[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Southern Zone Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2023-12-23 Thread Deborah Allen
Southern Zone, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
Saturday December 23, 2023
OBS: Robert DeCandido, PhD, Deborah Allen

This afternoon at 1:35pm Bob and I saw an Ash-throated Flycatcher perched above
the fence along the eastern edge of the landfill, where there's a big clump of
bittersweet. The footpath we were on runs parallel to the beach and the fence,
starting near a bridge. We only had the bird in view for a minute, but I did
manage to get a few photos.

I'm told it was seen by Richard Aracil at the landfill earlier in the week.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Manhattan NYC 12/2

2023-12-03 Thread Tom Fiore
Manhattan, N.Y. City -

The Ash-throated Flycatcher noted by A. Drogin in the west village area,
specifically near the Westbeth building, on Saturday, Dec. 2nd was also seen by
at least several others after the alerts were put out, thanks also to R.
Zucker. The flycatcher was also seen near West 12th and Greenwich St. and could
potentially still be in the general area, an interesting coincidence since this
was a section of that neighborhood with a bit of history for rare vagrant
flycatcher sightings of the past. The 12/2 bird is a presumed Ash-throated
with any other Myiarchus possibilities in this month in this region being much
less likely if not wholly unlikely.

Any further such rare flycatcher sightings ought to be posted to this list,
along with the local alerts and of course in eBird.

Good birding to all,

Tom Fiore

Just viewed it on the North Side of the median, just West of the paved back

Rob, was that really necessary adding the phoebe ID comment. He wasn't sure
when he took the photo, noted the differing color plumage & said so. It sure
got you & the others there. Go easy on less experienced birders than yourself!
You've seen years of various flycatchers.

Just confirmed the Ash-throated Flycatcher at the Dell Water. It was
flycatching on the side of the pond where there are 3 in hill mausoleums. It
then flew to the opposite side by the bee hives.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Manhattan 11/9

2020-11-10 Thread Adrian Burke
Several observers looking this morning for the Manhattan Ash-throated
Flycatcher have so far failed to find the bird. In addition to looking
around the soccer fields in Fort Washington Park where it was seen
yesterday, two of us walked south to West Harlem Piers Park at W 125th
Street searching along the way to no avail. It is worth noting that a
Myiarchus flycatcher was seen by Nate O’Reilly at the southwest corner of
the Inwood Hill Park ballfields a few days ago (about 35 blocks north of
the Fort Washington Park ballfields). If this was the same bird, it would
suggest quite a wide ranging individual, so anyone looking for it might
want to check points north and south along the Hudson River greenway.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Queens Co.

2019-12-08 Thread Andrew Baksh
An Ash-throated Flycatcher found by Lisa Scheppke continued today at
Michaelis-Bayswater Park in Queens.

Other highlights from the area included 2, perhaps as many as 3 Orange-crowned
Warblers, Purple Finch and an American Pipit.

The Ash-Throated Flycatcher appears to have a circuitous route that allows it
to disappear for long periods but with patience, it was seen several times
throughout the day.

Cheers,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher on Staten Island

2019-11-11 Thread Gus Keri
Is it possible the same one we saw last week at Shore Road Park?
We saw it in the section near Verrazano bridge, exactly across the water from
where it is being seen now.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher

2019-10-29 Thread Gus Keri
Hi everyone,
I just want to clear the misunderstanding about yesterday's Sighting of
Ash-throated Flycatcher in Shore Road Park of Brooklyn. The bird was neither
found nor ID'ed by myself.
It was spoted initially by another birder who pointed the bird to me (we were
birding together) and we both missed the ID.
We thought of few possibilities including Eastern or Western Kingbird and we
decided to go with Great-crested Flycatcher althought the bird looked slightly
and behaved differently. We didn't think of the possibility of Ash-Throated
Flycatcher which it would've been my second ever sighting of this species and
probably his life bird (I am not sure on that).
The credit of correct ID goes to two other birders who saw the photos and the
video I made and sent me emails, almost semultaniously, raising the possibility
of this species.

I don't mind getting the credit for getting good photos and videos of the bird
though. LOL

You can watch the video here:

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Heckscher SP, Suffolk Co.

2018-10-31 Thread Patricia Lindsay
An earlier attempt to post this seems not to have gotten through;
apologies for the repeat if it finally does.

Joan Quinlan found an Ash-throated Flycatcher here earlier today. Shai
Mitra was able to refind the bird around 4PM in the scrub between Field
6 and the defunct pool building. At a little after 5PM the bird flew
north into the inner marsh, but not far. Taylor Sturm was able to refind
it there, and saw it fly back to the area directly north of the pool
building, where Joan had found it originally.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Lido Beach Park West

2016-12-04 Thread John Mora

Flycatcher was still in the same western area mid afternoon.

This bird is very flighty and is often hidden. Seen twice flying off the park
inland to two pines beyond red storage hut adjacent to last large gravel
parking lot.

Northern oriole is still present as well as a flock of house finches and the
scattered red breasted nuthatches in the pines.

On the beach there were 10 dunlin mixed in with 25 sanderlings. Also seen was a
tight knit group of a dozen horned grebes performing synchronized swimming and
diving. Also present were a large number of red throated loons and fewer
common loons, often five birds in the glass. One adult cormorant flew West far
out likely double crested.

The bird was there today moving along the fence and going deeper in the
vegetation at times.  Even as far as the neighboring houses. Also, the gates to
the parking lot were closed today, so birders had to park in the nearby areas
and walk to the parking lot.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Glaucous Gull, late migrants, and a whale of a feeding frenzy

2016-11-13 Thread Tim Healy
I got a "late" start today, arriving at Jones Beach at around 9:20. Highlights
included continuing flocks of gannets on the move, a Fox Sparrow, and some
raptor activity. Hempstead Lake hosted a cooperative late Blue-headed Vireo,
which I closely examined to rule out the possibility of similar late species.
Bobby's report of Ash-throated Flycatcher lured me back into the field, and we
found the bird without much difficulty at Lido West Town Park. We also found a
Pine Warbler and some mentioned a nearby Black-throated Green. A chatter call
drew the attention of the assembled birders to a drab young oriole, which
appeared to simply be a Baltimore but photos will be reviewed just in case.
Brendan and I headed down the beach to scan some large gull flocks which were
visible to the east. Parking at Camp Anchor put us in a perfect spot to view
the loafing and feeding birds. Brendan quickly pulled out a first-year Glaucous
coming our way to land on the sand, and I spotted a Humpback Whale near the
horizon which we saw spouting several times as it traveled west. A nice day out
in nature!

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Lido West Town Park, Nassau Co.

2016-11-13 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Bobby Berlingeri just found this ATFL minutes ago (12:45 or so). He had a 45
second look before it disappeared and he is trying to relocate it now. He
describes the park as being just west of Nickerson Beach and east of the pink
Lido Hotel along Lido Blvd.

Good luck! We're hoping to find one here on Block Island.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher/Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Sean Sime
The previously reported Ash-throated Flycatcher was present and showing
well for a party of one from 2-3pm in the field west of Wolfe's Pond Park
along the Raritan Bay shoreline.
While I was there the bird worked back and forth on the beach side of the
rock break wall, often perching low and out of view. It actively fed and I
could hear it's bill "clapping" often. It was also "pipping" frequently.
Great find by Mike Shanley and many thanks to Isaac and others for status
updates and detailed directions.

I uploaded a few images to a Flickr gallery for anyone interested.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher yes on Staten Island

2016-11-02 Thread Isaac Grant
Continuing bird found late last evening by Michael Shanley. Bird has changed
locations a bit. Is now being seen at the entrance to Wolfes Pond. Go to end of
Holton Ana take oath through bushes. When it opens up go 50 feet left and then
look back towards where you parked. It's feeding in an open area before you get
to pond. Staying low for long periods as is typical. Also calling.

I don't believe this information was posted to the list serves, so I am passing
it on.

Michael Shanley reported on FB NY Birders that he found an Ash-throated
Flycatcher late this afternoon in a field at the foot of Holton Ave. on the
south shore of Staten Island (Richmond Co.). The location is adjacent to
Wolfe's Pond Park.
