[nysbirds-l] Manhattan - Summer Shorebirds

2014-07-26 Thread Ben Cacace
During yesterday's low tide four Spotted Sandpipers were on the mudflats of
Sherman Creek at Swindler Cove Park. The official website for the park at
NYRP appears to be renaming the site from Swindler Cove Park to Sherman
Creek Park.

These Spotted's are the first shorebirds on Manhattan for the current
summer reported to eBird.org.

The path along Sherman Creek that leads to Swindler Cove Park is open and
close to completion. There's an entrance about halfway down the path from
the parking lot for P.S. 5.

Access to the mudflats on the creek are not as open as they were before.
The alley where they use to do the composting is still accessible but the
portion closest to the flats are overgrown and one of the workers pointed
out Poison Ivy in the area. The overlook along the path where the
stonehenge benches are is equally overgrown. The west edge of the flats
offers the best viewing location but no path exists to get down to them.
Walking along the fence near the benches off 10th Ave. leading to the flats
is the best bet for now.

I've visited North Cove, Inwood which is just off 9th Ave. There are
mudflats here that might be productive. Here's the view of the entrance on
Google Maps:

A shared location on eBIrd exists for both locations: 'North Cove, Inwood'
and 'Swindler Cove Park and Sherman Creek'.
