[nysbirds-l] Whimbrels at Cedar Beach, Southold
Yesterday Derek Rogers posted his sightings of at least six Whimbrels at Cedar Beach County Park, Southold. This post caught my attention, as my wife and I also saw a group of least six Whimbrels at the same place last April, behaving as Rogers described. It seems Cedar Beach is a stopping-off point for migrating Whimbrels, in both directions. Maybe they were even the same individuals.Bill SingerEast Marion, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

[nysbirds-l] WHIMBRELS - Cedar Beach C.P., Southold, NY (Suffolk)
I decided to have lunch at Cedar Beach County Park today and I'm glad I did. At least 6 WHIMBRELS were feeding during low tide on the inside flats as well as along the edges of the marsh. The birds were evenly spread out within the complex. Some of the birds were often concealed behind patches of Spartina alterniflora but would sporadically come into view. There was one individual that put on a nice, close-viewing show. As I mentioned, I counted a definitive 6 during one of my last scope sweeps. The birds were mobile, flying from one foraging area to the next. Given the movement and hidden viewing conditions, I wouldn't have been very surprised if there were a couple more out there. Time constraints forced me to move on before I could confirm my suspicions of more than 6 individuals. [nysbirds-l] Whimbrels at Mecox
Early this morning Michael Duffy and I checked out the flats at Mecox. Lots of common shorebirds but the highlight being a flock of 14 WHIMBREL that flew in while we were there. Later we checked out Napeague and braved the Mosquitos long enough to get a single GRASSHOPPER SPARROW in the swale beyond Walking Dunes. Philip Dempsey and Ryan Walker skipped birding and surfed at Montauk in the morning, besting us with a sighting of a beached SPERM WHALE.
