2016-11-25 Thread Tom Fiore
Friday, 25 November, 2016 - City Hall Park, lower Manhattan, New York CityA Western Tanager continues at this park this morning, but has been a bit more active and mobile within the park - moving to the south portion of the park - and a BIG thank you to Paul Bourdain for coming up to let some of us know this, word-of-mouth still works well -The tanager was also returning to its oft-seen area of Thursday, in the eastern parts of the main east-west path that crosses the park (the Brooklyn Bridge will be directly in front of one, if facing east here at the park's east border - trees just inside seem attractive for the tanager - and there as well as in shrubs beneath, the same warblers (Black-throated Blues both male -&- female plumaged, Ovenbird[s] Common Yellowthroat[s], & in the more southern portion of the park, a Yellow-breasted Chat, which was rather mobile at times as was the tanager - also continuing at City Hall Park are "Red" Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, & a good variety of other migrants or winter-visitant speciesCity Hall Park is located south of Chambers Street, lower Manhattan - to the east of Broadway - it is also at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, & a few yards from the main pedestrian path to that bridge. The area the Tanager seems to be favoring is between the 2 major buildings IN the park, on / near an east-west path, be looking-up and listen for the distinctive call.s from the tanager. It was present in this small park all day on Thursday.Other interesting birds may be in the general area - and the 23-days-now? - "other" Yellow-breasted Chat IS also still present in Trinity Church's cemetery, north portion as of 9+ am today - it is not the same bird as that in City Hall Park, even though Trinity Church is just a few short blocks down Broadway, on the western side of that major thoroughfare. Hot off the Staten Island Naturalist group's list - TODAY, Friday 11/25 - Western Tanager (male) has been seen again there, southern-most point of Staten Island (NYC) which is also the southern-most point in NY state (Ward's Point). - - -"Dr. Richard Veit had the tanager this morning around 7:45am in the field at Wards Point. [A] few of us are out looking."__Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, 11/24 -Great props to the Staten Islander birders Dave Eib and Seth Wollney, who on Thursday 11/24 found a beauty of a male of this species of tanager at Conference House Park in the south-most part of that county, southmost part of NYC and of NY state - that area is accessible, incidentally, by NYC Transit, including the Staten Island Rail (train) which is on the NYC Metro-Card system and is timed to meet & depart with Staten Island ferry crossings from & to Manhattan (from St. George ferry terminal, one would take the train - there is just one route & line - to its final stop at Tottenville, which ride will take nearly 1 hour, & then there is a modest walk east to reach the edge of Conference House Park, a further walk east to the are within Conference House Park, on a path. Thanks also to Andrew Baksh for getting out word of this find to the NYS list asap. Messages (from Staten Island Naturalist group)_1.
