population, which holds steady at 122. In total I had a "whopping" 7 species of shorebirds. It was depressing but I am holding out hope that we have yet to see a big wave of migrating shorebirds. The species and numbers are as follows: 6 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 4 Least Sandpipers and about 15 Semipalmated Sandpipers. This time last year (26th to be precise), I was reporting 2100 Semipalmated Sandpipers. 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (\__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! [nysbirds-l] East Pond Update July 23rd
Dear all, As I indicated a few days ago, there is currently work being done on the north end of the East Pond. Although, I had a fairly good idea of what was being attempted. Yesterday evening, I had a conversation with NPS management in an effort to clarify what exactly was being done. Here is the scoop--NPS, has uncovered an area of the pipe that drains the pond. This section was found to have some collapsing occurring and so the SHORT TERM solution is to sleeve it with PVC piping. A long term solution will be to replace the entire pipe and put in place a more robust and updated system. This will require much more money than the short term solution so it will not happen overnight. However, it is on the radar to get done. As a result of the action taken to uncover the problematic section of the pipe and clearing the collapsed area and any blockage, water is now flowing at a considerable clip out of the pond. This, I verified early this morning as I visited the site and could see that the output will make a difference in the water level. This increased flow coupled with a dry spell means that we have a very good chance of salvaging the shorebird season on the pond. I'll keep posting updates as I check in and note the water level and movement of shorebirds. Again, thank you to all those who took the time to call in and or write to NPS, who themselves deserve credit for taking the necessary actions. Start brushing up on your shorebirds peeps, it's going to get real in a matter of weeks! I have not verified this as yet but I just got a text from a source in NPS, that the East Pond is draining quicker TODAY. Apparently, a "clog" was cleared. [nysbirds-l] Arctic Terns @ Cupsogue LI
Realizing that this weekend was the last window for spring Shorebird surveys. I birded Cupsogue LI working two tide cycles. Beginning on the falling tide, I stayed on the flats throughout the day into the rising afternoon tide. The highlights were two Arctic Terns, 1 adult and 1 first summer bird, 3 Roseate Terns, all adults and 1 Royal Tern that put in a late appearance. There was also a 1st summer Least Tern which is always nice to see. While I did not pick up any Black Terns, there were 8 Forster's Terns and over 200 Common Terns. The Common Tern flock had some variation in age including a couple of "Portlandica" types. It was fun to work through the birds there today with little to no disturbance. As far as shorebirds: today, there were more shorebirds than last week; however, the numbers remain small and nothing out of the ordinary was observed. An abbreviated sea watch early this morning was non productive. [nysbirds-l] Forest Park Cleanup
Reminder: we need volunteers for the Forest Park cleanup. So far the responses to participate have been few. The cleanup effort will occur on April 25th (no rain date). The tasks will include light pruning (clippers and pruning saws) and garbage removal. The project will focus mainly on the path from the 'Yellow Trail" to the Watehole; however, I expect we could expand where necessary. Parks will provide, gloves, bags and tools for the effort. Please contact me offline if you are interested in participating. [nysbirds-l] Caracara Including Parking
The bird which had flown off for a bit just returned to the same area reported earlier this AM. I just spoke with the owner, a delightful gentleman who is quite welcoming. He reiterated the need for parking in the proper location which is the lot near the club house or the adjoining grass on the left. Please do not park on the road on the way into the golf course. It clogs up the driveway and impedes his business, which is quite busy on Sunday. Two Northern Shrikes and two Ruffed Grouse were also along Prospect St. Searching through my email inbox, I do not think this bird was reported to the state listserv even though it is a state rarity and has been present for several weeks (reported 20 January 2010 by Donna Gooley) - even on the local listserv (http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NNYB.html), there were no updates on the hawk owl since 6 February. It might be helpful if local birders or visitors could continue to monitor and update on the presence/ absence of the owl - if not to help traveling birders, it is at the very least interesting and important to note the entire date range of such a rare bird's stay.
