[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese - Hendrickson Park, Valley Stream, Nassau County

2019-11-10 Thread Timothy Healy
A loop around the lake at Hendrickson Park revealed two different Cackling
Geese among the wintering flocks of Canadas. One is a recognizable, returning
individual, back for (at least) its fourth consecutive winter alongside a small
Canada Goose that it is always closely associated with. Perhaps they are a
mated pair contributing hybrids to the wild mix of variation in this species
complex. Notes on the specific field marks for both Cacklers are included with
my eBird checklist, for anyone who wants a more detailed search image to follow
up.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese Van Cortlandt Park Bronx Co.

2019-01-18 Thread Andrew Baksh
Earlier today, I found two Cackling Geese among the 989 White-cheeked Geese
(Branta Canadensis) flock that had gathered on the Parade Grounds at Van
Cortlandt Park.

There were several small non Cackling candidates among the flock so exercise
caution when sorting through the Branta Canadensis if you do go.

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese - Lake Ronkonkoma and surrounds, Suffolk County, LI

2017-12-28 Thread David La Magna
Hi all,
Mike Rath and I discovered a number of Cackling Geese yesterday during the
Smithtown CBC. With birds moving around during the day we figured there to
be at least 4 individuals, three of which were well photographed.

The most interesting one displayed a nice white neck collar and with a
really small bill which could possibly be a minima subspecies. This
individual was first detected on Lake Ronkonkoma in the morning and again
later in the day feeding at Sachem High School North fields (assuming it is
the same individual).

Two other individuals were well documented at Great Hollow Middle School in
Nesconset. One being a very "frosty" individual.

https://flic.kr/p/EPRM2N
https://flic.kr/p/21SQRyy

I apologize for the late posting, hopefully the birds are still around. I
would be interested in subspecies discussion.

Two Cackling Geese are still present in Prospect Park on the lake. They are
located in a small cove just on the south side of the three sisters island.
That is across the road from a landmark called the peristyle which is near the
parade grounds.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese, Hendrickson Park, Valley Stream

2017-11-11 Thread Timothy Healy
Yesterday’s Cackler continues at the handball courts, and I located another
individual on the lakeshore nearby. This second bird is even smaller and more
striking, with a tiny bill and a very blocky head. At a glance, the goose
strongly resembled the one that stayed through last winter, most based on
overall proportions and plumage details like the cheek patch shape and the
white collar. There was also a dark-cheeked, small Canada in the same subflock
also looked quite familiar in comparison to an associate of the ‘16-‘17
visitor. I’ll have to review my photos, but it definitely caught my attention.

A pair of Wood Ducks are also present on the lake.

Cheers!

were observed feeding near the golf course, which is north east from where the

Also noted were the continuing 3 Pine Warblers. As noted in previous posts
these birds are mostly seen in the vicinity of the "Garden of Meditation."

RE: [nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese - Queens

2015-12-06 Thread Steve Walter
I've posted pictures at my web site http://stevewalternature.com . I haven't
studied the Cackling Goose complex to the extent that others have, but to me
these appear to be different subspecies. One is clearly larger and longer
necked - even longer necked than most of the surrounding canadensis type
Canadas. I think it would be a Richardson's. At a distance or without a
good look at the bill, it could be almost impossible to pick out. The
smaller one, detectable at a distance, will guide you to both. While in
photo range, the larger one slept with head tucked in. I only got a couple
of pictures of it, as the two swimming away together. The smaller one was
much more cooperative and I posted a close up. A pale ring on its neck is
clearly visible.

Thanks Corey, for finding them and alerting me. Sadly, I had looked at the
flock of geese before he did, and whiffed. I knew I should have given Corey
a few minutes before I hit the road. I had to go back later. Hey, you know
me - I'm not that good a birder. And yet, Corey wants me to do his Christmas
Count.

Between Flushing Meadows visits, I went to Jamaica Bay. The 2 Long-billed
Dowtichers are still there, visible by scope across the pond from the
overlook past Big John's Pond. At least 2 Blue-winged Teal are still there -
at the south end. At least 8 Redheads, looking north from the overlook, but
I whiffed on red-headed wigeons. No sign of the pelicans while I was there
today, but I did previously see that they occasionally fly out to the bay.
I'm still flabbergasted by the numbers of American Coots. Was I at STA-5?
Good luck counting them, Eric.

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese, Red-necked Grebes - Somerset (Niagara Co.) and Yates (Orleans Co.)

2015-03-16 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
I checked out the northeastern and northwestern corners of Niagara and
Orleans Counties, respectively, today. Most surprising were the number of
RED-NECKED GREBES - 12 at Olcott, 88 at Barker Bicentennial Park, and 25 at
Shadigee. I see that David Pryor had a count of 32 in Toronto on March 8th
so I suspect that a number of the birds I saw arrived around that time - a
week ago. I saw my first CACKLING GEESE for this area this year - 3 at the
north end of Hartland Rd, 1 off of Barker Bicentennial Park, and 6 on
Niagara-Orleans Countyline Rd. The hawks weren't flying with the overcast
and light wind, just a few Turkey Vultures. As always, it was nice to see
the newly arrived ducks in the wet fields - NORTHERN SHOVELER, WOOD DUCKS,
AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN PINTAILS, and REDHEADS are what I had. Just 5
TUNDRA SWANS - Countyline Rd and Hartland Rd. I only had about 10,000 CANADA
GEESE so many more should be arriving shortly. The biggest concentrations
were along Countyline Rd and at a few spots on Lake Ontario.

Enjoy the spring!

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese @ VCP Bronx NY

2014-11-30 Thread Andrew Baksh
After trying for and missing the geese flock at Van Cortlandt Park (VCP)
yesterday, I returned today and spent several hours studying the flock of 1,897
Canada Geese on the Parade Grounds.

>From the flock, I picked out a total of 6 CACKLING GEESE, all well documented
>with photographs and video. This beats my previous VCP CACG (Cackling Goose)
>high count of 3 in 2013. Some of the Cackling Geese were observed with Dale
>Dancis who joined me for a bit and provided valuable assistance in keeping the
>flock from getting spooked by park visitors. No easy feat!

The Cackling were observed feeding and loafing in 2 pairs with the other two by
themselves though not very far off. In addition, there were 6 Canada Geese
with neck bands (RY62, RY89, RY93, RY96, RY97 and NF08) along with federal
metal bands and one also had a green band # 53 on the right leg.

Over the past few seasons studying and noting the banded Geese in the flock has
helped me to track their movements and so listing them here would help
observers if they are seen in places like Inwood Hill Park. Please report to me
offline, if these numbers are seen elsewhere other than Van Cortlandt Park.

If you are interested in trying for the Cackling Geese, I would suggest either
a week day or early Sunday morning. Saturday, is always problematic with the
ongoing track and field events and the geese tend to disperse from the lake
onto the golf course or other nearby areas to feed, if the Parade Grounds are
not available to them.

I would also caution would be Geese Gagglers on the presence of several lesser
Canada types in this flock, some with very small looking bills. Be also on the
lookout for Great White-fronted and Barnacle Goose both of which have been
reported from the grounds in the past.

Other notable birds on the Parade Grounds today included 1 American Pipit and 1
Snow Bunting. I did not hear or saw any Horned Larks today but did have 10
yesterday while birding the are with Bronx Brendan. At some point, I will have
photos up on my blog with some of today's fine looking Geese.

Cheers,

Andrew Baksh

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese-Smithtown (Suffolk Co.)

2012-12-23 Thread Brent Bomkamp
Two Cackling Geese were present on Miller's Pond in Smithtown from 8:00 to
9:00 this morning. The individual variation of the species was obvious,
with one bird noticeably smaller and darker than the other. Neither showed
any obvious neck-ring. They proceeded to land on the athletic field across
the street. An Ebird checklist with photos can be found here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12352979

At nearby Blydenburg County Park I had three flyover Common Redpolls and
counted 213 Ring-necked Ducks on Stump Pond.
