[nysbirds-l] MNSA, Oceanside, Red-necked Grebe

2020-01-28 Thread Sy Schiff
Overcast, raw morning. Out in the channel, there was an interesting mix this
morning. COMMON LOON, RED-THROATED LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE, COMMON GOLDENEYE and
GREATER SCAUP. On the marsh, a BELTED KINGFISHER and GREAT BLUE HERON. A bit
of sun when I left.

[nysbirds-l] MNSA, Oceanside Preserve.

2013-10-15 Thread syschiff
Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 15 Oct

A loud screeching Ca, Ca, Ca Ca caught my attention. As I turned toward the
sound, a CLAPPER RAIL had burst out of the marsh, flew about 10 yards, calling
all the time, and dove back in. This was followed by some GREATER YELLOWLEGS
calling and flying by in the distance. Earlier, other Yellowlegs had been
scattered about with only a pair of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER as added shorebirds.

An OSPREY is still hanging around and the BELTED KINGFISHER continues. A PALM
WARBLER was on the path. Sparrows around the pond included:-SAVANNAH, SONG and
SWAMP. A SALTMARSH SPARROW flew out from beneath the boardwalk and landed
further into the marsh.

The Seaside Goldenrod on site is just past its peak, but Fall color is not
there yet. Otherwise a beautiful fall day.

[nysbirds-l] MNSA, Oceanside and Baldwin Park

2012-03-20 Thread Sy Schiff
20 March

Stopped by MNSA, Oceanside after the fog began to lift. A calling CLAPPER RAIL
came out into a ditch and gave us a show.

Baldwin Park has several lighted Baseball fields. One light bank by the soccer
parking lot has an OSPREY nest on top with resident tenant on it and a second
light bank out in left field holds a MONK PARAKEET nest. One bird came out and
posed for pictures.

[nysbirds-l] MNSA, Oceanside -2nd yr Magnificent Frigatebird

2010-10-26 Thread Michael Farina
While on the Marine Nature Study Area's Hawkwatch during the 4-5hr a 2nd
year (Sibley) Magnificent Frigatebird was seen at 4:15p flying west to
east towards Jones Inlet. The winds at our location were SW to S all
day. The bird flew over our location with its characteristic black
narrow wings, and tail with its pure white breast and head. The bird
soared through with a few flaps, straight and non-stop, visible for less
then 2 minutes before losing it in the low cloud cover.
