[nysbirds-l] Goose hunting season - Sept 1st

2022-08-30 Thread Richard Guthrie
This DEC announcement should bring attention to birders in the field,
especially around waterfowl areas:
Sept. 1: Canada Goose Hunting Seasons Open

The September Canada goose season occurs in all goose hunting zones except
the Western Long Island zone. All upstate areas are open from Sept. 1
through 25. Canada goose seasons in the Central and Eastern Long Island
zones begin on Sept. 6 and run through Sept. 30. In the Western Long Island
zone, the season opens Oct. 8. The September season includes liberal bag
limits (eight to 15 birds per day depending on zone), extended shooting
hours, and other special regulations to maximize hunter success. Additional
details on waterfowl hunting regulations, season dates, hunting area
boundaries, and bag limits can be found on DEC's website.

[nysbirds-l] Goose "hunting"

2015-01-06 Thread robert adamo
Hoping to catch up with some of the recent "specials" seen in the Riverhead
area, I spent ~ 3 hours touring the sod farms, and other agricultural
fields. I did find 2 moderately sized Canada flocks, with only 1 Snow Goose
to show for it...but I'm not complaining...with it being my FOS, which
speaks volumes as to how little I've been in the field lately. Since the
day was overcast/snowing, and thinking a Short-eared Owl might be hungry
and confused, I headed for the Calverton Grasslands. Over Hulse Landing Rd.
in Wading River, a flock of ~ 50 (mostly) Horn Larks were getting their
exercise, but never landed. The grasslands were quiet, with ~ 6 Savannah
Sparrows and 1 N.Harrier (a Gray Ghost). If there was a Short-eared on the
property mid-morning, it wasn't confused !

Cheers,
Bob

Is there any record of the number of the above that are taken each year.
Are they taken for sport or for food? Does not seem like there would be
much meat on the bones. Also seem like it would really be a tough hunt.

[nysbirds-l] Goose hunting season to open Sept. 1st

2012-08-31 Thread Richard Guthrie
Apologies in advance for the cross-posting, but there are some who subscribe
to just one or two lists.

Here's a heads-up: The early Canada Goose hunting season opens for most of
New York State tomorrow, Sept. 1st. The season for most of Long Island and
Lake Champlain starts Sept. 4th. The early season runs through Sept. 24th or
25, depending on the region.

In addition, Snipe, Rails and Gallinule season opens Sept. 1st except on
Long Island where there is no open season on these birds.

For details check the NYS DEC information page at:
http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/wfregsguide12.pdf

There you will find out the permitted license requirements, hunting hours,
bag limits, and other details.
