[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover directions (Suffolk)

2019-05-15 Thread Douglas Futuyma
Here is a more detailed description of the location of the Wilson's Plover,
at Cupsogue Beach County Park, than in my previous posting (which I hope
went out). The fastest way to where I saw the bird late this afternoon
would be to walk west on the 4-wheel drive road from the parking lot. One
on that road, you will pass several official footpaths from the road
through the dunes to the beach ("Designated Dune Access Points"), bordered
by orange-flagged string. Go to the fifth open path (ignoring one that is
closed), just before an open metal gate. When I saw the Plover, it was
immediately west of that path as it opens onto the beach. For the first 15
minutes or so, it was on the dune, in the "virtually fenced" Piping Plover
reserve; it then made its way to the water's edge, where it succeeded at
least in catching a wave-tossed gastropod that it carried up into the
dune. The walk from that site back along the road to the parking lot took
about 10 minutes (less than the walk westward on the beach into the wind,
searching for the bird).

I would have provided more information while in the field, but my phone's
battery charge was dangerously low.

Here's hoping it stays into tomorrow,
Doug Futuyma

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover - Cupsogue County Park Suffolk Co.

2019-05-15 Thread Sean Camillieri
Hi!

I've received a photo of a Wilson's Plover from a Piping Plover technician
out at Cupsogue County Park. Location of the bird was a half mile east of
these coordinates: 40.767498,-72.7436

Other location specifics I received was "if you park in the lot and walk
out onto the beach it was in the symbolic PIPL fencing." That's all I know.
The report with photo will be posted on ebird later tonight.

Bill Hanley reports a Wilson's Plover currently at the Jones Beach dune ponds

lot or the SW corner of the TR Center parking lot, following unofficial trails

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover -- West End Jones Beach

2017-06-12 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Just wanted to get a quick word out that my mom and I just had a Wilson's
Plover flyover us at the swale at West End. It was a quick view but it
appeared to be a female based on the paler brown and narrow breast band. We
have been unable to relocate. It flew west towards the ocean.

Also present in the swale were 2 Black-necked Stilts and 4 White-rumped
Sandpipers.

Good luck if you try for it!

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover BACK at Cupsogue!

2014-05-06 Thread Justin LeClaire
Hey everyone,

My crew and I just refound the Wilson's Plover at Cupsogue Beach County Park.
It's quite far out on the flood shoals in the bay. Currently, it's sitting
amongst a bunch of mussels on the far NE side of the main large flood shoal out
in the bay. Nearly all of the hundreds of sanderling/Dunlin took off toward the
back side of the island, however this guy has stayed in the same area for the
better part of an hour in the area described.

Best viewing may be from the end of the sandy path that runs from behind a red
fence that runs along the dirt road and continues down to the bay. You could
also try from the camping area along the dirt road in the park, as it's
somewhat of an elevated area. We were on the flood shoal for a PIPL/other
shorebird survey when we found the WIPL, and I do have some pictures.

The tide is quite low with a ton of mudflats showing currently. Luckily, I was
able to put a friendly gentleman named Byron on the bird while he was
conducting a shorebird survey for the Audubon Society

Good luck! (At least he's still out here).

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover & Golden Plover - No, but 2 consolation prizes instead !

2014-04-29 Thread robert adamo
On Tuesday, between 2:30 and ~ 6:00 PM, I looked for the previously
reported species, from Cupsogue Co. Pk. to Shinnicock Inlet, without
success. I was rewarded for my efforts by finding FOS Boat-tailed
Grackles (2) in the marsh along Dune Rd, w/o the Ponquogue Bridge. At the
inlet I picked up an immature Iceland Gull, which looked like one of the
individuals that favored this location during this past winter. There was
also a raff of scooters just inside the mouth of the inlet, but due to the
high winds and rough wave action, I was unable to get a real accurate count
(estimated ~ 230 birds)and the only specie I was sure of, was Surf Scooter,
of which there were many.

Cheers,
Bob

Re:[nysbirds-l] WILSON'S PLOVER, Cupsogue Beach County Park, Westhampton Beach

2014-04-29 Thread J GLUTH
The Wilson's Plover is a great find. But I'm even more intrigued by the
American Golden Plovers also mentioned as an aside. American Golden
Plover is an uncommon migrant in spring on Long Island, and it seems
fairly early as well. As there have been ~20 EUROPEAN Golden Plovers
reported up in Newfoundland within the past week I think anyone chasing
the Wilson's should also make a concerted effort to to find, carefully
study, and photograph any pluvialis plovers found.

[nysbirds-l] WILSON'S PLOVER, Cupsogue Beach County Park, Westhampton Beach

2014-04-29 Thread Justin LeClaire
Hello all!

I'm working on Fire Island this spring/summer as a Piping Plover field
technician and at 1130 today, found a male WILSON'S PLOVER at Cupsogue beach
county park. An iPhone-scoped shot can be seen here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/85270080@N05/14042030866/

Directions- from the giant parking lot, walk or drive west down the dirt road
(truck recommended if driving) to the metal gate halfway down the park. Walk a
little past the gate until the grassy dunes dissipate to sand and are much
shorter, take a right here at the roped path to the bay side. The bird was
right in the vicinity of this path in the bay-beach area.

Additionally, we had at least one American Golden-Plover (possibly two) here
two days ago in the park.

PLEASE be careful to not disturb the Piping Plovers in the vicinity, and
remember to stay in designated walking areas!

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover Still Present at Jones Beach West End

2010-05-15 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Steve Schellenger re-found Andrew Baksh's Wilson's Plover at Jones Beach West
End this evening. The bird was in the swale (much drier now) on the beach side
of the Field 2 pavilion and was seen by Tom Burke and several other birders in
the day's waning light.

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover @Jones Beach West End...

2010-05-08 Thread birdingdude
I found a Wilson's Plover this afternoon on the spit at the Coast Guard
Station. Subsequently, the bird took off with the flock of Semipalmated
Plovers it was in company with. Luckily, I was able to relocate it in front of
the concession stand by the swale. I'll have digiscopings shots posted on my
blog later. Good luck if ypu go.
Good and responsible birding!
