Re: [nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Floyd Bennett Field

2012-03-08 Thread Terence Clarke
Today around 8:30am Guy Tudor and I watched the Northern Shrike for
about 10 minutes near the same area where Martin Carney saw the bird on
the 2nd (last Friday). The bird was perched in a tall tree
(Cottonwood?). At one point it swooped down to the center of the
airstrip where it pried a centipede from a seam in the concrete, it then
flew back to it's original perch and devoured the bug.
Best,
Terry Clarke

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Floyd Bennett Field

2012-03-03 Thread Martin Carney
My directions to the Northern Shrike were not clear enough yesterday because
you have to cross 2 runways. I saw the bird on the eastern side of the main
north-south runway, approximately 300 yards south of the Model Plane stand.
The bird was on top of a tall tree in the brushy area, maybe 30 yards off the
runway. It was there for about 10 seconds before it swooped down, and I lost
it.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Floyd Bennett Field

2012-03-02 Thread Martin Carney
I saw the Northern Shrike today at approximately 4:10 p.m. at Floyd Bennett
Field. The bird was located approximately 300 yards south of the Model
Airplane stand, across the runway from the stand, in a tall tree in the brush
area.
