[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose - Belmont Lake SP (Suffolk)
The Barnacle Goose was showing very nicely on Belmont Lake this morning. I arrived shortly after 7:00 AM and quickly located the bird on the open water toward the north end of the lake. It eventually climbed onto the ice and allowed for even better study as I watched the bird preen and let out some "barking" call notes. Sub flocks began exiting the lake at around 8:15 AM. The Barnacle lingered a bit longer and eventually took off heading toward the northwest. [nysbirds-l] BARNACLE GOOSE @ Belmont Lake SP (Suffolk Co.)
With the fading light, I decided to make a quick stop at Belmont Lake State Park in hopes to catch some geese setting up for their evening roost. There were close to a thousand Canada Geese roosting on the small amount of unfrozen water at the north end of the lake. Flocks were continuing to fly in from the north and at exactly 4:57 PM I watched a BARNACLE GOOSE fly in and join the flock. It was challenging to relocate the Barnacle within the densely packed flock of geese but managed to catch additional glimpses before losing light and calling it a night. This is presumably the same Barnacle Goose that's been showing up in this area on an annual basis. Hopefully the goose continues to roost on Belmont when the ice finally recedes. The north islands can easily block viewing of a large portion of the flock. This flock has historically grazed on the grounds of the St. Charles Cemetery but I haven't noted a single goose there yet this season. [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose ++, Belmont Lake S.P. (Suffolk)
A nice array of geese were seen on Belmont Lake this morning. I first arrived at 8:00 AM and quickly picked out 2 CACKLING GEESE, both separate from one another. At about 8:10, I watched 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE fly in from the west and land in the center of the lake. One of the two birds was a juvenile (partially developed "front") and the other an adult. Perhaps the juvenile found the lingering adult that has been seen in the area. I also feel there's a chance that these are 2 new birds, as Chase only noted 1 adult bird yesterday evening. There are many geese in this vicinity. The white-fronteds only stayed on the lake for about 10 minutes before flying off. Finally, the BARNACLE GOOSE drifted out from behind the north islands and remained on site when I left the park at 8:30.
