[nysbirds-l] Whimbrels at Cedar Beach, Southold

2012-08-11 Thread WILLIAM SINGER
Yesterday Derek Rogers posted his sightings of at least six Whimbrels at Cedar Beach County Park, Southold.   This post caught my attention, as my wife and I also saw a group of least six Whimbrels at the same place last April,  behaving as Rogers described.  It seems Cedar Beach is a stopping-off point for migrating Whimbrels, in both directions.  Maybe they were even the same individuals.Bill SingerEast Marion, NY

[nysbirds-l] WHIMBRELS - Cedar Beach C.P., Southold, NY (Suffolk)

2012-08-09 Thread Derek Rogers
I decided to have lunch at Cedar Beach County Park today and I'm glad I did. At
least 6 WHIMBRELS were feeding during low tide on the inside flats as well as
along the edges of the marsh. The birds were evenly spread out within the
complex. Some of the birds were often concealed behind patches of Spartina
alterniflora but would sporadically come into view. There was one individual
that put on a nice, close-viewing show. As I mentioned, I counted a definitive
6 during one of my last scope sweeps. The birds were mobile, flying from one
foraging area to the next. Given the movement and hidden viewing conditions, I
wouldn't have been very surprised if there were a couple more out there. Time
constraints forced me to move on before I could confirm my suspicions of more
than 6 individuals.

 Best,

[nysbirds-l] Whimbrels at Mecox

2011-07-23 Thread Anthony Collerton
Early this morning Michael Duffy and I checked out the flats at Mecox. Lots of
common shorebirds but the highlight being a flock of 14 WHIMBREL that flew in
while we were there.

Later we checked out Napeague and braved the Mosquitos long enough to get a
single GRASSHOPPER SPARROW in the swale beyond Walking Dunes.

Philip Dempsey and Ryan Walker skipped birding and surfed at Montauk in the
morning, besting us with a sighting of a beached SPERM WHALE.

[nysbirds-l] Whimbrels in Brooklyn

2009-09-07 Thread Rob Jett
I just received a text message from Peter Dorosh. Apparently, the two
Whimbrels that spent last week at Dreier-Offerman Park didn't go very
far. They are now hanging around on the Six Diamond baseball fields
next to Home Deport. Those are the fields just on the south side of
Dreier-Offerman Park (between the park and Home Depot).
