[nysbirds-l] Snow Buntings
Hi, If anyone happens to see snow buntings today near Jones Beach and Point Lookout can you let me know because we are getting ready to head back to DC and I dipped on them yesterday. May try one more time on the way out of town! Thanks! [nysbirds-l] snow buntings....Iceland gull
the horned lark flock, reported yesterday, was found this morning at 11 in Mattituck in the sod field on the southeast corner of Oregon Road and Depot Road. There were many snow buntings in the flock but the lapland longspurs could not be found. Be advised viewing conditions were difficult due to the strong NW winds. an Iceland gull was found in the parking lot at Iron Pier beach in Riverhead at 1:30. gull was still there when I left. [nysbirds-l] Snow Buntings (+++) Coxsackie; +
I came across an enormous flock of SNOW BUNTINGS on River Road (Co. Rt 61) just north of the Village of Coxsackie, Greene County. Getting a number on the size of this swarm was difficult because they were so flighty. But I'd put a conservative estimate at around 600. They just kept flowing onto the road surface and shoulders until the next vehicle went by. Then they'd flow out as a black and white ribbon cloud rising and dipping across the fields. There were a few HORNED LARKS mixed in, but no Lapland Longspurs that I could pick out. There were, however, several LAPLAND LONGSPURS on Flint Mine Road again today (behind the prison). The very dark SAVANNAH SPARROWS were there as well. Doing a little research on that species leaves me to believe these birds might be from the north-eastern Canada population - or from the Hudson Bay/Manitoba populations, known respectively as "Labrador" Savannah Sparrow and "Churchill" Savannah Sparrow. I'll post a representative photo of them on the HM Birds Yahoo site. Please understand that the pictures were taken against a strong backlit snowy setting and through a car windshield. I'll also put up a photo of a "typical" Savannah Sparrow taken at the nearby Coxsackie Grasslands during the nesting season. [nysbirds-l] Snow Buntings at Sammy's Beach, East Hampton
Also had some SNOW BUNTINGS today - 2 at Sammy's Beach. Otherwise, waterfowl numbers building up - had 3 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Pied-billed Grebes and 5 American Coot at Ice House Pond in Montauk and a couple of Green-winged Teal at Teddy Roosevely County Park. White-winged Scoter are building up on the Bay-side in East Hampton and I saw a lot more Surf Scoters closer to Montauk, plus a few Great Cormorants. On the lingering end of the spectrum, had a Palm Warbler at Deep Hollow Ranch and 20+ Forster's Terns at Montauk Inlet. Sparrow numbers are markedly higher than last week in most places, but despite investing some time in locations like East Lake Drive, I wasn't able to come up with more than a scattering of Chipping Sparrows in among the hundreds of Junco's, White-throated and Song Sparrows. Yesterday we had 2 ROYAL TERNS and 2 RED-THROATED LOONS in Napeague Harbor (from the Walking Dunes side). An interesting contrast as the seasons change. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
